Summer Schools
This summer is a critical time for Year 12s. You need to be completing something over the six week break that will
help open the door to universities and employers when you leave school.
Two great opportunities are in this Bulletin. For ICT and Computing students please see the GCHQ Summer School.
For all Year 12 students please see the Sutton Trust Summer Schools.
Books
We hope that you have developed a love of reading over your time at school. Reading opens your mind up to a
world of possibilities and helps make you see interest in your life and in the lives of others.
As well as being an endless pleasure, reading can open a host of doors to you. It can give you a frame of reference
so that you can understand other peoples’ references and can give you the language and ideas to express complex
thoughts.
Please, always be reading. Always be enjoying your reading. Use the last section of this Bulletin to give you some
ideas on what you might read .
Work Experience
We expect all our Sixth Form students to have completed work experience by the time they leave Central Foundation Sixth Form.
The perfect time to complete this is Year 12. Please see some of the opportunities in this Bulletin to help give you
the chance to complete your work experience.
Open Days
The transition from A-levels and BTECs to undergraduate degrees is a bigger jump in difficulty than that between
GCSEs and Sixth Form. Universities try to support you with this in your first term of your degree.
However, universities also try and support you by giving you the opportunity to taste what university degrees are like
with open days and taster day. Please make the most of these opportunities.
Access Schemes
There are plenty of bursaries and grants offered by each university to support students financially at university.
However, there are also many provided by national corporations and businesses. For Year 13 students from African
and Caribbean backgrounds, the Bank of England is providing one of these. Details are found in this Bulletin.
Student Finance
Year 13s applying for university must now apply for Student Finance.
Also remember, Year 13s must only make their final Firm and Insurance choices after 23rd March.

GCHQ Summer School
This summer, students from across the UK have the chance to immerse themselves in the world of intelligence by
living and learning at one of GCHQ’s Cyber Summer Schools.
Now in its second year, the Summer Schools programme offers successful applicants a chance to develop their own
cyber skills, learn how GCHQ protects the UK against cyber threats and meet other people with similar interests.
A student from last year said: "It was an exceptional experience, giving us a chance to enter the industry and earn
experience unique to this place. The accommodation, pay and courses were excellent and really serve to attract
students to this opportunity."
To deal with demand for places, the summer schools will now be based at four sites across the UK rather than just
two.
Cyber Exposure, which runs from 11 July to 19 August at sites in Scarborough, the Manchester area, and South
West London, is for those with a natural curiosity for technology and problem-solving. It will be open to students
studying any subject who have five GCSEs, including Maths and English, and are also on track to achieve two ALevels at C grade or higher (or equivalent).
Work at both summer schools will cover a wide range of technologies. Students will learn about GCHQ’s role in defending the UK against cyber threats whilst being paid £250 a week.
At the end of the placements students may be offered the opportunity to apply for future summer schemes or permanent roles at GCHQ.
To apply, visit the GCHQ careers website at www.gchq-careers.co.uk. Applications open from 18 January.

Professor Povey's Perplexing Problems: Pre-University Physics and Maths Puzzles with Solutions
by Thomas Povey
If you are studying maths (or physics) and are interested in extending your thinking, and perhaps considering studying a subject like this at university, then this book of problems is perfect.
The author is Professor of Engineering Science at Oxford and has a palpable joy in his subject. These problems are
to enjoy and spend time thinking about, they take you beyond the confines of exam curriculums. Importantly for you,
experience of extending your thinking in this way is excellent preparation for interviews at top universities.
Mr Johnstone advises: “I have one piece of advice: as with the whole book, the solutions are brilliantly written with a
great historical and mathematical perspective, but... don't look at them. A good maths problem can be exhilarating to
try to solve; embrace your difficulties, give yourself time to think, speak to your friends and teachers about it, spend a
good few months on one of these problems before even thinking of looking at the solution. “
