Breakout Sessions 1 and 2 July 12 – Session 1; 10:20 a.m. to 11:50 a.m.; Session 2; 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Asthma At the conclusion of this session participants should be able to explain at least 3 causes and 3 symptoms of asthma and describe the four components in managing asthma. Participants will also be able to describe the use of an asthma action plan in managing asthma. Food Allergies and Epinephrine At the conclusion of this session participants should be able to list the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and verbalize the steps to administer an epinephrine auto injector. They will also be able to discuss use of an emergency care plan in response to a student’s health emergency. Diabetes – Basics, Level 1 At the conclusion of this session participants should be able to describe the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes and the differences in care in the school system. They should also be able to describe the proper treatment for both hypo/hyperglycemia in the school setting and verbalize various resources available to assist in the care of diabetes in the school setting including care plans. Diabetes – Advanced, Levels 2 and 3 At the conclusion of this session participants should be able to list available resources for assistance with carb counting in the school setting and verbalize a general understanding of the basic mechanics of different brands of insulin pumps. They should also be able to describe proper treatment for both hypo/hyperglycemia in Insulin Pump Therapy. Adolescent Reproductive Health At the conclusion of this session participants should be able to identify three common viral STDs, two common bacterial STDs and be able to discuss the role of the school nurse in caring for the reproductive health of the adolescent. Online Professional Portfolio At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to locate at least 2 free Websites for developing an eportfolio and describe the advantages/uses of a professional portfolio. Participants may have the opportunity to design a simple e-portfolio, so please bring information with you on a flash drive, if possible. Implementing Section 504 in the School Setting At the conclusion of the session participants will be able to discuss the steps in the 504 eligibility processes to include identification/referral, evaluation, determination of eligibility, development of 504 Plan, and reevaluation. Also they will be able to identify two specific roles of the school nurse in the 504 eligibility process. Page 6 Know the Glow At the conclusion of the session participants will be able to recognize the school nurses’ role in meeting Health People 2020 objectives for vision health, learn how “Know the Glow” promotes early detection of eye disease and identify diseases that may cause leukocoria in flash photography. They will also learn to identify the “glow” in a picture and consider ways “Know the Glow” can be implemented in their school division. Breakout Sessions 3 and 4 July 13 – Session 3; 8:45 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.; Session 4; 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Autism At the conclusion of the session participants will be able to discuss current issues related to students with autism and describe strategies for effective communication with learners with autism. They will also be able to describe strategies with increasing success with medication administration and other routines. Depression and Anxiety in the School Age Child At the conclusion of this session participants should be able to recognize the three major forms of depression, understand how genetics play a role in depression and anxiety, and explore self-care and alternative approaches to treating depression and anxiety. Use of Social Media by School Nurses At the conclusion of this session participants should be able to discuss the different types of social media that might be used by school nurses and discuss confidentially considerations for the use of social media in the school health setting. Documentation At the conclusion of this session participants should be able to discuss elements of appropriate documentation in the school setting, including models/methods, electronic documentation, and privacy implications. They should also be able to define NANDA Nursing Diagnoses and discuss their use in documentation. Concussions: Return to Learn At the conclusion of this session participants should be able to explain the goals and identify the stages of the Return to Learn process for concussion management. They also should be able to discuss the responsibilities of the school nurse in managing the care of a student in the RTL process after the diagnosis of a concussion. Service Animals in Schools At the conclusion of this session participants should be able to discuss the Virginia Department of Education Guidelines for School Division Policy and Procedures Regarding Service Animals in Virginia’s Public Schools and discuss practical classroom management of students with service animals. APPS for School Nurses At the conclusion of the session participants will be able to identify at least three APPs that a school nurse may be able to use in nursing practice and verbalize how the information found in at least one APP can be most effectively utilized in their personal practice. Page 7 School Nurses Caring for the Unique Needs and Healthy Social Development of LGBTQ Youth At the conclusion of the session participants will be able to verbalize appropriate use of the terms describing the unique needs and the healthy social development of LGBTQ youth and to compare and contrast physical, mental, and social health risks that are higher for sexual minority youth than their heterosexual peers and discuss the role of the school nurse to recognize health risks that are disproportionately higher for sexual minority students, provide health services that are safe, private, and confidential and make referrals for evidence-based care. Also they should be able to identify and advocate for policies in the school environment to assure physical, psychological and social safety of sexual minority students and students with gay and lesbian parents. The 8-hour course covers a range of common disorders and potential crises such as helping a young person who is having a panic attack, is contemplating suicide or is struggling with substance abuse. 2:00pm-5:15pm Physical Assessment for the School Nurse- Registered Nurses only At the conclusion of the session, participants will be able to describe the four basic techniques of a head to toe physical assessment of the school age child, and differentiate abnormal from normal physical assessment findings. (FLE) Sexual Education: The Basics At the conclusion of the session, participants will be able to list at least four components of human sexuality and identify two of their own personal attitudes or values related to adolescent sexuality. They will also be able to describe the philosophy of comprehensive sexuality education.
