HOLLOW METAL DOORS AND FRAMES
PART 1.00 - GENERAL
1.01
SCOPE OF WORK:
A.
WORK INCLUDED:
The Contractor shall furnish all materials, labor,
equipment and services necessary to fabricate, furnish, deliver and install
hollow metal doors and pressed steel frames as called for on the drawings
and/or specified herein, including but not necessarily limited to the following
items:

SUBMITTALS:
A.
SHOP DRAWINGS: Shop drawings shall be prepared for hollow metal doors
and frames and submitted to the Engineer for approval in accordance with
Section 0130.
Shop drawings shall show all dimensions, gauges,
reinforcements, cutouts, attachments to adjacent construction and other
pertinent data necessary for the complete and proper installation of hollow
metal doors and frames.

STORAGE AND HANDLING OF MATERIALS: Doors and frames shall be
stored in an upright position under cover at the building site on wood sills or on
floors in a manner that will prevent rust and damage.

All necessary means shall be used to protect materials specified under
this Section from damage before, during and after installation.
The work of other trades shall be adequately protected from damage
resulting from work specified under this Section.
Doors shall not be held open during construction by any means that
might damage door or frame.
In the event of damage to materials or work in place, all necessary
repairs and replacements shall be immediately made to the satisfaction
of the Engineer at no additional cost to the Owner.
Warped doors and doors with bent face sheets must be replaced at no
additional cost to the Owner.
PACKAGING AND MARKING: All doors shall be individually packaged in
corrugated cartons completely covering entire door to prevent damage to door
and finish. Each package shall be marked with a door number corresponding
to the door schedule on the drawings.
COORDINATION: The hollow metal fabricator shall be responsible for coordinating
preparation of hollow metal shop drawings and fabrication of hollow metal with the
approved finish hardware schedule required under Section 0870 of these
specifications.

PART 2.00 - PRODUCTS
2.01
MATERIALS:
A.
BASIC MATERIALS: Interior doors shall be fabricated from roller-leveled
prime quality cold rolled steel sheets. Exterior doors shall be fabricated from
roller-leveled prime quality hot dipped galvanized steel sheets. All frames shall
be fabricated from commercial quality hot dipped galvanized steel sheet.
Galvanized finish shall be spangle free and exhibit a smooth gray matted
surface. Galvanized coating shall be G90 commercial galvanized coating
(minimum) conforming to ASTM A446 and ASTM A525. All materials used in
the fabricating of hollow metal doors and pressed steel frames shall be free
from defects impairing their strength, durability or appearance.
B.
HOLLOW METAL DOORS: Standard duty hollow metal doors shall be
provided except where heavy duty doors are required by the drawings. Doors
shall be 1-3/4 inch thick, of hollow metal construction and fabricated of two 18
gauge steel sheets. Doors with door buffers shall be fabricated from 16 gauge
sheets. A one-piece resin-impregnated honeycomb core with sanded edges
shall be securely bonded to both face sheets. The vertical door edges shall be
mechanically interlocked. All doors shall have flush seamless face sheets.
The top and bottom of the doors shall be closed flush by 16 gauge steel
channels. Door edge joints shall be continuously welded and ground flush.
Door head joints shall be continuously welded and ground flush in a watertight
manner. Hinge reinforcements shall be 7 gauge steel, drilled and tapped by
the manufacturer. Doors prepared for lights shall have the openings framed
and securely attached. Glazing beads shall be the screwless snap-in type.
Doors shall have a minimum sound transmission classification of 32 as tested
under ASTM E90. Doors shall have a maximum heat transmission coefficient,
"U", of 0.41.
C.
PRESSED STEEL FRAMES:
1.
Frames: Pressed steel frames shall be double rabbeted design with
depth and profile as shown on the drawings and furnished with
minimum 5/8 inch stop. Jambs and headers shall be fabricated of 16
gauge prime quality cold rolled steel. Frames shall be combination type
with integral trim, fabricated with full welded unit type construction.
Head and jamb members of welded frames shall be mitered, securely
welded and ground smooth.

2.02
FABRICATION:
A.
WORKMANSHIP: All work shall be shop fabricated to required profiles by
forming and welding with corners, angles and edges straight and true. Fit and
fabricate accurately with corners, joints, seams and surfaces free from warp,
wave, buckle or other defects.

HARDWARE PREPARATION:

Doors: Doors shall have 7 gauge steel integral hinge reinforcement
with provision for full mortise template type hinges. Doors shall have
continuous minimum 12 gauge steel integral lock reinforcement with
provisions for hardware specified in Section 0870. Mortise, reinforce,
drill and tap doors at factory to receive all specified hardware. All doors
shall be reinforced for closers even if closers are not specified.
Frames: Frames shall have 7 gauge steel hinge tap plate reinforcement
projection welded with provisions for full mortise template type hinges
and 12 gauge steel strike tap plate reinforcement projection welded with
provision for strike. Strike jambs shall be provided with three holes. All
frames shall be reinforced for closers even where closers are not
specified
SHOP FINISH: Doors and frames shall be chemically treated for optimum paint
adherence and painted a uniform coat of rust-inhibiting quality primer. The primer shall
be baked on at proper temperatures. Prime finishes on all doors and frames shall
meet the ASTM humidity and salt spray tests as prescribed by ASTM D2247 and
ASTM B117.
PART 3.00 - EXECUTION
3.01
INSTALLATION AND WORKMANSHIP:
A.
FRAMES: Door frames shall be installed plumb, straight and true; rigidly
secured in place and properly braced. Frames shall be anchored securely to
concrete floors.
B.
DOORS: Hollow metal doors shall be hung with all clearances accurately
maintained. All hardware shall be attached after finish painting. Doors shall be
installed in a manner to achieve the intended functional operation and
appearance.
C.
TOUCH-UP: All abrasions in shop primed finishes shall be touched-up with
same type and color primer at the time of installation.

D.
ADJUSTMENTS: All doors and frames shall be adjusted as necessary to
provide smooth, proper operation.
E.
UNUSED HARDWARE PREPARATIONS: In lieu of replacement, hollow metal
work having unused hardware preparations may be filled with automotive body
filler and ground smooth when permitted by the Engineer. Unused hardware
preparations that are covered with bare metal fillers alone will not be permitted.
