SCHOOL OF EDUCATION PgDE (SECONDARY) www.uws.ac.uk This course prepares you for a career as a secondary school teacher. With a strong practical bias, this course provides the formal teaching qualification for provisional registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). ABOUT THE COURSE Teachers must be able to plan, implement and evaluate learning courses within their chosen discipline whilst recognising that their specialism contributes to a wider curriculum that includes interdisciplinary studies. Teachers must have a fundamental commitment to the welfare of pupils, meeting learning needs to encourage personal and educational development. Secondary teacher education is carried out in partnership with schools in which you will spend substantial periods of placement. University-based study focuses on curriculum content, methods of teaching, learning, and assessment, alongside the theoretical and practical aspects of professional studies in education, psychology and educational technology. The course has been reviewed to take account of the views of the Scottish Government and the GTCS, which include the importance of continually developing close collaboration between the University and schools, building upon the established partnerships and the strengths of the course. Student attainment will be progressed against a set of benchmark statements established as part of ‘The Standards for Registration in Scotland’, producing teachers who can develop their subject work from an informed, broader perspective on the nature of learning, the wider curriculum, and the educational system as a whole.
