Welcome to The Ramayana The Ramayana is one of the world’s oldest tales; it sparkles as one of the two great Sanskrit epics along with The Mahabharata. Some believe that it was the first poem of the world, written by Valmiki who was inspired by the God Bhrama, the Creator himself. Modern scholars say the story began in the ancient oral tradition around 300 BCE and has been passed on by countless generations in many languages and traditions. This incredible, enduring story is told all over the world in endless forms including theatre, dance, song, prose, visual art, film, graphic novels and animation. Our adaptation was written by Peter Oswald, a British playwright with an affinity for Shakespeare and classical text, and was produced at London’s National Theatre in 2001. One of the greatest challenges of telling a religious story is striving to define the nature of God and how divinity is portrayed. Although I am not Catholic, I had the pleasure of working for a Jesuit astronomer one summer in Rome and his insight stays with me. “God’s splendors are manifold. It is like a blind man touching an elephant. He would describe it differently depending on whether he touched the foot or trunk or tail and it would all be true.” Everyone’s viewpoint is unique. Rama is God come down in human form; the sacred and the earthly come together. Along his journey, Rama awakens the divinity within all sentient beings, saying, “The sun and moon and stars will fail, but when they darken, you must look within, where I shine brighter than a world of flame! What do you fear, when you are seeds of me? I am not I, I am the air you breathe, and your best thought.” Creating a world in which to tell this dynamic, complex story is thrilling and daunting. On the surface it is a fabulous, entertaining adventure, and yet its spiritual depth is infinite, its symbols and metaphors both mysterious and illuminating. The Ramayana has captivated my imagination, stimulated my mind and inspired me to seek the sacred in life and art. The truths found in this primordial epic have resonated through the ages and remain relevant, vital and powerful today. Enjoy the show! Allison Arkell Stockman Director The Ramayana by Peter Oswald Allison Arkell Stockman Director A.J. Guban Scenic/Lighting Designer Kendra Rai Costume Designer Tom Teasley Composer & Live Performer Anna St. Germain Mask Designer Samina Vieth Properties Designer Gaurav Gopalan Dramaturg Daniel Flint Technical Director Cheryl Gnerlich Stage Manager The Ramayana: The Journey of Rama, a True LeaderA Handbook of Dharma, or Truthful Action AUM (Invocation of all Trinities) The Ramayana, or the Journey of Rama, is the pre-eminent epic of India, and her oldest. To this day it is performed as a passion play all over India just as it has been for thousands of years, during the festival of Dushehra, a celebration of the victory of light over darkness. This celebration, lasting over several days of feasting, ceremonies and socialization, ends with the festival of lights, Diwali, the most sacred of festivals for the Hindus. This much-ado is a loving and grateful ode to India’s most cherished superhero, the Lord Rama, the acme of Duty, Principle and Virtue, an ideal man from an ideal age. The Ramayana is a richly woven tapestry, chockfull of metaphors and symbols, and can be, not unlike the Greek epics, a tad intimidating to the uninitiated. However, at its core, The Ramayana, like its younger sister The Mahabharata, and its Greek cousins, The Iliad and The Odyssey, and its very recent avatar, The Lord of the Rings, is simplicity itself. The Ramayana, to its scholars, is a handbook of Truthful Action, or Dharma. This philosophy states that all you have to do is discover who you are, what your duty is and perform it to the letter. To be true to yourself always and to perform your duties to the best of your abilities is the purpose of your current life. The overall goal of your consciousness is the recognition of one’s Self as a manifestation of the Absolute Truth, and thereby you attain Enlightenment, the ultimate Freedom. The story of Rama is older than the Seas. It is the story of a warrior of light, Rama, a truth-seeker, battling the infinite forces of the dark lord Ravana, an embodiment of ignorance. It is the story of the White Wizard, rising from the East, and sweeping across the valley of the shadow of Death with the light of Truth. The story of Ravana is the story of Macbeth, of Darth Vader - a warrior of light fallen to the dark side. Rama as the puny David conquers the looming, lofty Goliath as soon as he recognizes him as his own darkness. There is no judgment in Dharma, no right or wrong, only light and dark, only truth and ignorance. What is true is good; Evil is quite simply ignorance. Whenever you enter a dark room and turn on a lamp to dispel its night, you enact the story of The Ramayana. The ancients, suffering through the cold, dank, frightening and often lethal precariousness of the night, may have soon come to realize the inevitable fact that the Dawn, the triumph of light over darkness, will always follow, and that this cycle, this epic battle, will repeat interminably. This certainty, laced with a healthy dose of doubt, may have been the very beginnings of Faith itself, of Dharma and of all subsequent forms of Religion. Dawn is man’s most powerful and dependable antidote to despair. directed by Allison Arkell Stockman Rama, the prince of Ayodhya...................................................Andreu Honeycutt* Sita, his wife.....................................................................................Heather Haney Lakshman, his brother........................................................................Drew Kopas Bharatha, his brother..............................................................................Ashley Ivey Ravana, the demon King of Lanka......................................................Jim Jorgensen Mandodari, his wife........................................................................Misty Demory* Soorpanakha, his sister.....................................................................Megan Dominy Vibishana, his brother........................................................
