Background on GFCI Safety Issues:
Important safety considerations for any GFCI installation have always included:
• Is it wired properly (line/load reversal)?
• Has it been damaged by voltage surges
or
corrosion so that it will not trip in the
event of a ground fault?
• Is it tested regularly?
SmartLock® Information
Industry-wide efforts to prevent line/load wiring reversals
have never been 100% effective. More importantly, endusers still do not regularly test their GFCI’s. As a result,
GFCI’s damaged by voltage surges or corrosion that may
not operate properly are often reset without any further
testing. Consumers are at risk by continuing to use a
GFCI receptacle that cannot respond to a hazardous
ground fault. This has been a particular concern for public
safety agencies including the U. S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission (CPSC).
Meeting the New 1/1/03 UL Requirements:
Manufacturers must implement changes to address the
major GFCI concern:
Be Smart...Look for the Lock
1) Diagnostic Indication for Miswiring- In brief, if GFCI’s
are miswired with a line/load reversal, there must be a
diagnostic indication. Leviton’s SmartLock® already conforms to this because it cannot be reset if there is a line/load reversal.
2) Surge Immunity - Since surges are a leading cause of GFCI failures, increased surge immunity is required.
Corrosion Resistance - New criteria for corrosion resistance help to eliminate another cause of GFCI failures.
3) False Tripping - New requirements will also help ensure that GFCI’s are more resistant to false tripping caused by electrical
noise.
Leviton’s SmartLock will meet or exceed all the new corrosion resistance and noise immunity requirements.
Leviton’s Unique Position:
UL wants GFCI manufacturers to provide more protection for the internal GFCI circuitry and Leviton fully supports this effort.
However, what will happen when a GFCI is damaged despite its improved resistance to surges and corrosion? Under the new
requirements, the GFCI can still be reset after it’s damaged.
Leviton developed the product that goes further: SmartLock. If for any reason SmartLock is damaged and can no longer provide

ground fault protection, it cannot be reset. Leviton invented this patented lockout action and is currently the only GFCI manufacturer offering this feature and the first to manufacture a GFCI that is fully compliant with the new UL requirements for 2003.
