BALANCE BEAMS IN LAS VIRGENES WIN
‘STAR’ SIGHTING IN SANTA MARIA
After beginning her career on the grass, the metamorphosis of Balance (Thunder Gulch) into a top main-track
filly is complete. Under a patient Victor Espinoza ride,
the handsome bay put herself
squarely in contention as the nation’s top sophomore filly with a
determined score over the returning
Wild Fit (Wild Wonder) in the GI Las
Virgenes S. at Santa Anita yesterday. Owned by the Amerman Racing stable, Balance came close to
Grade I glory in her latest, running
second by half a length to Diplomat
Lady (Forestry) in the GI Hollywood
Starlet Dec. 18, and avenged that
Balance and Espinoza
loss here. “I think the last time I
Benoit photo
took too much hold, and when I
tried to go she resented it,” said Espinoza. “But today
she was perfect. She broke nice and relaxed, and I did
what I wanted.” Las Virgenes Coverage cont. p2
Veteran Star Parade (Arg) (Parade Marshal) was faced
with a tough foe in the newly turned four-year-old
Proposed (Benchmark), but
showed the youngster a thing or
two with a rousing tally in yesterday’s GI Santa Maria H. at Santa
Anita. In doing so, the sevenyear-old became just the second
two-time winner in the 72-year
history of the race, having also

won in 2004. Video, sponsored

ROCKPORT HARBOR VICTORIOUS IN RETURN
On the sidelines since last April, Fox Hill Farm’s
Rockport Harbor (Unbridled’s Song)
turned in an ultra-game effort to
prevail in yesterday’s GIII Essex H.

this one over with,” said winning
trainer John Servis. “I guess they
just let him go, figuring he’d come

LA CANADA, SAN VICENTE AT SANTA ANITA
Santa Anita plays host to both of the country’s
graded stakes this afternoon. In contrast to the East
Coast, where a severe winter
storm forced New York’s Aqueduct to cancel Sunday, the forecast is for mostly sunny skies as
sophomore colts line up in the
GII San Vicente S. and four-yearold fillies contest the GII La Canada S. Trainer Bob Baffert seems
Pussycat Doll

to hold all the aces. Impressive
San Miguel S. winner Too Much Bling (Rubiano) will
likely go favored in the former, while his Pussycat Doll
(Real Quiet) attem pts to run back to her performance in
the GI La Brea S. in the La Canada.

On Balance...
Balance was a first-out winner sprinting down Santa
Anita’s hillside turf course in October and finished first
in the grassy Hidden Lite S. a month later, but was
DQ’d and placed third. Favored in her dirt debut, the
Nov. 27 Sharp Cat S., she took to the new surface
with aplom b and won the 1 1/16-mile race by 1 3/4
lengths. Again the crowd’s pick in the GI Hollywood
Starlet S., she couldn’t quite get past Diplomat Lady
and had to settle for second that day. Trainer David
Hofmans opted to give her January off, but she
showed no signs of rust off the brief respite. “I wasn’t
surprised that she put on that good an effort because
she always tries,” Hofmans said after yesterday’s race.
“She’s been training very well. I think she needed a
little freshening, and I think she got it so we’ll go on to
the next one [GI Santa Anita Oaks Mar. 12].” Click for the

Competing solely in Grade I and Grade II company
last year, Star Parade had seconds in the GI Apple
Blossom H. and GII Lady’s Secret BC H. to her credit,
as well as thirds in the GII Milady BC H. and GII Las
Palmas H. She won just one race all year, however,
annexing the GII Bayakoa H. at Hollywood Dec. 11,
following that up with a poor 10th in the grassy GII San
Gorgonio H. at Santa Anita Jan. 8. Looking to get back
on track returning to the dirt, she raced along in the
three path with Heavenly Humor (Distorted Humor) and
Healthy Addiction (Boston Harbor) to her inside. She
took a narrow lead in upper stretch and drove clear as
Proposed ran on for second. “I told [winning rider M artin Pedroza], ‘You ride her like you own her. Just get
her to relax and don’t fight her. If it’s on the lead, if it’s
behind horses, I don’t care. Just don’t fight her,’” said
trainer Darrell Vienna. “And he didn’t. He rode her
perfectly.” Vienna added that a return to the Apple
Blossom at Oaklawn Apr. 8 was in the cards. Jockey
Pat Valenzuela, on the runner-up, said, “She picked it
up real nice when I asked her around the far turn and
she finished well. We just couldn’t make up enough
ground on the winner.” Click for the brisnet.com chart

Rockport Harbor took a huge first step yesterday in
his four-year-old comeback. The lanky gray was considered an early favorite for the Kentucky Derby by many
on the strength of his juvenile wins in the GIII Nashua
S. and GII Remsen S. But then the wheels came off in
the form of injuries, and after a second to Greater Good
(Intidab) in the GIII Rebel S. over this strip in March and
a lackluster sixth in a m uddy renewal of the GII
Coolmore Lexington S. in April, he was put away to
regroup. The even-money pick in his return, he was put
right into the race by jockey Stewart Elliot, and the pair
quickly bounded out to a daylight lead. The tracking
Cougar Cat, perfectly placed, closed the gap on the
turn and, taking a short lead, looked as if he was going
to go right by, but Rockport Harbor regained command
and lengthened away in the final panel. “I was concerned because my horse hadn’t run in some time,”
admitted Elliot. “But when my horse came back and got
his head in front, I felt good because [he] just doesn’t
give up.” Click for the brisnet.com chart. Video, sponsored by Taylor Made.

Fourth to Mr. Light (Arg) in last year’s renewal, Gulch
Approval belied his 15-1 longshot odds and gam ely
won the second graded stakes
of his career. The gelding had
nine 2005 starts under his belt
before finding the winner’s circle
in his 10th, a Churchill allowance in his most recent Nov. 2,
but had raced adm irably in
stakes company several times.
He twice hit the board in graded
Equi-photo
events last spring, and completed the trifecta in the GI Shadwell Turf Mile in October. An outsider off the three-month freshening here,
he was hustled out to the fore and set leisurely splits
while shadowed by Old Dodge. Both had plenty in the
tank as they cut the corner for home, and Gulch Approval won the sprint to the wire under a stiff drive.

Pussycat Doll will be looking for her third straight
victory here. The bay filly, second behind champion
Sweet Catomine in last year’s GIII Santa Ysabel S.,
won the Audrey Skirball-Kenis S. at Hollywood Park last
November before a dominant 5 3/4-length victory in the
Dec. 31 GI La Brea S. last tim e out. “She’s a nice filly,”
commented jockey Garrett Gomez, who was aboard for
both stakes wins. “She seems to be doing everything
real well.”
Play Ballado took Aqueduct’s Nov. 2 Miss Oceana S.
by 7 1/2 lengths before a solid runner-up effort behind
Proposed in the Jan. 15 GII El Encino S. in her last trip
to the post. The lightly raced Seafree will be making her
first start beyond seven furlongs here for trainer Bobby
Frankel. The bay filly followed an eight-length

runner-up efforts at Keeneland Oct. 15 and at Churchill
Nov. 25. She makes her stakes debut off a narrow

the GI Champagne S. He ended his juvenile season with
a sixth-place effort behind Bluegrass Cat in the Oct. 28
GIII Nashua S., but returned victorious with a fourlength triumph in the Jan. 8 San Miguel S. last time
out. Garrett Gomez was aboard Too Much Bling for the
first time in the San M iguel and that effort has him
looking forward to the return call here. “I moved on him
just before we came off the turn and he went from five
off the lead to three in front,” Gomez said. “He showed
me a nice turn of foot, so that was encouraging.”
Peace Chant, a $900,000 KEESEP yearling, won his
debut by 3 1/4 lengths at Hollywood Park last December and was fourth after a wide trip in the San Miguel
S. Totally Gone jumps up to stakes company in just his
second start after an impressive debut victory. The
gelding powered clear to a 6 1/4-length win sprinting
5 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita Dec. 31.

Doneraile Court
SCR
2
Shimmer
Pulpit
12-1
Has exactly the same top as Skipping Court, but has
done much less developing, and is far more likely to run
well this time. She should beat that one, and could run
a new top, but would need one just to get a check.
3
Proposed
Benchmark
SCR
4
Paddy's Daisy
King of Kings (Ire)
20-1
Had a nice progressive pattern until last summer,
when the wheels came off. She tries dirt here, but her
sire gets much better turf runners (see sire profile), and
her grass figures are not competitive.
5
Pussycat Doll
Real Quiet
8-5
Has proven conclusively she loves an off track, jumping way forward both times she caught one. That last
was huge, and a repeat w ould win this for fun. But it
was almost a 7 point new top, and a killer effort for a
3yo filly, and will almost certainly cause a bounce.
Since she also has not show n she can run that fast
over a dry track, and only has one figure that really
makes her strong here, she's a bet-against. The only
caveat is, Baffert's horses are running lights out.
6
Seafree
Chief Seattle
8-1
Ran very big Thoro-Graph figures sprinting last fall,
and won without running her best in her only local
appearance. She stretches out here, and while her
pedigree is distance neutral, Frankel is very strong
short-to-long (see trainer profile). This one gets weight
from all the other contenders, and should save ground
on the lead-she's probably the most likely winner.
The
Play Ballado
Saint Ballado
4-1
Didn't get started until last summ er but ran w ell
when she did, and better when she went long. In her
first local try (and first around two turns) she returned
to her top, and she's still lightly raced, with a good
pattern for a new top. She's slower (worse top) than
the other contenders, but more likely to run her best
than anyone else in here.
8
Sharp Lisa
Dixieland Band
8-1
Ran very big when hurt by a wide trip in the Breeders' Cup as a juvenile, but hasn't developed at all since,
and is struggling just to get back to that level now.
With the post and weight, even a return to her best
won't do it.
Overview--Pussycat Doll is likely to bounce and is thus
vulnerable. Seafree and Play Ballado are the interesting
ones.

of the Week, click here.
Jerry Brown formed Thoro-Graph in 1982 to service the needs of horsemen
and professional handicappers. Since then, Thoro-Graph has been responsible
for the purchase of Belmont winner and champion Victory Gallop, two-time
Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Da Hoss, multiple track record setter and leading
sire Distorted Humor--a total of 70 horses who have gone on to win stakes
for their clients. Additionally, the last three NTRA national handicapping
championship winners used Thoro-Graph data. Thoro-Graph performance
figures take into account weight, ground loss, effect of wind on the time of
the race, and track speed. The lower the figure, the better the performance.
Among Thoro-Graph's innovations are the figure-based profiles, which enable
horsemen and serious handicappers to accurately assess the tendencies of
trainers in different situations, and sires and dam's runners at different
distances, over different surfaces, and at different ages. For more information about Thoro-Graph data and consulting services, go to

SANTA ANITA BOOSTS PURSES With all-sources
handle up nearly 20 percent, Santa Anita officials announced Friday a five-percent purse increase, effective
immediately and retroactive to opening day, Dec. 26.
“We want to thank our owners and trainers for really
stepping up here at this meet,” said track President Ron
Charles. “We’re currently averaging 9.1 horses per
race, and this is fueling som e dramatic increases in
handle. Our customers want depth. They w ant value,
and thanks to our horsemen, we’ve been able to deliver.” Through last Wednesday, the track had seen a
20-percent increase in on-track handle, with out-ofstate handle up 21 percent. All-sources handle, which
includes advance deposit wagering, was up approximately 19 percent. Attendance at the Arcadia, California track is up 25 percent. “The numbers have exceeded our greatest expectations,” added Charles.
“We’ve been blessed with good weather and we just
hope that continues. Santa Anita is an icon on the
Southern California sports landscape and it’s been
thrilling to see big crowds again and a real sense of
excitement here at the races.”

French Park Breezes for Bonnie Miss:
Steve Stan Stables’ French Park (Ecton Park) breezed
a solid half-mile yesterday morning at Gulfstream Park
as she gears up for her next start in the GII Bonnie Miss
S. Mar. 5. With regular rider Mark Guidry up, the gray
filly stopped the clock in :47, much to the delight of
trainer Helen Pitts. “She went awesome,” the conditioner enthused. “It was almost too good to be true. I
don’t want to say it was quicker than what I wanted,
because I wanted a solid workout and that’s what she
gave us.” French Park was perfect in three starts as a
juvenile, including wins in the GIII Pocahontas S. and
the GII Golden Rod S. She suffered her first loss in her
lone start this season, finishing second by a head in the
GIII Silverbulletday S. at Louisiana Downs Jan. 14.
