Director of the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital Position Description College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences Colorado State University The position of Director of the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Colorado State University is equivalent to an Associate Dean or Department Head in rank/seniority and will report directly to the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. This position is instrumental in shaping the future of the VTH as well as in influencing the direction of the College as a top tier institution. Primary Responsibilities: Participate as a member of the CVMBS Executive Council. Oversee Argus Client Support Team. Supervise the Small Animal and Large Animal Chiefs of Staff. Oversee the VTH Leadership Team. Continue commitment to teaching and research, expanding on the institutions reputation for advances in instructional technology. Lead and coordinate clinical teaching caseload at the VTH. Provide programmatic guidance for business practices. Ensure the VTH continues to provide the highest level of service to patients, clients, and referring veterinarians. Consult with, advise, and recommend hospital policy to the Dean and Executive Leadership of the College. Serve as the liaison for VTH personnel and operations along with the Associate Dean for the Professional Veterinary Medical (PVM) Program, the Director of the Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, Department Heads whose faculty practice in the VTH and support services including radiology, anesthesia, and anatomic clinical pathology. Chair the Hospital Board that represents all sections and personnel. Provide leadership, coordination, mentoring and advocacy of the clinical faculty, residents, interns and administrative professionals of the hospital. Along with the Associate Dean of PVM and Department Head(s), the Director will provide annual performance evaluations of the clinical activities of the faculty members based on input from Sections Chiefs as well as other sources such as referral veterinarians. Assist with the selection/hiring of faculty members, interns and residents with clinical duties Oversee and supervise the activities of the Hospital Business & Finance Manager, Facilities Coordinator, Reception/Call Center Manager, Service Excellence Coordinator, Medical Records Supervisor, Pharmacy Manager, and Nursing Manager. Advocate for PVM clinical training programs, fostering the incorporation of new instructional technology into VTH teaching functions, and assisting the PVM Associate Dean with obtaining additional resources for the VTH PVM program mission. Responsible for ensuring quality patient care and management. Chief problem solver for referring veterinarians and clients. Address issues related to the quality of clinical teaching. Perform significant outreach and development services. Facilitate South Campus strategic planning for future expansion of hospital facilities and clinical services. Serve as VTH liaison to state and regional veterinary organizations. Foster strong relations with Colorado Veterinary Medical Association, American Animal Hospital Association, Colorado Cattlemen’s Association, and the Colorado Livestock Association. Promote biosecurity policies and ensure safety of clients, staff and animals Facilitate interpersonal communication & relationship building through partnership with the VTH Leadership Team, a diverse group of clinical specialists, clerical staff, business specialists, medical technicians, students and faculty. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to maintain hospital operations and fiscal stability. Ability to coalesce medical and business decision making practices. Ability to set and guide a vision for the long-term success of the hospital. Minimum Qualifications: Current CSU employee. Renowned clinical veterinarian with a strong track record in academia Strong scholarly excellence sufficient to support appointment as a tenured professor in one of the departments of the college. Degree in Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent). Board Certification in an AVMA specialty Preferred Qualifications: Personal and professional commitment to diversity as demonstrated by involvement in teaching, research, creative activity, service to the profession and/or diversity/inclusion activities. Demonstrated excellence in teaching.
