AP Exams • AP Exams are administered by schools worldwide on set dates each May. • Exams usually last around three hours. • Each AP Exam contains: • Multiple-choice questions • Free-response questions (essay, problem-solving, oral response) AP Exam Scores 5 = extremely well qualified 4 = well qualified 3 = qualified 2 = possibly qualified 1 = no recommendation AP Scholar Awards AP Scholar Granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams. AP Scholar with Honor Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. AP International Diploma AP International Diploma (APID) • Promotes global competencies and perspectives, and high academic standards. • Demonstrates to universities a student’s academic achievement in multiple subjects and interdisciplinary areas. • There is no additional fee for schools or students. • Students obtain the APID by achieving the required AP Exam scores. AP International Diploma (APID) Requirements: Scores of 3 or higher on required combination of five AP Exams •Two AP Exams from two different world language & culture courses OR Two AP Exams from one world language & culture course and one English course •One AP Exam designated as offering a global perspective (Government and Politics: Comparative, Human Geography, World History) •One exam from science or mathematics •One additional exam from among any content areas except English and world languages AP International Diploma (APID) IMPORTANT NOTE ! • The APID is not a substitute for a high school diploma but provides additional certification of academic excellence. • As the APID requires a score of 3 or higher on five AP Exams, it allows students to demonstrate that they have exceeded most university entry requirements, and some of the most competitive scholarship awards consider students’ AP Exam scores. Many universities also use AP Exam scores to place students into honors classes. Universities Value and Recognize AP •More than 90% of four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. grant advanced placement, credit or both for successful AP Exam scores. •Among selective universities, AP is identified as being even more valuable. • With AP, students get recognized and universities find the kinds of students they are looking for. Universities Worldwide Recognize AP • More than 600 universities in 55 countries outside the U.S. recognize AP for credit, placement and/or when making admission decisions. • Every university in Canada grants advanced placement and/or credit for AP. • Most U.K. institutions utilize AP in admission. • Country-wide recognition policies exist in Austria, France, Germany and Norway. • 162 universities in 26 Latin American and Caribbean countries recognize AP. Why Universities Recognize and Value AP •Provides a standard, reliable assessment of university-level concepts and skills necessary for success in postsecondary studies. •Helps universities identify students who have challenged themselves and have succeeded academically. •Attracts motivated students eager to double major, engage in deeper, in more advanced courses at the university. •Is supported by research. •University faculty are involved in the development and review of AP. Value of AP for Universities ―One of the best standard predictors of academic success at Harvard is performance on Advanced Placement Examinations.‖ -William R. FitzsimmonsDean of Admissions, Harvard University ―Completing AP Courses is one way applicants demonstrate a willingness to accept academic challenges. Strong grades and high test scores certainly demonstrate preparation for college.‖ -Lori Goldman, Director of Enrollment Services, University of Arizona AP Exams are Objectively Evaluated • AP Exams are scored by highly trained AP Readers from colleges, universities and high schools worldwide, not the students’ own teachers. • AP Exams provide an external, reliable validation of the quality of teaching and learning in a classroom. AP Exam Fees • AP Exam fee for 2014 is $119 per exam. • For students with financial need, the College Board provides a $24-26 per exam fee reduction. How do Students Enroll in AP Courses • Students can talk to an AP teacher, a school counselor or the AP Coordinator at their school about the courses they want to take, the course workload and any preparation they might need for these university-level courses. • NOVA recommendations and policies: - not more than 3 AP subjects/year - course prerequisites - AP Potential (based on your PSAT scores) How do Students Enroll in AP Courses AP Course Prerequisites Grade Enrollment •Biology Biology R/H 11/12 •Calculus AB Precalculus R 12 •Calculus BC Precalculus H 12 •Chemistry Chemistry and Algebra 2 11/12 •English Language and Composition English 10 H 11 •English Literature and Composition AP English Language/English 11H 12 •Environmental Science Biology and Chemistry 11/12 •Government and Politics: Comparative History H/AP W.History 11/12 •Government and Politics: United States History H/AP W.History 11/12 •Human Geography Social Science 10/11/12 •Macroeconomics Algebra 2 11/12 •Microeconomics Algebra 2 11/12 •Physics I&II Physics H (Pre AP) and Algebra 2 11/12 •Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism Physics H (Pre AP) /AP I/II and Basic Calculus 12 •Physics C: Mechanics Physics H (Pre AP) /AP I/II and Basic Calculus 12 •Psychology / 12 •Spanish Lang.&Cult.
