Guest Speaker: Dr. Terrence L. Chambers, Ph.D., P.E.
Dr. Chambers is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and the
Director of the UL Lafayette Solar Technology Applied Research and Testing
(START) Lab at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He currently holds the
Board of Regents Endowed Professorship in Advanced Computer-Aided
Manufacturing. His research interests include alternative energy, optimization,
artificial intelligence, and virtual reality. He is the author of numerous technical
and pedagogical papers, and has been awarded roughly three million dollars in
Forward to a Friend
externally funded research grants. Along with numerous grants from industry
and state agencies, federal grants have been obtained from NSF, DOE, NASA,
and the Department of Education. He is a registered Professional Engineer in
the state of Louisiana.
Topic: “An Introduction to Solar Thermal Power Production”
In this presentation Dr. Chambers will give an overview of the solar energyrelated research being performed at the UL Lafayette Solar Technology
Applied Research and Testing (START) Lab, located in Crowley, Louisiana.
Funded by the DOE, the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, and
Cleco Power, LLC, the START Lab features the very first fully operational
university-owned solar thermal power plant in the United States, and the first
solar thermal power plant in Louisiana. An introduction to the basic principles
of solar thermal power will be presented, along with a description of the
features of the existing solar thermal power plant and the services available to
industry. Future directions for the solar industry, and opportunities for
Louisiana to participate in the solar energy business will be discussed.

Section Sponsors Table Top Program
The ISA Lafayette Section is excited to introduce a new program for our section
sponsors. Beginning with the September lunch meeting, we will be inviting 5-6
section sponsors to display their products before, during and after the meeting.
The monthly newsletter will include your company name as a participant. This
“mini-table top” will allow you, as a participant, to show off new products, have
information available for prospective clients, or just take the opportunity to
socialize with luncheon attendees. All at no additional cost !
For various reasons, attendance and participation at our yearly Go-Tech Expo
and Luncheon at the Cajundome has been suffering. That function takes a lot
of planning and expense for the section to produce and for the participating
exhibitors. We feel that our loyal exhibitors are not getting the most for their
time and money, and for that reason, we are not planning the Expo for 2014.
As a Section Sponsor, you are helping out your ISA Lafayette Section with
operating capital to fund scholarships and other activities during the year. Your
Section Sponsorship of $150.00 / year also includes:



Presidents Note
During the past week, the Section donations to the three local FIRST Robotics
teams were delivered. The three teams are approaching the end of the “build
season” - the robots must be “bagged and tagged” no later than midnight on
Mardi Gras day. No additional work can be done to the robots between “bag
and tag” and the initial competition. I understand this is the second year in a
row when “bag and tag” is on Mardi Gras – the schedule is obviously not
developed locally!! I want to wish each of the teams the best of luck as they
progress through the competitions. The teams and primary contacts are:



Team 3616, Comeaux High School, Ms. Lisa Ranney –
lranney2@cox.net
Team 4336, Acadiana High School, Ms. Suzanne Prince –
sdprince@lpssonline.com
Team 4353, David Thibodaux STEM Magnet Academy, Ms. Reva
Dear – rdear1@me.com
Please consider donating time and expertise as a team mentor and/or
supporter. The teams can always use additional help. “Expertise” doesn’t
necessarily imply technical expertise – arranging transportation and lodging for
the competitions, coordinating food and drinks during the build season and
competitions, participating in team fund-raising activities, general administrative
assistance for the coordinators, attending the competitions and cheering the
teams on, setting up team demonstrations and other events, etc., are all
necessary functions that you can help with.
The ULL IEEE Robotics team has been busy preparing for competition also.
Their task this year is to build a robotic vehicle to navigate through a maze –
autonomously. Obviously, the robotic vehicle must be capable of learning and
remembering the maze configuration and adjusting its route on-the-fly to be
successful. That’s not an easy task for a human so it really is quite a challenge.
We will present the ULL team its donation in the very near future, hopefully at
the February meeting.
As a reminder, it is our annual Clay Shoot fund-raiser that allows us to support
these activities. The date is April 18th at Ed’s Sporting Goods in Kaplan. We
appreciate the past support of everyone and we are looking forward to another
successful event. Breakfast will be provided by Pro-Tek Field Services and
once again lunch will be provided by CED-Lafayette. Please take a moment to
thank Rod Viator and Eddie Cormier for their continued support. Section
Sponsors receive a $100 discount for the initial team and all shooters will
receive a tee shirt. Please visit our web site, www.isa-lafayette.org, to see all
the ways you can participate in the Clay Shoot and help support the next
generation of automation professionals.
Thank you for all your support and we look forward to seeing you April 18 th!!
