CourseObjective:
Introductiontoelectricityandthebasictechnicalskillsfortheatricallightingandsoundtechnology.
CourseGoals:
Thiscourseisabasicintroductiontothetheoryandpracticeoftheatricallighting,soundtechnology,
andfundamentalsofdesign.Throughclasslectures,projects,and‘handson’laboratoryexperiencethe
studentcanexpecttobecomefamiliarwiththebasicsofelectricity,stagelighting/soundequipment,
andcontrolsystems.Bytheendofthecourse,thestudentshouldhaveabasicunderstandingoflighting
andsoundinrelationtotechnologyanddesign.
Attendance:
Expected.Morethantwounexcusedabsenceswillresultinthelossofonelettergradestepperone
absencethereafter(B+toaB).Studentsareresponsibleforallinformationpresentedand/orassigned.
Attendancewillbetaken.Predictedabsenteeismshouldbediscussedwiththeinstructor(s)nolessthan
oneweekpriortotheevent.Anystudentmissingaclassforanyreasonisresponsibleforgettingnotes
andhandoutsfromafellowstudent,nottheinstructor.Studentsareexpectedtoenterclassontime
andstaythroughtheentirelecture.Ifyouarelaterthan15minutestothebeginningofclassyouwillbe
consideredabsent.Beingtardythreetimesistheequivalentofanabsence.Nofoodordrinksare
allowedintheclassroom.
LabRequirement:
Allstudentsarerequiredtocomplete45hoursoflaboratorytimeworkingintheElectricsShop.
Acceptingacrewassignmentforaproductioncanalsofulfillall,orpart(dependingontheshow),ofthe
labrequirementforthecourse.AllhoursmustbedoneinadditiontoProductionandPerformance,
Stagecraftoranyotherlab/hourcommitment.Failuretocompletethelabrequirementwillresultin
failureoftheentirecourse;NOincompleteswillbegiven.
Youwillalsoberequiredtoworkatleastonestrikewhichwillaccountforthreehoursofyourtime.You
shouldexpecttoaverage3hoursperweekintheshoptoaccommodateyour45hourcommitment
unlessyouarecrewingashow.

DressCode:
Pleaseweartheappropriateclothingtotheshopforalllabhours.Appropriateclothingconsistsof
PANTS,close-toedtennisshoes,boots,orsneakers(NOsandals,flipflops,Toms,orflatsofanysort),
pantswithbeltloopsandonerealpocket(NOLEGGINGSORYOGAPANTS).Donotwearskirtsor
dressesasmuchoftheworkforthisclassisdoneonladdersand/orhighintheair.Danglingjewelry
shouldnotbewornasitisahazardandifhairlengthrequirespleasebringahairtietokeephairoutof
faceandeyes.Yourclothingmaygetdirty,torn,andpaintedupon,sodonotwearanythingyoucan’t
beartopartwith.Failuretodressappropriatelywillresultinbeingsenthomeandnotreceivingshop
hoursforthatday.

ThissemesteroneofthedepartmentproductionswillbeperformedattheHippodromeTheatre.The
showisStageKiss,ifyouattendthisproductionandwriteanadditionalcritique(followingthesame
guidelinesasbelowforashowcritique)youwillreceivefive(5)extracreditpoints.
ShowCritiques:
Youarerequiredtoattend3UFproductionsoverthecourseofthesemester.Inresponsetoyourchoice
oftwooftheproductions,youwillwriteashort2-3page,double-spacedcritiquefollowingthe
