Parents,
As part of our teacher planning which took place Wednesday, November 18, we found a
stumbling block with the student’s ability to type in the online writing assessment within the
reading test area. Our reading scores may have declined due to the inability of students to type
words, sentences, and paragraphs correctly. We are continuing to find ways to implement
keyboarding skills in our curriculum, but we would like your assistance.
Please allow your child to practice typing online at the sites listed below. Please start at
level one which teaches the home row keys. We understand that not all students have internet
or a computer. We are still providing time in our labs to help students practice these skills, but
we know that practice helps us to improve. If you have a computer but no internet service,
please allow your child/children to practice typing in Microsoft Word or the Notepad found in
the accessories folder in your computer’s programs files.
Learn the “Home Row” first!

As a reward for attempting these practices at home, the student can earn bonus points. In
order to receive those bonus points, the components listed below must be present in a typed
printed paper using a word processing software program found on your computer. Kids, start
typing, printing, and bringing your completed work for credit. Present it to your teacher first
thing in the morning each day.

Thank you so much for promoting technology use. Our students, and your children, are living
in the digital age. They will require these skills throughout their education here in the Roane
County schools system and as they continue toward higher education. We are attempting to provide
the very best for your child/children. Please support us in this case. Promote the learning of the
keys on the computer keyboard for proper typing skills. Thanks again! Mrs. Tina Riley
