NBTE COMMENDS FED POLY OKO ON
INFRASTRUCTURE
The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has commended the
Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State over infrastructural development
and expressed confidence that the Rector of the institution, Prof. Godwin
Onu has what it takes to sustain the tempo and make the polytechnic envy
of other institutions.
The Executive Secretary of NBTE, Dr. Mas udu Adamu Kazaure in an
interview with POLYNEWS in Abuja also applauded the peace and
tranquility in the polytechnic which he believed contributed to the rapid
transformation of the Federal Polytechnic Oko and enjoined the Staff and
students of the institution to work with the management to make the
school number one in the country.
Assessing the performance of the Board, Kazaure noted that since the
establishment of NBTE in 1974 it has done well in terms of quality control
on Polytechnics, Technical Colleges of Education and other institutions.
According to him, we accredit, review and develop new calendars,
workshops for the institutions and we have done well in this area , adding
that the greatest challenge for the Board is the Higher National Diploma(
HND)/Bachelors Degree (B.Sc) dichotomy which he said has become worse
such that people avoid going for polytechnic education.
Calling for creation of another body for polytechnics, he noted that there
are over 400 institutions under the NBTE made up of about 75 polytechnics,
85 Innovation Centres, 161 Technical Education, 45 vocational enterprises
among others and insisted that the idea of splitting the work load of NBTE
is a welcome one.
Giving support to the creation of Polytechnic Commission to oversee affairs
of polytechnics in the country as their counterpart the Nigeria Universities
Commission does for universities, he applauded the development of
education in the country especially of Polytechnics where technical training
dominates.
There is need to believe in ourselves to be able to do more. Government is
putting in funds the much they can but it is on record that there is no
where in the world where government alone shoulder the responsibility of
the development of education sector. It behooves on the private sector to
appreciate the circumstance and make more in puts. He stated.
He urged Polytechnics in the country to go entrepreneurial in their teaching
and learning, disclosing that NBTE has commenced a project which
recognizes talents even on the streets which he said is geared towards
harnessing talents at the grass root level for future development.
He commended the Rectors of Polytechnics for maintaining law and order
in their environments and noted that some Polytechnics require perimeter
fencing to checkmate the activities of miscreants adding that NBTE is
working towards achieving that.

FED. POLY OKO TRAINS NEW STAFF
WARNS AGAINST CORRUPTION
The Management of the Federal polytechnic Oko, Anambra state has
concluded a two-day orientation programme for her new staff with the
Rector of the Polytechnic, Prof. Godwin Onu warning them against corrupt
practices and indolence.
Onu, who declared the programme open told the new employees that the
polytechnic would not hesitate to send them home if they were indolent,
caught taking bribes or found corrupt in other ways.
Prof. Godwin Onu (Rector)
He said the polytechnic had changed for good and urged the new employees
not to see their jobs as an avenue to make money through extortion and
corruption.
“Reduce your appetite and realize now that the Federal Polytechnic, Oko is
not an oil well. Be contented with your salary. You can make money without
extorting students. When you give in to temptation, one day the Devil will
dig you out. Mark your scripts and give your service unconditionally. By
giving students what they are not worth, you are only destroying them,” the
rector said.
He said the new staff should regard their jobs as a lifeline, which could
catapult them to great heights, if they were dedicated.
He disclosed that more than 20,000 qualified applicants applied for the less
than 300 vacant positions that have just been filled, which according to him
showed how much people were now identifying with the success story of the
Federal Polytechnic Oko.
According to him, “I came in with a dream to see Oko become one of the
best institutions in Nigeria. Since March, 2010, so much has been done to
materialize this dream in the environment, structures, staff welfare,
dedication of staff to duty and the performance of the students”.
He charged the new staff to be part of the success story, adding: “follow the
rules at all times and your mistakes will be minimal”.
Mr. Tony Nwaokolobia (Registrar)
The Registrar of the polytechnic, Mr. Tony Nwaokolobia, said the
orientation was organized to get the new employees to key into the vision
and drive of the polytechnic, and to get them familiar with the their roles as
staff.
He noted that the orientation programme was part of the effort of the present
administration to build capacity for its staff so as to make Oko, the
polytechnic of the moment.
The director of workshops, seminars/Conference of the polytechnic, Mr.
Edwin Chukwuma, said the management has cleansed the system of
corruption and laziness, and he expected the new staff to take note of that as
they start work.
He disclosed that for the past 22 years he has been with the institution, no
management team has organized such orientation programme for newly
employed staff and urged the new staff to use the programme to acquaint
themselves with what is obtainable in the institution.
He extolled the Prof. Onu led management for the high level of
infrastructural development and beautification of the campuses in line with
her vision to bring the Polytechnic to a world class institution.
RECTOR BAGS FELLOWSHIP AWARD
The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State Prof. Godwin
Onu last week bagged the fellowship award of the Institute of Entrepreneurs
of Nigeria.
The award according to the Executive Secretary of the Institute Mr. Rotimi
Oladele was in recognition of the rector’s efforts in entrenching
entrepreneurial studies in the school and adhering strictly to laid down rules
of the institute.
He disclosed that only five persons were chosen through out the country by
the Institute for the award which he said was not accidental but deliberately
to encourage hard work, adding that the Federal Polytechnic Oko has
distinguished itself to have bagged the award.
Left: Executive Secretary, Institute of Entrepreneurs Nigeria, Mr. Rotimi Oladele
conferring on Prof. Godwin Onu (Rector, who was represented by Dr. Don Mmuo, his
Deputy), Fellow of the Institute of Entrepreneurs Nigeria, in Oko, Anambra State
According to him, Federal Polytechnic Oko in the last two years has
distinguished itself in innovation, entrepreneurship and dutifulness
disclosing that for 14 months the institute of Entrepreneurs thoroughly
screened and assessed the tertiary institutions in the country before selecting
the five chief executives of institutions including Onu.
“The assessment was on willingness of the Chief executives to promote the
entrepreneurship drive ….” He noted that the decision to present the awards
at the institutions was for the polytechnic community to appreciate the
efforts of the rector.
Earlier in a courtesy visit on the Rector, Oladele thanked the school for
being responsible and responsive by providing the enabling environment for
entrepreneurial studies to strive.
He commended the School for emerging the best in the zone, stressing that
the director of the centre at Oko made the list of national officers.
He particularly thanked Onu for achieving such feat in the institution, adding
that Oko has all it takes to lead entrepreneurship development in the areas of
manpower and land mark development.
He maintained that entrepreneurship development plays a vital role in the
fight against crime.
After going through the exhibitions of products of the centre, Oladele noted
“we have seen the arrears of your mastery and we will work for the
commercialization of the products”.
The Rector who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Don Muo in his remark
noted that on assumption of office in 2010 his first challenge was the area of
entrepreneurship development.
He added at the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in
connection with the Education Trust Fund (ETF) did direct for training of
lecturers who will in turn inculcate into the students the skills needed to face
the present global economic challenges in the world.

Entrepreneurs, Nigeria at Oko
He noted that after the training of over 70 lecturers to that effect, the first
semester marked the turning point of the lecture series in the area of
entrepreneurship development, stressing “emphasis is now on practical
experience rather than theories as was the case before now”.
According to him, “entrepreneurship courses are compulsory for every
student no matter the discipline, department or school in the institution and
that is why the facilitators and participants are drawn from all the schools
and departments in the polytechnic”.
“More so the entrepreneurship of the institution is currently in partnership
with two foreign institutions; Leicester International College United
Kingdom and Sharda University India”.
In her address, the Southeast zonal Cordinator and Director of the Institute in
the Polytechnic Dr. Ebele Onwuka pointed out the centre was established in
line with the Federal government directives to all institutions of higher
learning in Nigeria to establish special and functional centres for
entrepreneurship development where students will acquire skills that will
enable them to fit into the global nature of the world economy today.
She thanked the school management for providing the enabling environment
and building and equipping the centre with modern and state of the art
facilities for the smooth take off of the practical training.

POLY SEEKS ESTABLISHMENT OF FRENCH
CENTRE
The Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State has sought the establishment
of a French Center in the institution to foster international ties.
The Rector of the polytechnic, Prof. Godwin Onu who disclosed this when
some officials of the French Embassy in Abuja paid him a visit insisted that
the establishment of the centre in the Polytechnic will not only boost the
learning of French language and culture but strengthen ties with both
countries.
He told the French team that the polytechnic is located in the southeast zone
of the Country, which like France is predominantly Christians and peaceful.
Onu recalled that during the Nigerian civil war between 1967 and 1970,
France was among the first countries that recognized Biafra, a feat he said
that endeared France in the hearts of the Igbos, adding that the Igbos see
France as part of them because of the help they offered in their difficult time.
“We see you as our brothers and will not hesitate in deepening the
relationship and the affinity. This French Centre will open a new frontier in
the institution’s quest to be the number one in the country as we are going
beyond borders in our bid to remain the Polytechnic of the moment. We
have signed memorandum of understanding with some foreign universities
in China and the United Kingdom in areas of research and exchange
programme”.
Onu presenting copies of the Poly News, (the polytechnic in house
journal) to the Project Officer at French Embassy Abuja, Carl Engelsen
while the Assistant Director of the French Centre Enugu, Julian
Martinet looks on
“We look forward to the establishment of the French Language and Cultural
Centre and we welcome every step and process to actualize it to deepen the
affinity between Nigeria and France”. Onu stated.
Responding the French Project Officer at the Embassy, Carl Engelsen and
the Assistant Director of the French Centre Enugu, Julien Martinet thanked
the management of the Federal polytechnic Oko for the hospitality, adding
that the visit was very important.

“FIGHT AGAINST POVERTY,
UNEMPLOYMENT WILL FAIL”
The Director General Energy Commission of Nigeria, Prof. Abubakar
Sambo has said the fight against poverty and unemployment in the country
will come to naught without the provision of modern improved energy
services in the country.
Sambo who spoke at the inaugural research training programme yesterday
organized by Petroleum/Coal and Renewable Energy Research Unit of the
Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State was represented by a Director in
the commission Dr. Obiorah Dioha.
He maintained that renewable energy can contribute to poverty alleviation
and assist in addressing the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) by
providing modern improved energy services to the poor, disclosing that
renewable was particularly suited to meet the decentralized energy needs of
poor rural remote community institutions.
From left: Prof. Joseph Dioha (Rep. DG, Energy Commission of
Nigeria), Dr. Don Mmuo (Deputy Rector), and Dr. Mchivga Abelega
(Deputy Director, Academic Programmes, National Commission for
Colleges of Education, Abuja at the workshop
According to him, “this is particularly true of small scale renewables that are
made locally and run on locally available resources. Such systems can
provide energy that is both affordable and a source of employment and
enterprise creation for both and urban poor”.
“To achieve this, professionals with broad training and understanding of
renewable energy production, delivery, consumption, efficiency, economics
policy and regulations are needed. Unfortunately, Nigeria is faced with two
inter-twined problems: a situation of mass unemployment of relatively
skilled man power produced through formal and informal educational
system and lack of man power in energy related fields”. He pointed out.
He particularly commended the Federal Polytechnic Oko for rising up to
address the problem and sharing in the mandate of the Energy Commission
of Nigeria to promote training and man power development in the energy
sector of the country.
The Rector of the Polytechnic, Prof. Godwin Onu who was represented by
his Deputy, Dr. Don Muo in a keynote address congratulated the Research
unit of the institution for the laudable stride in the collective academic
endeavour and urged them to sustain the tempo.
From left : Prof. Eboatu, (Fmr DVC, Unizik), Prof. Joseph Dioha (Rep.
DG, Energy Commission of Nigeria), Dr. Don Mmuo (Deputy Rector),
and Tony Nwaokolobia (Registrar) at the workshop
He emphasized the role of research in education and praised the timing and
aptness of the workshop and the theme: excelling in training renewable
energy human resource base.
He expressed worry that a lot of people were groping in the dark by wasting
so much money on diesel and fuel for generation of power and at the same
time polluting the environment, causing global warming as a result of the
emission of carbon not knowing that greater power could be generated by
alternative energy sources devoid of pollution.
The Director of the Research unit, Mrs. Awuzie Chioma in an address noted
that the workshop was geared towards ‘training, upskilling and updating the
polytechnic community on this new technology’ which is alternative energy.
Mrs Chioma Awuzie, Director, PECREER Unit
According to her, “my vision is to make this unit a leading institute in
renewable energy science and engineering which will provide the foundation
for innovation in efficient and low cost renewable energy technologies”
adding that the unit will continue to train and upskill renewable energy
human resource base”.
She therefore called for the establishment of a renewable energy centre in
the Federal polytechnic Oko as was done in six universities in the country
bearing in mind that polytechnics are technically based and practical
oriented, adding that Oko is the only polytechnic in Nigeria that has a
renewable energy unit.
TALE OF TWO CULTURES AT FED. POLY
OKO
It was a tale of two cultures at the Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State
when the institution consolidated on its International Cultural exchange
programme hosting Xiamen University of China cultural troupe.
The event which attracted many dignitaries including the former Vice
President Alex Ekwueme, many traditional rulers and academics held both
the visiting Chinese troupe and hosting members of the polytechnic
community spell bound for several hours while the cultural displays lasted.
The Chinese troupe that opened the floor with Chinese Traditional
instruments followed by an Opera Dance titled Qiao Huadan (Vivacious
Ladies) marveled at the hospitality of the Polytechnic.
One of the traditional displays by the Chinese troupe that shook the
convocation arena venue of the cultural exchange was an ethnic dance to
portray Chinese multi ethnic background titled “Bamboo Grove in the
Rain”.
But when the Igbo traditional Mkpokiti took the stage the ovation became
thunderous especially from the Chinese troupe who besieged the dancers in
the arena clapping, cheering and videoing the acrobatic display by the
mkpokiti dancers.
This particular cultural troupe it was gathered has brought many
international laurels to Nigeria on many occasions including representing the
African continent during to the last women conference in China.

Welcoming the foreign visitors earlier before the cultural displays, the
Rector of the Polytechnic, Prof. Godwin Onu who was represented by the
Deputy Rector, Dr. Don Muo said that the polytechnic was very committed
in international cooperation of which this visit will help consolidate.
He noted that the Polytechnic has commenced the construction of Confucius
centre which will house the Confucius Institute for the training of students
studying Chinese language, culture and technology.
He stressed that The Federal Polytechnic Oko is ready to tap from the
experiences and developmental strides of China in its effort to fast track
intellectual and technological transformations.
He equally commended the management of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University
(NAU) Awka for partnering with the institution especially in both academic
and other areas of positive developments.
Onu informed that some members of the polytechnic community were
recently sent to China for various trainings, who will in turn teach other
students studying at the Confucius centre in Oko, adding that the
Polytechnic has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with about
three other foreign institutions on research and exchange programme.
Expressing gratitude for the cooperation between the Confucius centre and
the Polytechnic, the National Director of Confucius institute in Nigeria and
Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) Academics, NAU Prof. J.E Ahaneku said
the Federal Polytechnic Oko has distinguished itself especially in creating
the enabling environment for learning.

The exhibition which came at the end of the cultural display excited the
Chinese visitors.
RECTOR TASKS SECONDARY SCHOOL
STUDENTS ON HUMILITY
The Rector, Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State Prof. Godwin Onu
yesterday tasked students of secondary schools on humility and
commitment, saying that lack of such values could derail them from
actualizing their potentials.
Onu reminded the Students of St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Umuona,
Aguata local government of Anambra State when they paid him a visit, that
they are the leaders of tomorrow and should not misuse the opportunity they
have to study.
The Rector thanked the staff of the school for embarking on the excursion
programme especially for selecting the polytechnic, adding that most of the
students would be undergraduates of the polytechnic in the nearest future.
He noted that their presence in the polytechnic would motivate them to study
and further their education based on the interactions with the undergraduates
of the polytechnic but insisted that without humility their desire to further
their studies could derail.
Left: Dr. Kanayo Enekwechi (Director, Works and Services), Prof. Godwin Onu
(Rector,) addressing students of St. Joseph's High School Umuona who were on
excursion visit to the Polytechnic.
According to him, “you can only further your studies by being humble.
Obey your parents and teachers and do your assignments. strive to read your
books and pass your examinations because you know you have some where
to go. Do not while away your time because if you do you will get lost and
miss your potentials”.
“But importantly be humble. Respect and obey your parents and teachers.
They may be hard on you today but they will not mislead you as they are
only preparing you as leaders of tomorrow. Be prayerful to God for giving
you life and ask God to guide you until you achieve what you want to be in
life”. The rector admonished.
He reminded them that lack of money or disability should not deter any one
from fulfilling his ambition in life and told them of a blind student who won
the best student award in the university even as he reminded them that
President Goodluck Jonathan had no shoes when he was a student like them.
“Be patient, honest and sincere in whatever you do. if you jump more than
your shadow, you will jump into trouble. Avoid violence and evil. Grow up
with the best intention of being of good character and not to harass or
intimidate your peers. Keep your environment clean at all time. Silver and
gold we have not but this advice is more than them”. Onu advised.
Responding, the proprietor of the secondary school, Mr. Joseph Okonkwo
thanked the Rector and other members of the polytechnic management for
availing them the opportunity and making out time to talk to the young
students.
Prof. Godwin Onu (Rector, Right) and Dr. Don Mmuo (Deputy Rector, left) pose for
a group photograph with students of St. Joseph's High School Umuona who were on
excursion visit to the Polytechnic.
He commended the Polytechnic for both the intellectual and infrastructural
development which the present administration has put in place at the
polytechnic and urged them not to relent in the strive for the polytechnic to
be uplifted to a polytechnic status.
ASUP SEEKS QUALITY REPRESENTATION
IN INSTITUTIONS’ COUNCIL
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has called for quality
representation among members of Governing Councils of Polytechnics
insisting that only the appointment of academics into such body is the only
panacea to the rot in the education sector.
The National president of ASUP, Comrade Chibuzor Asomugha who stated
this at the Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State after receiving a brand
new car to facilitate his new position from the Rector of the Polytechnic,
Prof. Godwin Onu lamented that the appointment of politicians into the
governing councils as a of political compensations has hampered the
progress of the institutions’ manpower and structural facilities.

Polytechnic (ASUP) Comrade Chibuzor Asomugha
He charged the federal government to ensure that more academics who
appreciate the challenges in the education sector were appointed into such
Offices, adding that their appointment would reposition polytechnics in the
country.
According to him, “you need somebody who share the same vision with you
and who has your interest at heart to move forward. Other people can still
make meaningful impact in other sectors but education requires people who
have passion for its speedy development”.
Asomugha decried what he termed the widening dichotomy that exists
between Staff of tertiary institutions, adding that such dichotomy
demoralizes both staff and students of polytechnics.
He urged the federal government to channel more funds into training
institutions tasked with the development of self-employable manpower like
polytechnics, adding that it will reduce unemployment in the country.
He thanked the management of the polytechnic for the magnanimity which
he described as “extending the hands of camaraderie to the National body of
ASUP” adding that ASUP will always champion the cause of Polytechnics
development in both the local and national levels.
Responding, the Rector, Prof. Onu said the management of the Federal
Polytechnic Oko is labour friendly, which he said has reflected in the
policies of his administration.
He noted that the successes recorded by his administration were as a result
of the support and cooperation of the staff and students of the polytechnic.
He maintained that his administration was averse to crisis and noted that
with dialogue and collective efforts the institution will continue to grow.
He promised to put an enabling platform where any outstanding labour
matters would be resolved amicably.
Onu commended the polytechnic’s chapter of ASUP for winning the
National presidency, promising that the polytechnic has become a model
institution in labour matters across the nation.
Thanking the school management for identifying with the National body, the
Chapter Chairman, Dr. Onyeka Uwakwe called on the management to
facilitate the resolution of any lingering matter with labour, advising that the
school should be the cynosure for other institution in labour related matters.

to the polytechnic on a courtesy call recently said the donation was a way of
identifying with the institution that trained them, adding that the present
management led by Prof. Godwin Onu has created an enabling environment
for people with genuine interest in the development of the polytechnic to key
into.
Nzeh who represented the National President of the association, Sir Uchenna
Udensi, lauded the efforts of the Rector in turning Federal Polytechnic Oko
into a Polytechnic of the Moment where a culture of learning and teaching

He added that the association was pleased with Onu’s effort in adopting an
all round development of the polytechnic and urged him not to relent.
Among the items presented were 35 giant waste bins and 300 pieces of
plastic gate pass for motor vehicles.
The items especially the waste bins according to the alumni association was
to complement the management’s efforts in the beautification and physical
aesthetics of the polytechnic and noted that students have already keyed into
the programme by keeping a clean environment.
On the other hand, the gate pass he explained will help monitor vehicular
movement in and out of the polytechnic, though he noted that no case of
missing vehicle has been reported in the institution.
Speaking, Prof Onu, commended efforts of the alumni association for
identifying with the polytechnic and expressed satisfaction that the efforts of
the management in sanitizing the institution were yielding desired fruit.
According to him, “we appreciate the kind gesture in identifying with us. As
you rightly observed the institution is headed towards perfection which as a
result of the Management effort in clinically creating a serene and clean
environment with unpolluted air that smells pure academics for our students
and staff”.
He recalled that the Polytechnic alumni in California has indicated interest
when they paid a courtesy visit to partner with the polytechnic, priding that
people are beginning to have confidence and pride in identifying with
Federal Polytechnic Oko unlike in the past when people hated to be
associated with the school.
“We want other stakeholders to emulate such exhibition of patriotism by
doing what is within their limits to improve facilities here. We have a vision
to become the best Polytechnic in the country and that had reflected in our
on-going infrastructural projects dotting all around our campuses” Onu
revealed.

He urged the association to take a message of peace everywhere they go as
there was no alternative to it, adding that the success recorded by his
administration would not have been possible without the peace which the
polytechnic enjoys.
“We have a collective responsibility to sustain peace and the enabling
environment”. Onu said and urged to continue identifying with the
polytechnic.
ONU BAGS OUTSTANDING RECTOR OF THE
YEAR AWARD
The Rector, Federal Polytechnic Oko Anambra state, Prof. Godwin Onu has
been awarded the most outstanding Rector of Polytechnic award for the year
2011 from the League of Democratic Students (LEADS).
The award according to the National President of LEADS, Comrade
Ochekwu Morgan “was in recognition of his unequalled interest in students
and staff welfare, passion for development, funds-attraction/raising acumen,
assisting the less-privileged in the society and student/youth empowerment”
In a speech before the presentation of the award, Ochekwu said, “what
seems to be most phenomenal about our recipient is his unequalled regards,
reception, care and compassion for everyone who comes his way at all times
either seeking assistance or mentorship or on official grounds-always eager
to assist”.

presenting the most outstanding Rector of Polytechnic award for the
year 2011 to Onu.
He noted that Onu was sincerely committed to nation building through
“qualitative teaching, learning and research, innovation of new pertinent
programmes and acquisition of equipment and infrastructural development”.
Ochekwu pointed out “the progress recorded in the Federal Polytechnic Oko
since the present management led by Prof. Godwin Onu came on board is as
outstanding as it is remarkable”, adding, “while his contemporaries may be
busy cogitating on how to manage and sustain their present programmes,
Federal polytechnic Oko is already breaking new grounds with programmes
that are both of strategic and comparative advantage to the development of
manpower requisite for the socio-economic progress of Nigeria”.
He lauded the polytechnic for introducing the study of Chinese language,
which he said will cement the economic advantage for both countries and
called for the upgrading the status of the polytechnic to a University of
science and technology.
In his response, Onu who was flanked by members of his management team
expressed appreciation to the group for recognizing their strides in uplifting
the education standard of the polytechnic.
He said that without the cooperation of the members of the team the
successes recorded by his administration would not have been possible,
adding that on his assumption of office in 2010 the school was faced with
many challenges which with the help of God the team of the School
management has been able to tackle to some extent.
Onu maintained that his aspiration was to make the Federal Polytechnic Oko
the number one in the country and a polytechnic to reckon with in the world
which he said informed the zeal with which the school was moving forward
despite the paucity of funds.
“We are keen on innovation and changing the face of the institution. Our
dream is to have a perfect environment for teaching and learning. We are
working today for tomorrow. We have to curb indiscipline and cultism for
the enabling environment we need. We are building the biggest library in the
entire southeast zone of Nigeria which will boost the reading culture of our
students”. Onu said.

the polytechnic since the Rector took the helms of affairs has by far
transformed more than what was obtainable before especially because of the
holistic approach of the Rector.
PANIC AS LANDSLIDE RAVAGES ANAMBRA
COMMUNITIES
----Residents send SOS to Governments, World bank
Indigenes of Oko and Nanka communities both in Orumba North Local
Government Area of Anambra state have sent a Save Our Souls (SOS) to
both State, Federal Government and the World bank following a landslide
that rendered some members of the two communities homeless.
The landslide, which occurred last weekend around 8.00am it was gathered
further wreaked more havoc on the communities already ravaged by gully
erosion.
Oko is the hometown of former Vice president of Nigeria, Dr. Alex
Ekwueme while Nanka is the hometown of former Minister of Information
and Director General National Agency for Food and Drug Administration
Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Dora Akunyili.
The erosion which had reportedly claimed many lives and destroyed
property estimated at billions of Naira, according to residents of the
communities including the students of the Federal Polytechnic Oko took a
more dangerous dimension at the weekend when without any rain or seismic
signs the landslide cut the major drainage that has controlled the gully
erosion in the two community.
The landslide
As a result, residents around the area where the landslide occurred out of
panic fled to other parts of the communities but when by Monday nothing
happened again they returned to pack out their properties.
When reporters visited the area on Tuesday, the residents who were packing
out besieged them wailing and called on the government and the World
Bank to come to their aids.
The traditional ruler of Oko, Prof. Laz Ekwueme, in an interview with
reporters decried the menace of the landslide and erosion in his community
and called on the World bank to come to their assistance.
He disclosed that the contract for the control of the erosion which probably
triggered the landslide has been awarded for a very long time but was
abandoned for no known reasons and decried a situation where government
play politics with such important projects that will affect the lives of the
citizenry.
According to him, if the menace was not checked before the rainy season,
many buildings will be eroded including his ancestral home because the
abandoned drainage project that has been controlling the erosion has been
cut off by the landslide.
One of the victims whose house stands less than two metres away from the
landslide site Mr. Martin Ezeofor said he has been forced to move his family
to a safer place, adding that it was only a tree that hears that it will be cut
down and stands.
He appealed to the Federal government to come to their aids before the
entire communities were washed away.
He recalled that the menace of erosion has plagued the communities and the
environs including Ekwulobia and Amaokpala for more than a century
without any efforts by the government to address the issue.
Other residents who spoke to reporters at the landslide site were Ichie
Barnabas Nwafor, Bomboy Onyeagba, Cyprian Ezeokeke, Joseph
Ibeakamma, Hilary Ezeofor and Nneka Ezeokeke.
Victims recounting their ordeal
They all decried the devastating effect of the landslide, adding that the
cutting of the drainage will trigger off more menacing landslides once the
rains start which they said informed the evacuation of people and property
within the area.
The residents lamented the loss of lives to the menace in the past and that of
buildings and large expanse of farm lands in the recent time and called on
the Federal Government and environmental protection bodies to come to
their rescue.
Also speaking, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Polytechic Oko
which its Extension site was being ravaged by the erosion, Mr. Obini
Onuchukwu noted that the students of the institution were also affected by
the landslide.
He said that some of the students who live outside the campus had relocated
because of the menace, adding that the extension site of the polytechnic was
being ravaged by the same menace.
Onuchukwu urged the relevant authorities responsible for tackling
environmental challenges to intervene as quickly as possible to avert further
disaster.

SABBATICAL LEAVE
Amah Out, Asoegwu in
Management of the Polytechnic has approved the release Amah Ferdinand
E. of the department of Quantity Surveying Department for one year
sabbatical leave in Federal College of Education (Technical), Umunze. In a
letter to Amah which was signed by A.O. Umeozor, the Deputy Registrar in
charge of Personnel, Management reminded him of his promise to always
cover his duties while on sabbatical leave. “Please, note your promise to
always cover your duties while on Sabbatical leave”, the letter said.
In a similar development, Management has approved the request for one
year sabbatical leave in the polytechnic made by Dr. Asoegwu M.N.N.
Following Management’s approval of his request, he has been placed on
CONTISS 15 as Chief Lecturer in the Department of Accountancy, School
of Financial Studies with effect from the day he assumes duty. His approval
letter states, “Please, report at the Personnel Unit upon receipt of this letter
for necessary documentation”.
MGT DIRECTS STAFF TO REFUND MONEY
Two staff of the polytechnic who were sponsored to an International
Conference but could not attend the conference have been asked to refund
the money. The staff include:
Mrs G.U. Anene (Department of Natural Science)
Management acknowledged receipt of your response to the query issued to
you on the above subject.
It frowned at your response which was totally unaccepted. Management was
of the view that you ought to have declared your intention of not attending
the conference rather than taking your own personal decision which was
contrary to the extant regulations. Presentation of papers by proxy was not
approved for you.
Your act therefore amounted to serious misconduct which may attract severe
disciplinary action.
In view of the above, I am directed to ask you to refund to the polytechnic
the total sum of one hundred and seventy-seven thousand, five hundred naira
(N177,500) which you were paid despite paying conference fee by proxy.
You are by this letter informed accordingly.
You were further directed to imbibe the principle of due process knowing
full well that the Rector is the final step in the administrative ladder, and not
the preliminary step. The Registrar takes the preliminary processes and
recommends to the Rector.
You are also warned in view of the consequences of your actions not to
indulge in any of such similar act as a repeat occurrence may attract a more
severe disciplinary action…
Nzekwe Regina Ujunwa (SERVICOM Unit)
Refer to the query issued to you on the above subject and your responses in
your letter dated 4th November, 2011. Be informed that Management has
looked into your various representations on the matter, and was not satisfied
with your explanations.
Management viewed that you were not serious after giving you such a
golden opportunity to update your knowledge. You should recall that
presentation of conference paper by proxy was not the initial arrangement,
and therefore not accepted by Management. Should anything have prevented
you from attending the conference after the necessary arrangement, you
were expected to inform your employer who made such approval for you.
You ought not to have made your personal arrangements, bearing in mind
that you are a subordinate officer.
Against this backdrop, I am directed to ask you to refund a total sum of one
hundred and ninety-two thousand naira (N192,000) which you were paid to
attend the conference.
I am further directed to warn you to desist from such acts which may put
your image and that of the polytechnic in the dark, as a repeat of any of
similar act(s) may attract you a severe disciplinary action…
Would you like to reach the Rector on any issue
of concern to the Institution?

OVER 120 STUDENTS EXPELLED
CERTIFICATE FORGERY
FOR
In a sustained fight against corruption and related practices, Management of
the Federal Polytechnic, Oko has expelled over 120 students for allegedly
being in possession of fake academic credentials.
The phony documents include National Diploma certificates and O’level
certificates. The forged credentials were used to either secure admission into
National Diploma or Higher National Diploma programmes as it applied.
Some others who were also expelled were indicted by Exam Misconduct
Panel.
Reacting to the development, Rector of the institution, Prof. Godwin Onu
vowed to continue the crusade against corruption. He said his administration
has zero tolerance for corruption and lousiness and would stop at nothing to
maintain the high level of discipline and sanity already existing in the
polytechnic. Continuing, “We will not allow a few bad eggs to re-establish
the old order again”, Onu said. On the list include:
