APA Journals Expansion Strategy
– Jason Winkler, Director, Strategic Business Development
T
he APA Journals catalogue has grown significantly this year
and is slated to continue its trajectory, both in content areas
and number of publications, in the coming years. APA Journals
profiles research of scholarly rigor in our publishing portfolio
and PsycARTICLES® database, while in doing so, upholding our
mission of advancing the science and practice of psychology. To
that end, our strategy is to acquire top tier journals and create
new publications in areas of growing interest.
To identify these topic areas, we continuously monitor and ana
lyze trends, such as the number of manuscripts and dissertations
on a given subject area over time. Additionally, we survey our
existing journal subscribers, regularly inquire to our advisory
groups of librarians, graduate students, and early career psycholo
gists, and discuss new journal ideas with APA’s Publications and
Communications Board and Journal Advisory Committee. By
engaging with subject matter experts and end users of research, we have a
more informed and better prioritized publication expansion agenda.

If we are seeking to acquire an existing publication, we will routinely look
to the depth and breadth of currently published content on that subject
area. Additional characteristics we look for include in which services the
journal is abstracted and indexed, if it has a consistent flow of manuscript
submissions, whether the journal will complement or compete with our
existing publications, if it has an affiliated professional society, and if it is
serving a need among our members or the greater psychology community.

Future Outlook
In 2014, we will be expanding our portfolio to cover areas in clinical,
social, evolutionary, experimental, neuroscience, and cognitive
psychology as well as psychiatry and social work. We are proud to begin
publishing these eight journals next year:
■ The Journal of Threat Assessment and Management is a very timely
publication that will focus exclusively on the subject of violence

risk. It is affiliated with the four top-tier threat
assessment professional associations and has strong
international representation on its editorial board.
The editors seek articles dealing with the
development, implementation and evaluation of
procedures related to violence risk, particularly
those with an international, interdisciplinary, or
collaborative focus.
APA expects to begin publication of this quarterly
journal in March 2014.
■ The American Journal of Orthopsychiatry is the princi
pal publication of the American Orthopsychiatric
Association. As a multidisciplinary journal, it is
highly relevant to psychologists, social workers,
psychiatrists, and psychiatric nurses alike and
received a 2012 impact factor of 1.60. The journal
informs public policy and practice relating to men
tal health and human development.
The journal is dedicated to publishing articles that
discuss factors in the prevention and correction of
injustice and the sustainable development of a just
and humane society. Editors welcome submissions
with a theoretical or analytical focus, as well as
empirical research.
APA will begin publication of the journal in early
2014, and expects to publish issues bimonthly.
Back issues will be available.
■ Qualitative Psychology is the official journal of the
Society for Qualitative Inquiry in Psychology,
a section of APA Division 5 (Evaluation,
Measurement and Statistics). The journal will cover
any content area in psychology so long as the
research is based on qualitative models of inquiry.
Since formally announcing the launch of this
journal at the 2013 APA Convention, the response
from the international psychology community has
been overwhelmingly positive.
It will provide a forum for innovative methodologi
cal, theoretical, and empirical work in psychology.
The editors seek articles representing a variety of
methodological approaches, as well as discussions
of teaching and training in qualitative research.
Volume 1, Issue 1 will be published in 2014. A
special issue was released in August and is available
in PsycARTICLES now.
■ Spirituality in Clinical Practice will be a practiceoriented journal, providing a forum to highlight
the actual and potential professional application
of spirituality in psychotherapy. In addition, it will
publish models of application from related fields
such as medicine, biology, and neuroscience.
Volume 1, Issue 1 of this quarterly publication will
be published in 2014. A special issue was released
in August and is available in PsycARTICLES now.
■ Psychology of Sexual Orientation, the official journal
of APA Division 44 (Society for the Psychological
Study of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender
Issues), is launching after a decade of discussion
and planning with the Division and APA. It will
serve as a primary outlet for research in the field
of sexual orientation and gender diversity as it
impacts practice, education, public policy, and
social action. Editors welcome empirical research,
theoretical articles, reviews and clinical case
studies.
APA expects to release Volume 1, Issue 1 in the
first quarter of 2014. A special issue was released in
August and is available in PsycARTICLES now.
■ Psychology of Consciousness: Theory, Research, and
Practice will focus on the scientific study of
phenomena long considered to lie outside the
boundary of traditional studies and will present
clinical approaches to modifying attention and
consciousness. It will publish in research areas such
as hypnosis, suggestion, meditation, mindfulness,
and the measurement of conscious states.
The focus will be on empirical research, though
theory, analysis, reviews and case studies are wel
come.
Volume 1, Issue 1 of this quarterly publication will
be published in 2014. A special issue was released
in August and is available in PsycARTICLES now.
■ Decision will be a journal for research on judgment
and decision making. It will focus on the
theoretical understanding of neural, cognitive,
social, and economic aspects of human judgment
and decision-making behavior. It will publish in
research areas including prediction, evaluation,
choice, and decisions under risk uncertainty.
