Communication is never efficient if it’s not effective. Make sure you and the other person completely understand what has been said. Repeat back the major points to each other. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself having the conversation all over again. Only then, it will be more complex because of misunderstandings. Focus on being effective for greater efficiency. It leads to BIGG success! Get more tips from BIGG Success here. Danville Gardens now open for fall! Learn to Make Leaf Casts with Master Gardener Pat Sollars on September 20 - By the end of summer, the perennials, shrubs and trees in your yard may have produced some Jurassic-sized leaves. When you look out the window in January, those leaves will be a distant memory. Fortunately, there is a creative way to preserve what nature has created and enjoy it for years to come. Leaf casts make unique and beautiful garden art. They also provide great gifts and make excellent conversation pieces for visitors to your garden. They can be made with all sorts of leaves, such as hosta, fig, rhubarb, sycamore and much more. Large leaves make great bird baths, stepping stones or even fountains. Medium-sized leaves can be used as candle holders, to hold jewelry or even paperweights. The cast is made from products you can find at a local hardware store like concrete, sand, outdoor paint and sealer. The process is done over several days but is fairly simple and inexpensive. Join the University of Illinois Extension Vermilion County Master Gardeners for a unique program all about making leaf casts. Master Gardener Pat Sollars has been making leaf casts for years. An experienced artisan, she will walk you through the process with samples of each stage. You will learn how a leaf's natural depressions and veins can be captured in the smallest detail. Pat will also explain how to paint a cured cast. There will be detailed instructions for you to take home. This event will take place on Tuesday, September 20 at 6PM at the Danville Public Library. There is a $5 admission fee, which will be used to fund Master Gardener programs and community gardens in Vermilion County. Due to logistics, this will not be a Make and Take class. To register, call the Extension office at 217-442-8615 or register online at https://web.extension.illinois.edu/registration/?RegistrationID=14927. University of Illinois Extension provides equal opportunities in programs and employment. If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate, please call the Extension Office. These Master Gardeners have worked with the center to maintain and enhance a garden setting that provides a peaceful environment for all who come in contact with the garden areas. Vegetables and herbs are grown in elevated beds and made available for the staff and clients. There is an area for pollinators where Mattie Wallace raises Monarchs and Swallowtail butterflies. She holds programs explaining the importance of specific plants to bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. The team’s work has led to creating an educational place that adults and children look forward to visiting. In addition to the teamwork award, Vermilion County Master Gardeners received five individual awards. Only 2% of statewide active Master Gardeners are recognized annually with this award: Harry Bogen received an Outstanding Master Gardener award for his work with the Bunker Hill Herb Garden and the Plant a Row for the Hungry project at the Kennekuk County Park Atwood House garden. John Bukowski also received the award for his work with Plant a Row. The two work together each year to plan what will be grown for the local food pantry. Over 1,000 pounds of fresh vegetables have been donated yearly since the two became involved in the project. John is also a regular commentator on the weekly WDAN garden program and received advanced pesticide training from the state of Illinois which allows him to manage weeds in Master Gardener community gardens. Leah Brennan also received the Outstanding Master Gardener award. Brennan is known for her dedication to Master Gardener training classes, the annual Garden Day and Garden Walk and her roles as a 4-H Floral Arrangement Judge and a Make It Bloom judge. She also heads the Vermilion County Master Gardener Hospitality committee and is the current Vermilion County Master Gardener president. Master Gardener Dee Toole was another recipient of the Outstanding Master Gardener award. Toole has served as secretary for many Master Gardener committees, is active with Garden Day and has served as a Make It Bloom judge many times. Dee is not afraid to put her pen down and get her hands dirty – she has also worked in several Master Gardener community garden projects. For her work with the Vermilion County Master Gardeners, Mary Stonecipher received the Sustained Excellence Award. This award recognizes past outstanding Master Gardeners for continued dedication. Stonecipher has chaired many projects, including the annual Garden Walk and Garden Day Silent Auction. She is well known for her garden themed presentations throughout the community. In past years she has focused on Douglas Discovery Garden, writing grants, designing garden beds and organizing work dates and fund raisers. She has a tremendous amount of horticulture knowledge and is a true artist in the garden. Congratulations to all the 2016 Master Gardener award winners from Vermilion County!
