Introduction
TheAucklandPrideParadeistheshowcaseoftheAucklandPrideFestivalandreflectsourgreat
city,thebreadthofculturaldiversitywithinit,andtheprideandacceptancethatweenjoyinliving
in such a vibrant place. It brings together communities from across Aotearoa to celebrate the
RainbowCommunityandwilltakeplaceonPonsonbyRoadonSaturday20thFebruaryat6:00pm.

Stories,Myths&Legends
KõreroTara
Fromtheearliestspokenwordstorieshavepasseddownthroughthegenerations.Usingmyths,
talesandfairytales,throughclassicliteratureandmodernmovies,NewZealandhistoryhasbeen
shapedby stories and legends. The 2016 Auckland Pride Festival will celebrate the art of story
tellinginallitsforms,sharingStories,Myths&Legendsacrossthegatheredcommunity.
2016marksthe30thanniversaryoftheHomosexualLawReformActinNewZealand,asignificant
milestonefortheRainbowcommunity.Therearestoriestotell–fromthemigrantsettlersthat
buildAotearoa,thosewhofoughtforthelawchange,throughtoagenerationnotbornin1986.
Thesearethestoriesthatbearwitnesstotheongoingstrugglesandsuccessesthathaveshaped
theRainbowcommunityasitistoday.
Whetheryouhavegossip,kõreropakioryarnstoshare;historytopassonoroutlandishtalesto

telling. Thousands of people watch the parade each year and it provides a showcase for
community groups and businesses. They see your message of support for the equality and

InformationandRulesforPrideParadeEntrants
Eligibility-WhoCanEnter
1. Eligibilityfallsintothefollowing2categories:
CategoryA
Applications from Rainbow Community individuals, groups or organisations. Your entry
doesnotneedtobefocusedonaRainbowrelatedmessage.
CategoryB
Other organisations supporting or celebrating the Rainbow Community. You must
communicateaclear,supportiveandpositivemessagerelatingtotheRainbowcommunity.
2. Allentriesmustprovidedetailsofyourartisticconceptandproductionvalues(i.e.howyou
aregoingtomakeyourvisionareality).Thisinformationwillbeusedtohelpusdevelop
youroveralllookanddeliverthebestpossibleviewingexperienceforattendees.
3. Auckland Pride Festival Inc reserves the right to refuse participation to entries that have
breachedParadeguidelinesoractinanywaycontrarytothePridemissionandgoals.
4. Entriesmustnotbediscriminatory,homophobic,biphobic,transphobic,intersexphobic,
racist,sexistorbreachanydefamationlaw.
5. Entries will also not be accepted from discriminatory organisations, organisations whose
policies and procedures discriminate against or fail to uphold the human rights of the
RainbowCommunity.
AssistanceandAssessment
Yourapplicationwillbeassessedtoensureyourideasareinalignmentwiththemissionandgoals
oftheAucklandPrideFestivalInc.Indeterminingthis,APFIwilllooktointernationalbestpractice
andtheRainbowTickguidelines
We will offer advice and support to ensure your entry reaches its creative potential and
participantswillbeabletoattendparadeworkshopstodevelopcreativeideasandnetworkwith
othergroups.Whereverpossiblewewillassistyoutoinspire,exciteandchallengetheaudience.

Animals
Dogs,cats,andotherdomesticpetsarepermittedintheParade.Werecommendthatyoumake
prior arrangements with the SPCA and/or Auckland Council Dog Patrol. In accordance with
AucklandCouncilregulations,youareresponsibleforcleaningupafteryouranimalsintheParade
setuparea,alongtheParaderoute,andinthepackdownarea.
Choreography/PerformanceManoeuvres
Pleaseattachadescriptionofallchoreography,manoeuvres,formations,orotherexhibitionsthat
may slow or stop the Parade during their execution. Your description should include the time
required for each manoeuvre and you will be asked to demonstrate it/them at the Parade
ParticipantTrainingWorkshops.AnyattempttoincludeanundisclosedmanoeuvreonParadeday
mayresultinremovaland/ordenialoffutureparticipationintheAucklandPrideParade.
Conduct
Parade participants must demonstrate respect for the tone of the Parade and consideration for
theaudiencewhichwillincludefamilygroupsandchildren.Thefollowingartisticguidelinesapply

ororganisationsareallowedwithouttheexpresswrittenpermissionoftheParadeProducer.Such
permission, if granted, may include additional fees and conditions. Please contact us for more

Lighting&Sound
Withtheearlierstarttimein2016,Lightingwon’tbesoprevalent.However,getintouchif
youneedadviceorassistancewithlighting,soundandsourcingvehicles.Pridehasrelationships
withanumberofsuppliersinthelocalarea.

FloatMarshals
EveryfloatmustsupplyitsownteamofFloatMarshalswhowillwalktheParaderoutewithyour
floatandactassafetymarshals.Itisyourresponsibilitytosourcethesemarshalsandensurethey
are present on Parade day. Float Marshals are required to attend a mandatory training session.
ThetrainingsessionswillcovertheParadeset-uparea,route,pack-downarea,aswellashealth
andsafetyinformation.
FloatMarshalsSafetyRules:
• EnsurethesafetyofyourFloatcrew,othercrewsnearbyandthepublic
• AlwaysstaywithyourFloat
• FloatMarshalsmustbealcoholanddrugfree
• Donotthrowanythingintothecrowd
• DonotgetonoroffyourFloatoranyassociatedvehiclewhenitismoving.
• FloatMarshalsmustwalkthelengthoftheParaderoute.
YoumusthavethecorrectnumberoftrainedFloatMarshalsonthedayoftheParade–ifyouare
refusedentryonthisbasisnorefundwillbeprovided.

vehicles (e.g. trucks, cars, convertibles, floats) additional Float Marshals will be required.

RouteMarshals(providedbytheParadeorganiser)
StationaryMarshalsarelocatedatregularintervalsalongtheentireParaderoute.Theirprimary
rolesaretoavertinjuryandpreventthecrowdfrommovingontotheParaderoute.Stationary
MarshalsareassistedbySecurityOfficers,asandwhererequired.
GapMarshalsarestationedalongtheParaderouteonthetrafficIslands-theirroleistominimize
gapsandtoensuretheflowoftheParadeismaintained.Theywillprovideinstructionstoyour
grouptoslowdown,increaseyourspeed,orresumeasafepacebutatnopointwillyoubeasked
to assume a pace that is faster than what you can safely manage. Your Float Marshals will be
responsibleforassistingtheGapMarshalstogetyourgrouptocomplywiththeirdirections.
OrderofParadeParticipants
AnumberoffactorsdetermineyourplacementintheParade,suchasthetheme,thenumberof
large trucks in the Parade, the type of entries, the size of the entry, and the number of
participants.WiththeParadestartingattheearliertimeof6:00pm,considerationwillbegivento
thosethatwishtobeplacedtowardstheendoftheParadeorder.TheParadeProducerhasthe
finalsayontheorderoftheParade.
ParadeRoute
The Parade will begin in the set-up area on Ponsonby Road at Three Lamps and proceed south
along Ponsonby Road to the pack-down areas in Hopetoun Street and Crummer Road just after
WesternPark.Set-upcommencesfrom2.00pmandyoumustbeinyourallocatedposition,ready
to depart, no later than the time that is given to you. The Parade will commence promptly at
6:00pm.

Awarningwillbegiventoyourgroupshouldanyoftheseinfractionsoccur,andapenaltyof$500
foreachinfractionmaybelevied.Ifinfractionscontinueafterthewarninghasbeengiven,your
entrymayberemovedfromtheroute.
Training
All volunteers and marshals, as well as one of your group members, must attend the training
sessions.Youwillbeadvisedofthetrainingdatesviaemail.

Please comply with New Zealand Road Code regulations. All vehicles must be insured,
registered,road-worthyandingoodoperatingcondition.
Thepack-downareaisdesignedforyoutodismantleyourvehicleandmakeitroad-safefor
removal.Planforadrivertostaywiththevehicleatalltimesintheset-upandPack-down
area.
Automaticvehiclesarepreferredbutnotmandatory.Manualvehiclesaremoreproneto
breakdownsduetoexcessiveclutchuseduringtheParade.

• If you have approved/permitted giveaways, please hand these to the crowd rather than

• Use paper streamers in place of confetti, as it is easier to clean up. Please do not throw

ThesefeesassistustomeetthecostsofrunningaParadeofthissizeandalsotomeetoursocial
responsibilities.Theyaresetaccordingtothesizeandtypeoftheentry.The2016feeshavebeen
simplifiedtoallowRainbowcommunitygroupstotakepartmorecosteffectivelythaninprevious
years. Commercial and sampling fees see slight increases in recognising the increased audience.
