Volume 94, Issue 44 • October 31, 2010 On 28th Avenue between Lake and 31st Streets Minneapolis, MN 55406 • 612-729-8358 • office@htlcmpls.org • www.htlcmpls.org WORSHIP SERVICES: 8:45 and 11:00 am • CHURCH SCHOOL: 9:45 am • Jay Carlson, Pastor A CONFIRMATION REFRESHER This Sunday we will celebrate with nine of our Holy Trinity youth as they make their affirmation of Baptism during the 11:00 service. We chose this Sunday, October 31, for the confirmation service because it is traditionally the day to remember the lives and work of Martin Luther and other church reformers. As the story goes, it was on October 31, 1517, that Martin Luther posted his Ninety-five Theses on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, as a way of initiating a public debate about certain church practices. That debate led to significant reforms, and Martin Luther’s work is a reminder for us of the Church’s continual need for reform. REFORMATION SUNDAY On this day we celebrate the heart of our faith: the gospel of Christ—the good news—that makes us free! We pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to unite the church today in its proclamation and witness to the world. In the waters of baptism we are made one body; we pray for the day that all Christians will also be one at the Lord’s table. LESSONS Jeremiah 31:3-34 Psalm 46 Romans 3:19-28 John 8:31-36 One of Martin Luther’s passions was making Christian education available for everyone. He translated the Bible into a German language that was understandable for most people, and he wrote educational resources to be used in churches and in the home. One of the best known of these resources is the The Small Catechism, which Luther wrote for parents to use in teaching their children and which is still often used in Confirmation classes. If you attended confirmation in a Lutheran church, perhaps you, like me, had to memorize the Small Catechism. Perhaps you can still recite Luther’s explanation to the Third Article of the Apostles’ Creed (“I believe that I cannot by my own understanding or effort believe in Jesus Christ my Lord or come to him. But the Holy Spirit has called me through Gospel…”) Or maybe you could use a refresher on what you learned in confirmation. If so, I especially encourage you to attend worship on Sunday morning. At both services, we will include some words from Dr. Luther, including his reflections on the liturgy. It will be a way for all of us to hear again—or for the first time—Luther’s passion for the Gospel. —Jay M. Carlson, Pastor Although Christ is present in all creatures, and I might find Christ in stone, in fire, in water, or even in a rope, yet Christ does not wish that I seek him there apart from the Word, and cast myself into the fire or the water, or hang myself on the rope. Christ is present everywhere, but he does not wish that you grope for him everywhere. Grope rather where the Word is, and there you will lay Hold of Christ in the right way. —Martin Luther 2010 HAWKINSON PEACE & JUSTICE AWARDS — NOV 5, 5:30 PM Congratulations to Ken and Carol Masters, members of Holy Trinity, who will be receiving the 2010 Hawkinson Peace & Justice Awards. SUNDAY ADULT FORUM 9:55 am — In the library October 31 “Worship’s Windows to the World” Mons Teig – Prof. Emeritus, Luther Seminary There is a vital connection between what we do on Sunday and all the rest of our lives. The outward movement of worship to the world helps all worshipers discover and renew their baptismal vocation. Jesus so loved the world that he gave the church to the world. The journey to the world begins in worship. In this session, we will look in depth at our worship forms to discover how they give us a lens through which we see all of life in a creative and life-altering way. November 7 “Hymnody in Lutheran Worship” Prof. Paul Westermeyer, Luther Seminary An exploration of hymns as Lutherans have developed and conceived them. Three things will be briefly covered: what generates Lutheran Hymnody, an overview of the huge repertoire of hymns that Lutherans have spawned, and how hymns function in services of worship.
