February 2013
Opening Mass:
‘Looking Beyond
Ourselves’ was the theme for our very
special Leadership Mass. It was lovely
to see so many past pupils, family
members, friends of the school, pupils
from our brother and sister schools and
Sisters of our Lady of the Mission
celebrating the beginning of our new
school year together.
Our Student
Leadership Team was commissioned.
We prayed for God’s guidance with
all our decisions and for a successful
year. We thank Fr Simon and Fr Tim
for celebrating the Mass.

Principal’s Message
Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau
A warm welcome is extended to all families as we begin our 146th year as a
school. Founded in 1867 by the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions, Sacred Heart
College has been serving the needs of Catholic families and their daughters.
Our school roll is on the rise. We currently have 293 students; a significant
increase on 2012 numbers, due largely to our healthy Year 9 intake. I hope you are
able to share some anecdote about Sacred Heart with prospective families to
encourage future enrolments.
At our Leadership Mass last Friday we announced and blessed our Student
Leadership Team. Congratulations to these 15 students who will be led by Head
Girl Anita Noetzli and Deputy Head Girl Aimee-Jane Anderson-O’Connor. The
theme of the Mass and our Special Character theme for the year is ‘Looking Beyond
Ourselves’. We aim to develop the sense of ‘mission’ across our school community
where love and support for others is emphasised. St Francis of Assisi said, ‘Go and
preach the Gospel and if you must, use words’.
We are delighted with our NCEA results. The % achievement rate at each of
Levels 1, 2 and 3 is excellent and well in excess of National percentages.
Congratulations is extended to the 58 students who achieved Level 1, 2 or 3 Merit or
Excellence Endorsements.
All learning programmes are now well underway. Please monitor your
daughter’s homework (set to reinforce learning) and also the balance of time spent
‘electronically connected’ (Facebook etc).
We are running sessions called ‘NCEA Unravelled’ for Years 11,12 and 13.
Valuable information about how NCEA works is being shared.
Parents can access information on our ultranet (http://
ultranet.sacredheartnapier.school.nz), click on NZQA and follow the
links.
We are fully staffed and welcome Miss
Carolyn Collins (History, English, Social Studies)
and Ms Fiona Fox (Textiles Technology) to the
team. We farewell Mr John Halas our Caretaker of Miss Collins
the past three years this week. John has done
great work and his friendly manner has been
appreciated by both the staff and students. We welcome Mr
Stephen McLean as his replacement.
Ms Fox
Students have been setting goals with their Form Teachers.
Look out for the template where Curriculum, Co-Curricular and Personal goals are
being set.
The B.O.T. ratified the Charter for 2013 which includes our three school-wide
goals. Check this out on our ultranet under the ‘Current Events’ link. The goals are:

To realise the potential of every student through expectations of excellence

To develop and sustain our Catholic Character throughout school life

To engage in teaching and learning strategies that promote lifelong learning
By the end of this first term the current Board of Trustees will have finished
their three-year term. Nominations will be called for soon for the next Board. Half
of our Trustees were not seeking re-election so there is room for new personnel.
Please consider making yourself available as a Trustee of Sacred Heart. Our
Returning Officer will call for nominations on Thursday 2 May. These close on 16
May.
Our Student Trustee, Grace Magee (Year 11), sailed on the Spirit of
Adventure in the Marlborough Sounds on a recent student trustee voyage. She
enthusiastically reported about her experience at a recent assembly.
Thank you to the many families and past pupils who attended our
Leadership Mass at St Patrick’s Church. It was a beautiful start to the school
year. Can I encourage your attendance at Sunday Mass; it is what we do as
families attending a Catholic college.
In this Year of Faith our relationship with Jesus as the rock of love and
hope in our lives is our prayer ...
- Regards and God’s blessings—Steve Bryan, Principal

Special Character
The Marist Fathers’ Community welcomed Brendan Jenke, Tom Kouijzer and
Adrian O’Flynn when they received their First Professions into the Society of Mary at
St Mary’s Church in Greenmeadows on 2 February. Congratulations and our
prayers are with them.
Ash
Wednesday:
We
celebrated
Ash
Wednesday last week with a Liturgy and
distribution of the ashes. Our foreheads are
marked with ashes to humble our hearts and
remind us to turn away from sin and be faithful to
God. Ashes are a symbol of penance and help
us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice. Ash
Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of
Lent. It is a season of penance, reflection, and
fasting which prepares us for Christ's
Resurrection on Easter Sunday.
Staff Retreat Day: To start the year staff enjoyed a day of contemplation. It was
led by Sister Barbara Cameron, RNDM and was a day that brought staff together to
remind us that we all need to put time aside in our busy lives for learning, silence,
contemplation and reflection. We put this into practice in the lovely grounds of Duart
House in Havelock North.
Vinnies: Meetings are held on Thursdays at lunch time (Bk 2) with Paola Minehan
who is our new co-ordinator. Students from any year level may attend and the focus
and projects for the year are decided by the group. Young Vinnies is all about
helping others in our community, home, school, or parish.
Sacraments: In my role as Youth Minister I support students in their Sacramental
journey; Baptism and Eucharist. I am available every Thursday and Friday and
alternate Wednesdays at Sacred Heart to connect with students. I look forward to
supporting their faith journey.
- Mrs Margaret von Hartitzsch, Youth Minister
Alms Giving: For the six weeks of Lent alms giving will be our focus. At assembly
each week an opportunity will be offered for donations of money or a food item.
This will be forwarded to charities at the end of Lent.
Religious Education topics:
Year 9 – Teachings of Jesus
Year 10 – Sinfulness and Reconciliation
Year 11—Trinity
Year 12—Creative Expressions of Faith

NZQA news: Change in University Entrance requirements: As from 2014 the
requirements for University Entrance (UE) will change. This will affect all students
who are now in Year 12 and below. It will also affect any Year 13s who take a ‘gap
year’ before attending university.
From 2014, to be awarded UE you will need:
 NCEA Level 3
 Three subjects—at Level 3 or above, made up of:
- 14 credits each, in three approved subjects where achievement standards
are gained.
 Literacy—10 credits at Level 2 or above made up of:
- 5 credits in reading
- 5 credits in writing
 Numeracy—10 credits at Level 1 or above.
Once you have met the requirements for University Entrance it will appear on your
Record of Achievement. For further detail please follow the link …
http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications-standards/awards/university-entrance/
While University Entrance (UE) will continue to be the minimum requirement to go to
a New Zealand university, most New Zealand universities generate a rank score
from a student’s top 80 credits in Level 3 NCEA. It is important that students choose
subjects that will enable them to achieve UE and achieve grades to reflect maximum
effort if university is their preferred destination.

… after silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible
is music. - Aldous Huxley
The Music department wishes all students and families a Happy New Year. May
the arts flourish in your lives.
Itinerant music students have settled into a productive routine. We are proud to
have 60 girls enrolled in the itinerant music programme. There is a waiting list for
the majority of our instruments. We advise that our policy for the itinerant music
programme is to enrol in November 2013 for music tuition in 2014. We encourage
and expect all students to attend lessons every week and to build a practice
schedule into their school routine.
Thank you to our itinerant music teachers, Mr David Boston, Miss Frances
Morgan, Mr Chick Davis, Ms Sarah Kirk, Mrs Suzanne Bradley and Mrs Sarah
Delany for their loyalty and expertise. A special acknowledgement to Mrs Norma
Smith who has tutored violin, viola and cello for many years. Due to low
enrolments this year Mrs Smith is taking a break but intends to return in 2014
when we hope there will be renewed interest in these instruments. Mrs Smith has
very kindly offered to play in the school orchestra when required; a generous
gesture for which we are very grateful. Thank you Norma.
“The Wiz”, our 2013 Production hits the boards on 10, 11, 12 April.

Barbershop Workshop: “Young Singers in Harmony Workshop”
will be held at Hastings Girls’ High School. Letters will be sent home
soon. This is always exceptional and the students and audiences
receive a lot of pleasure from participating in this workshop.
Events to keep an eye out for are Chamber Music NZ Concert series (Music
students please return your concert selection now), the NZ Symphony Orchestra
tours, The Royal NZ Ballet performance in March—Groups of 6+ in B reserve at
$36 per ticket, and later in August/September. Concessions are available for all
these events so watch this space! Chamber Music Competitions and The Big
Sing in June are also on the Music Calendar.
Finally ….We are planning a trip to Wellington in September for 9
textiles students to attend the dress rehearsal of the 2013 WOW
show. This is guaranteed to be an outstanding spectacle of costume,
music, stage craft and choreography. More about this soon.
- Best wishes from Mrs Ebbs, Arts Co-ordinator

countries. New Zealand is sending 13 talented youth who will
perform in a variety of performing arts fields, including music,
singing , dance and drama.

Sport
Tabloid Sports
Following our Inaugural Mass on Friday 15th February the College Tabloid Sports
were held with the theme this year, ‘Peace and Harmony’. It was a hot afternoon in
the sun with much fun being had by all who participated. Each year group dressed in
a different colour with the Yr13’s dressing up as ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and
entertaining us with their pre-tabloid show down. Each form class competed for top
points in the 14 different activities with 13DS claiming first place. Included in the
activities this year was an inflatable obstacle course; the staff vs Yr13 student relay
being one of the highlights of the afternoon. Thanks to the staff involved for making
the event extra special this year.
Summer Sport
We leapt straight into sport this term with teams competing in volleyball, tennis,
cricket, touch and athletics. Thank you to the staff and parents who have put their
hand up to coach or manage a team. We are currently on the look-out for coaches
and managers willing to assist with winter sport, especially in netball. If you are able
to help in this area please contact the school.
Athletics Sports
Our next major sporting event will be the Athletics Sports on Wednesday 27 th
February at Marewa Park. We welcome parents and friends to join us at the park for
a great day of sporting competition. See you there!

Road Bikes needed for Y13 PE triathlon:
Do you or one of your friends have a lonely road bike sitting in
the garage? Our Yr 13 students would love to be able to
borrow one to prepare and compete in a triathlon on Sunday
24 March. The bikes don't have to be new or flash, just in safe
working order. Basic repairs (punctures, chains oiled etc) can
be done by the PE Department. Please contact Rachel
Dickinson
(rdickinson@sacredheartnapier.school.nz)
or
phone the school to leave a message.
Sacred Heart College Cricket 2013: The season starts with a
game against Taradale High School at St Patrick’s School on
Thursday. We now have a healthy sized squad of 14 players from
all year levels. The girls have been practising at the Whitmore
indoor cricket facility every Wednesday after school and are
progressing well. The school finished 3rd in the Girls’ Cricket League
last term, but know that this term will be much tougher as there are
two leagues consisting of eight secondary school teams. There is
always room to increase the size of the squad so see Mr Reeves if
you are interested in joining the team. We will keep you posted on our progress
with results and key performances.

A plea … We have been blessed this year with the loan of pianos
from the EIT. Unfortunately these are to be returned by the end of
this year which will leave us with itinerant teaching rooms without
these instruments. If you have or know of anyone who would like
to donate, loan or sell a piano in good condition and at a
reasonable price, please get in touch with Mr Lundall in our Music
Department or Karen McGrail. We will be eternally grateful.

A fundraising opportunity has arisen
through grandparents of one of our
students. The family are wool exporters
and they are selling wood fadges for $3

They also sell sheep manure which is great
for your garden. If

Library Corner:
2013 is very much
underway.
The
Marian Library has
been a busy place
as we introduce the Year 9 students to
making the most of our library facility.
Other classes have been in to get their
reading programmes kick- started and
begin their research assignments.
A wonderful group of Year 13 students
have offered to be part of our LibraryHearts team and serve our Sacred
Heart community as Librarians. We are
in the process of training and then they
will be rostered on to cover the
different breaks in the day.
At Sacred Heart we strive to foster a
spirit of exploration and challenge. One
of our challenges is to encourage our
students to become life-long learners.
Each of our students and staff have
individual interests and needs. In order
to meet these needs our collection and
services in the Library offer historical,
global,
cultural
and
political
perspectives that help to cater to their
interests but also to nurture a spirit of
exploration.
This year I will have a weekly
newsletter that can be accessed
through the school Ultranet, under
‘Library Links’. In this newsletter I will
often have links to interesting sites that
promote reading and other points of
interest. I will also have books
reviewed by students.
