Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate
knowledge of: electricity supply cable work sites; electricity
supply cable installation; and cable installation reporting and
recording.

Explanatory notes

This unit standard is intended for, but not restricted to, workplace assessment. The
range statements within the unit standard can be applied according to enterprise
specific equipment, procedures and processes.

Performance and work practices in relation to the outcomes and evidence
requirements must comply with all current legislation, especially the
Electricity Act 1992 and any subsequent amendments, and any regulations, codes of
practice recognised under that statute, Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992,
the Resource Management Act 1991, and their subsequent amendments, electricity
supply industry codes of practice and documented enterprise procedures. These
include the latest version of, Safety Manual – Electricity Industry (SM-EI) Wellington:
Electricity Engineers’ Association.

The phrase in accordance with industry requirements is implicit in all outcomes and
evidence requirements in this unit standard.

Definitions
Industry requirements include all asset owner requirements; manufacturers’
specifications; and enterprise requirements which cover the documented workplace
policies, procedures, specifications, business, and quality management requirements
relevant to the workplace in which assessment is carried out.
Asset owner refers to the owner of an electricity supply network that takes its point of
supply from Transpower NZ, and delivers electricity to industrial, commercial and
residential customers.

This unit standard is intended for use in the assessment of cable jointers, and all
terminology and workplace assessment should be related to that sector of the
industry.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of electricity supply cable work sites.
Evidence requirements
1.1
The requirements of a safe working zone are identified.
1.2
The cable arrangement is identified.
1.3
Installation methods are identified.
Range
may include but is not limited to – equipment location, length of
cable, protection of equipment, site access, site permits, protection
of site access and public;
evidence of four is required.
Outcome 2
Demonstrate knowledge of electricity supply cable installation.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Cable installation methods are explained.
Range
placement, pulling, separation from other services, tension control,
rollers, winches.
2.2
Cable fixing options for pulling are explained.
2.3
Installed cable protection systems are explained.
Range
includes but is not limited to – concrete, plastic, steel, timber.
Outcome 3
Demonstrate knowledge of cable installation reporting and recording.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Cable installation recording and reporting requirements to meet asset owner or
company requirements are explained.
