Formed in 2003 as the only sports league of its kind, Texas Rollergirls Rock-n-Rollerderby® started today's flat track
roller derby movement. There are now more than 400 flat track roller derby leagues worldwide, with more forming every
week. In its current incarnation, roller derby is a genuine athletic competition complete with well-defined rules,
divisions, tournaments, and a governing body: theWomen's FlatTrackDerbyAssociation (WFTDA). The league was born
and bred in Austin, Texas, and is composed of 80 skaters. Texas Rollergirls, Inc., is 100% skater-owned, managed and
operated. In order to expand and share our love for flat track derby with other like-minded women, we formed a
recreational league called Rec-n-Rollerderby.
Rec-n-Rollerderby is intended as an athletic and social organization to give all women above the age of 18 an
opportunity to learn and play the sport of flat track roller derby. In the spirit of a recreational organization, it offers a
fun, safe, and competitive athletic environment without the demands of commitment or skill level that are required of
derby athletes at the national level.
Currently, Texas Rollergirls is a member of WFTDA, a national organizing body that regulates tournaments and
interleague play between all of its member leagues. A clear distinction should be made between Texas Rollergirls four
teams and travel team as a competing and ranked league within the WFTDA, and the Recreational League of Texas
Rollergirls, which does not compete at the WFTDA level and will only compete with other teams within the recreational
league.
The recreational league of Texas Rollergirls is open to any and all women 18 years and up who are not currently skating for
another roller derby league. This may include retired Texas Rollergirls skaters, skaters who one day aspire to tryout for a
Texas Rollergirls competitive team through standard league tryouts, or skaters just interested in learning to play roller
derby while having a great time doing it!
