Tutor Training Programme for 2009/2010 including Application Forms ABOUT SPORTS LEADERS UK Sports Leaders UK believes that everyone has the potential to make a meaningful contribution to their local community – but not everyone has the opportunity. Our leadership qualifications and awards use the media of sport, dance, basic expedition skills and other curriculum areas to help people develop essential life skills. The skills to be able to organise, motivate and communicate with others are essential in all aspects of working life today. The nature of these courses encourages candidates to learn through practical experiences, rather than through written work. Sports Leaders UK qualifications and awards can be delivered in a variety of educational and community settings. In order to help organisations deliver the Sports Leaders UK qualifications, Tutor Training days are held at a number of different locations around the UK. These one-day programmes provide information and ideas to aid the understanding and delivery of the qualifications. The Tutor Training day gives new tutors the opportunity to gain an insight into the content, assessment and administration procedures of the qualifications that are most relevant to them. It is also an opportunity for experienced tutors to gain new examples of good practice, and share their own experiences. Every Tutor Training day consists of a core timetable (SL and CSL) of different workshops, briefings and seminars delivered through theory and practically based sessions. In addition a number of strands (HSL, DL, Refresher) are offered at different venues. A key aim is to inspire and motivate tutors to embark upon the delivery of a Sports Leaders UK qualification. KEY FACTS Attendance at a Tutor Training day does not qualify or accredit anyone to deliver leadership courses. The training is one part of the overall quality assurance process that is carried out to enable centres to deliver Sports Leaders UK qualifications. To comply with the quality assurance procedures, each centre must have a minimum of one tutor trained (see diagram for the rest of the criteria). Step 1 Purchase a Tutor Resource Pack (TRP) Step 4 Minimum of one personnel on training www.sportsleaders.org Step 2 Apply to become an Approved Assessment Centre (AAC) Step 3 Tutor Accreditation visit – assessment procedure and staff accreditation 1 What type of Tutor Training is required? Start at Question 1 and follow the arrows by answering Yes/No/Don’t Know. Then answer Question 2. 1 No Does your organisation have a Trained Tutor? (A Trained Tutor is a person that has attended Sports Leaders UK Tutor Training.) Don’t Know Yes A member of your organisation must attend a Tutor Training day at the earliest convenience. However, we understand that they may not be able to attend training before the course commences. Ring Sports Leaders UK Headquarters on 01908 689 180. Is this person’s training due to expire? (Training expires after three years.) No Yes For the time being there is no requirement for any further Tutor Training. There are two options: The Trained Tutor either needs to attend Refresher Training, or a new member of the organisation should become a Trained Tutor. Refresher – This is a half day training for experienced tutors. This can be attended if a Trained Tutor status is due to expire, and there is no-one else in the centre that has been trained. 2 Does your organisation require any HSL/ Dance/BEL Refresher Tutor Training? Level 3 Award in Higher Sports Leadership (HSL) – This is a half day training to enable delivery of this qualification. Yes Level 1 Award in Dance Leadership (DL) – If your organisation has a Trained Tutor for the Level 1 in Dance Leadership, and has relevant dance qualifications or knowledge, they can deliver this qualification. Brand new tutors can attend this training day. Level 2 Award in Basic Expedition Leadership (BEL) training opportunities. A full day training for tutors wishing to deliver this qualification. All BEL tutors must have their summer Mountain Leader qualification. No For the time being there is no requirement for any further Tutor Training. NB. A minimum of one member of your organisation needs to attend Tutor Training once every three years. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What background should a prospective tutor have? Tutors should hold qualifications similar to the following: recognised Physical Education qualification • AA DCSF Governing Body of Sport coaching qualification • A National Home Office armed/public service qualification in Sport or Physical Education • A Sports Development • A Youth and Communityqualification degree/diploma • A recognised dance qualification. • Any person wishing to tutor a Sports Leaders UK qualification/award holding qualifications other than the ones outlined above should contact Sports Leaders UK. 2 www.sportsleaders.org FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Who needs to be trained? Sports Leaders UK believes that it is good practice for everyone who delivers a Sports Leaders UK qualification to attend Tutor Training in order to enhance their delivery, ensure quality assurance procedures are understood, and to provide tutors with examples of good practice. However, we understand that it may not be feasible to release every member of the organisation. Therefore, the criteria for a centre to be accredited to deliver the qualifications is for a minimum of one tutor within the Approved Assessment Centre (AAC) to attend training at the relevant level. Training a minimum of one person within the centre is required for each qualification level that the AAC wishes to deliver. For example if a centre wants to deliver a Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership and a Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership, the AAC will require a person to attend training for each level of qualification. This could be the same person who has been trained for both levels or two different tutors. (NB. All tutors wishing to deliver the Level 2 Award in Basic Expedition Leadership must attend specific training for that qualification.) Once the person has received training for the required level they become known within the centre as a Trained Tutor, and part of their role is to disseminate the information gained at training to any colleagues that also wish to tutor on the leadership qualification at that level. How to become an accredited Tutor/Assessor? Attending Tutor Training does not qualify a tutor to assess the leadership qualifications. Anyone who wishes to assess a Sports Leaders UK leadership qualification (trained or untrained), will need to be accredited by a Sports Leaders UK External Verifier. This can be arranged when applying for your first course, or by contacting Sports Leaders UK headquarters. Once a member of the organisation has been accredited they will be known within the centre as a Tutor/Assessor, and will be able to make assessment decisions on the candidates. If a member of the organisation whether trained or not has not been accredited, they cannot assess and can only tutor on a course (for examples see illustration below). If more information is required on accreditation and tutoring courses visit www.sportsleaders.org. Who can tutor? Who can assess? Below are the staff of a centre who are delivering the Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership. (NB. Each level of qualification requires specific training.) Paul Status: Trained and accredited Tutor/Assessor Paul has attended Tutor Training for the Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership, and has also had an accreditation visit by a Sports Leaders UK External Verifier. Role: Paul tutors and assesses candidates on the Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership. Sadie Status: Accredited Tutor/Assessor Sadie has not attended Tutor Training and does not need to as Paul has disseminated all the information required to her. Sadie has gained a working knowledge of what is required to teach the qualification. Sadie was present at the accreditation visit with the Sports Leaders UK External Verifier and has been accredited as a Tutor/Assessor. Role: Sadie tutors and assesses candidates on the Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership. Jane Status: Tutor Jane has helped deliver parts of the Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership under the guidance of Paul and Sadie. Jane has not attended Tutor Training, or been accredited by Sports Leaders UK. Role: Jane cannot make assessment decisions on any of the candidates – this must be carried out by Paul and Sadie only. She can assist in tutoring the course. Vijay Status: Trained Tutor Vijay has attended a Tutor Training day and is helping to deliver parts of the Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership under the guidance of Paul and Sadie. Vijay has not been accredited by a Sports Leaders UK External Verifier. Role: Vijay cannot make assessment decisions for any of the candidates, this must be carried out by Paul and Sadie only. He can assist in tutoring the course. www.sportsleaders.org 3 When to start running your leadership course? A leadership course can commence prior to a member of the organisation attending a Tutor Training day, as long as that person is booked onto one of the Tutor Training days within a reasonable timescale. However, delivery of a Sports Leaders UK qualification cannot commence until the organisation is a registered AAC and the Tutors/Assessors have been accredited. For more information on this, visit www.sportsleaders.org or contact Sports Leaders UK headquarters. How often does a tutor from a centre need to attend Tutor Training? An AAC must send a member of the organisation to attend Tutor Training once every three years. This may be the experienced tutor who can attend a half day Refresher strand. However, the centre may send another person to become the Trained Tutor, possibly due to changes in staffing during the lifespan of the AAC. This person would attend a briefing for a specific qualification, for example a Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership, or a Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership. What is required for the day? • • • Both full and half day workshops include a mixture of theory based and practical activities, so appropriate dress is required. There is no need to bring a Tutor Resource Pack, although when attending the Refresher strand a request may be made to bring examples of work and good practice to share with other practitioners. A pen and notepad are advisable. It is not necessary to bring refreshments as lunch is provided for delegates attending full day courses. How much does it cost? Full Day – £170.00 Half Day (Refresher strand or HSL strand) – £85.00 BEL Full Day – £90.00 WHAT SHOULD BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO ATTENDING A TUTOR TRAINING DAY? Step 1 Information Gathering Read the information about the available qualifications and awards to see which one is most appropriate for your candidates. Discuss this with your colleagues. 4 Step 2 Purchase/ locate a Tutor Resource Pack (TRP) The TRP is available by downloading an order form at www. sportsleaders.org. Read the TRP and become familiar with the qualification. Then discuss with members of the organisation what the qualification should achieve. Discuss the recruiting process and how it fits with what is already offered at the centre, and the budgetary implications. Step 3 Apply – AAC and Course From the information gathered, apply to become an AAC for the qualifications the centre will deliver, and apply for the first course. Contact Sports Leaders UK headquarters on 01908 689 180 for information, or visit www.sportsleaders. org. If necessary a support visit from a Sports Leaders UK Regional Manager can be arranged to help with these processes. Step 4 Accreditation Visit When the AAC and first course applications have been submitted, a Sports Leaders UK External Verifier will contact the centre to arrange a date and time for the accreditation visit. A centre must be accredited to be able to run Sports Leaders UK qualifications. Everyone wishing to be involved in the tutoring and assessing of candidates must also be present at this visit to be accredited to assess the candidates. www.sportsleaders.org Step 5 Tutor Training Each AAC must have a minimum of one tutor who has been trained at the appropriate level to be able to deliver the qualifications. For example, to run the Level 3 Award in Higher Sports Leadership, the tutor has to have attended a Level 3 Award in Higher Sports Leadership strand. If the centre requires a Trained Tutor, complete the necessary Tutor Training Application Form, or book online. Please read the following information to select and book onto the appropriate Tutor Training day.
