There are two basic categories of classes offered in the Intermediate Department at REACH Co-op.

Elective Enrichment

Core Courses

ELECTIVE ENRICHMENT

If you are looking for elective classes with limited or no accountability, you may want to consider these classes. These could be counted toward credit if parents add an appropriate amount of course work. There will be accountability for any homework assigned.

CORE COURSES (20% REACH AND 80% PARENT INSTRUCTION)

These courses offered at REACH will involve more accountability and assistance in your homeschooling. The teachers will give assignments for your student to complete at home and the course would qualify for “academic” credits on a school transcript. As we only meet once a week as a group, 80% of the instruction and grading will be required to be completed by student & parent at home.

Supplies Required: All students will need to provide their own flute. Flutes can be bought, rented, or borrowed. If you have any problems obtaining one, please contact Norma Williams over the summer for assistance. They also must bring a pencil and a folder in which to keep all handouts given in class.

This class will cover all the basics and fundamentals of learning to play the flute. This includes learning to read music an d basic music theory along with playing the flute. We will begin by mastering tone production on the head joint of the flute, followed by learning four simple three note songs on the foot joint/head joint combination, and finally putting the entire flute together. This class is open to students from 5 th

through 12 th

grades. Students will be required to bring all of their supplies to every class. Students may have to perform at Fall and Spring Showcases + other events throughout year.

We will follow two 6-week Bible study curricula that focuses on a particular topic that will be applicable to boys of all ages, but will be divided into one intermediate and one high school class. We will memorize Bible verses and will have weekly Bible reading assignments that are connected to the study. It would be best to study the materials in the book ahead of time each week so that you will be prepared to discuss the topics, but very minimal if any homework will be assigned.

The students will be broken into teams (min of two) and expected to create a film project from idea conception to final production. The final film will be at least 5 minutes in length and may be a documentary, animated/stopmotion, or live action as the team cho oses but must remain within the class guidelines for a Biblical worldview as well as appropriate for all audiences. The class will use the Studio

Pack from Crystal Creek Media described as follows:

The Studio Pack is a comprehensive film-training program. Designed for the high-school student or adult learner, this course contains a wealth of information on film-making. A book study of the Newberry Medal winning book, The Giver, by Lois Lowry.

Story Summary: Jonas lives in a perfect society: no pain, no hunger, nothing that might make life inconvenient. In Jonas's world, all children are assigned the jobs they will do as adults. After receiving his job, Jonas learns what his society has lost to achieve perfection and he will never be the same.

We will dig into the essence of the novel with lessons on literary terms, comprehension and analysis, critical thinking, related scriptural principles, vocabulary, and activities. We will examine issues from a Christian perspective. Our culminating activity for this class will be to watch the newly released movie “The Giver”.

Learn to play the guitar!

Prerequisites: None

Homework Required: This class requires a large commitment to practicing every day. It will be fast-paced, but by the end of the semester students should be able to participate in playing with a praise band, or perhaps be able to lead worship on thei r own. Homework each week will be to practice playing several chord progressions each week, as well as practicing songs.

Two CD’s will be provided for practicing songs and chords.

Supplies Required: Students must have an acoustic guitar (electric will not work for this class because they require an

An electric-acoustic guitar is what I use, and that just means it is still acoustic, but I can plug it directly in to an amplifier or sound system without having to buy a “pick-up.” (I know, this can get complicated.) Please have a full-size guitar, as well. There are many prices for guitars, and buying used is certainly okay if you know what to expect from a guitar.

The safest bet is to buy an inexpensive guitar from a music store, where they can make sure the strings are put on it and there won’t be a possibility of something being lost, broken, or loose.

This course is intended for 1 credit in Texas History. It is a one year overview of Texas history and literature. The cours e uses the

Writing assignments may include basic paragraphs and book reports. As REACH only meets one day a week, 80% parental involvement IS REQUIRED.

This course will help lay the foundation for college-level reading and writing by giving students the opportunity to write papers and do peer-reviewed analyses and will deepen understanding of the indispensable role that we, as Christians, continue to play in the world of literature.

Expectations/Notes:

Students will be expected to read between 25 to 50 pages per week. Each class period will begin with a 5-minute comprehension quiz to ensure that all students are keeping up with the reading. The class will consist of a thorough class discussion of the previous week’s reading during which the students will be expected to take notes. There will be one short paper due (2-4 pages) per semester and one long paper due (5-8 pages) per semester. These will be peer-reviewed and then handed in for grading by the instructor. We will talk at length about the expected structure of these assignments and each student will be graded according to his/her academic level (as assessed by the instructor) with the goal being consistent improvement in writing skills.

Description: Playing settlers starting for Oregon in 1846, students determine which supplies to carry west, keep diaries, make trail decisions, and write reports to gain credits that move their wagons across a map. Fate Cards interject problems such as weather, wagon breakdowns, and wild animals.

Expectations/Notes:

In this simulation, the students will be paired off and will be required to work cooperatively in partnership. Most of the work will be done in class, but there will be minimal at-home study and one WRITE-AT-HOME REPORT. Students will be writing a few in-class narratives as well. As in the pioneer days, the partners will depend heavily on one another to keep the wagon train moving and making good progress. Our progress will be tracked weekly on a classroom map and the students will need to make quick, but educated, decisions that will impact the progress of their respective wagons and keep the pioneers healthy and safe. All supplies will be provided. A good attitude and a sense of adventure are all they will need if they want to head west in Pioneers!

What laws govern their observed behaviors? from the perspective that everyth ing that exists was and is God's creation. The home and class laboratory experiments help illustrate physical concepts and theories which are only man's current knowledge or belief on the subject.

First semester topics include air and earth's atmosphere, water and earth's hydrosphere, earth's lithosphere, and weather. Second semester covers motion, Newton's laws, forces, sound, light, an introduction to astrophysics.

Class lecture and discussion of assigned reading material and text problems precede the laboratory experiments.

The students will maintain a notebook which includes pre-lab and post-lab experiment writeups, “On Your Own” problems and module tests.
