Many religious from different congregations around the world are involved in this issue from Central America and Guatemala to Indonesia and the Philippines. It is an issue affecting many poor communities and causing serious damage to the environment. This is an issue that the Integrity of Creation Working group will be focussing on also. If you have information on what your brothers and sisters are doing on this issue, please forward the information to the JPIC office at jpicusguisg@lasalle.org 1.3 FAO Working Group: At the September 15th meeting of the group, it was decided to ask congregations, members of the working group, to make a written commitment to supporting the project, either financially or by other means. Before a full-time advocate at the FAO, probably a religious, can be contracted, there needs to be a minimum of 20,000 Euro assured every year for three years. To date, several congregations have made financial commitments. A clearer picture will emerge at the next meeting. Responses to a letter sent to the G20 Agriculture ministers were received from – the US Dept of Agriculture UK, the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs UK, and from the Chief Minister of Agriculture, Brazil. 1.4 Somali Refugee Project: A group of lay people associated with the SVDs in Portugal want to financially support a project(s) in favour of Somali refugees, either in Kenya or Ethiopia. Does anyone know of religious who are directly involved in this work who might be interested in receiving funding? If so, and for more details, contact Fr. Pio svd at piolitosvd@gmail.com 1.5 Reminders: • JPIC Distance Learning Program: The Spiritan-owned Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, USA, has launched a JPIC Distance Learning Program (in English) in mid-August 2011.
