discuss ongoing and future research under the umbrella of the European Clinical Trial
network.
Pain Management – An International Perspective (WFSA Panel)
This session shares a global perspective about major opportunities and challenges
in pain management. Speakers will address why acute pain becomes chronic pain;
how to educate clinicians about pain management; the challenges in establishing a
multidisciplinary approach to pain management; palliative pain management, a forgotten
entity, and the challenges especially in Africa.
International Connection Lounge
Relax, enjoy a cup of coffee and talk to your colleagues in the International Connection
Lounge. Interpreters and printed Certificates of Attendance will be available.
Global Scholars
The ASA Charitable Foundation Global Scholars Program supports young leaders in the
specialty from low- and middle-income countries who want to participate in the ASA annual
meeting. This program provides an opportunity to support the professional development
of young leaders with fewer resources and the development of the medical specialty of
anesthesiology overseas. The 2016 scholars will present posters from 3:15-5:15 p.m. on

PLENARY LECTURES
Start the day together.
Ellison C. Pierce Memorial Lecture: Patient Safety Beyond Our
Borders: Different and the Same
Saturday, October 22 | 10:45-11:45 a.m.
Presented by: Alexander A. Hannenberg, M.D.
The Pierce Lecture will focus on ways to improve the risks of
anesthesia and surgery in low-resource settings, the opportunities
to advance the safety of surgical patients in those settings and the
ways in which they relate to safety initiatives, past and present, in
the developed world.
Society for Airway Management Ovassapian Lecture: Airway
Management in 2016 and Beyond: New Knowledge, New Drugs and
New Techniques
Sunday, October 23 | 7:45-8:45 a.m.
Presented by: Michael S. Kristensen, M.D.
Airway management is rapidly changing. An abundance of new
techniques calls for a paradigm-shift in airway evaluation and
in the subsequent planning for airway management, including
a clear understanding of the present role of awake intubation. Ultra-rapid reversal of
neuromuscular blockade is now possible, presenting new possibilities, but can also lead to
a false sense of safety. In the lecture, Dr. Kristensen will discuss what can and cannot be
managed by these drugs. Access to the airway via the anterior neck is the ultimate escape
in airway management, but the outcome of this procedure in the hands of physician
anesthesiologists is unsatisfactory. New techniques, including bedside ultrasonography by
the physician anesthesiologist, allow us to be better prepared for this solution.
Emery A. Rovenstine Lecture: On the Road to Professionalism
Monday, October 24 | 8-9:15 a.m.
Presented by: David H. Chestnut, M.D.
In this lecture, Dr. Chestnut will discuss challenges in defining,
teaching, encouraging and maintaining professionalism in the
practice of anesthesiology. Personal attributes, commitments,
behaviors, interactions and influences that are important to the
development and maintenance of physician professionalism will be
discussed.
The following awards will be presented at the Rovenstine Lecture:
• Distinguished Service Award: Alexander A. Hannenberg, M.D.
• Excellence in Research
• Presidential Scholar
• Nicholas M. Greene, M.D., Outstanding Humanitarian Contribution Award
John W. Severinghaus Lecture on Translational Science:
Lost in Translation
Tuesday, October 25 | 11 a.m.-Noon
Presented by: Daniel I. Sessler, M.D.
When surgical patients die, what kills them, and how can anesthesia
reduce major complications and mortality? This lecture will examine
factors that slow progression of new knowledge from bench to
bedside — and how basic scientists, clinical investigators and
clinicians can speed the process.
Lewis H. Wright Memorial Lecture: America’s Doctor Anaesthetists
(1862-1936): Turning a Tide of Asphyxiating Waves
Sunday, October 23 | 8-9:15 a.m.
Presented by: George S. Bause, M.D., M.P.H.
By the 1920s, 100 percent nitrous oxide administered in 1- to
2-minute waves first induced general anesthesia and relaxed many
patients’ muscles. As Dr. Bause reflects, a New-York-based society
of physician anesthetists transformed into the “American Society of
Anesthetists” in 1936 before turning back those tides of asphyxiating waves.
The following WLM awards will be presented at the Wright Lecture: 2016 Laureate of
the History of Anesthesia: George S. Bause, M.D., M.P.H., Distinguished Service Awards:
Donald Caton, M.D., Elliott V. Miller, M.D., Charles C. Tandy, M.D.

FEATURED LECTURES
History Panel: Great Anesthetic Disasters: Lessons From History
Sunday, October 23 | 9:50-11:50 a.m.
Presented by Douglas R. Bacon, M.D., M.A.
Explore several anesthetic disasters from history, and extrapolate
changes in practice and quality assurance.
Celebration of Research
Monday, October 24 | 9:35-11:05 a.m.
The ASA Excellence in Research and Presidential Scholar awardees will present brief
lectures about their research accomplishments, awards will be announced for the Academy
of Anesthesiology Research Mentor and Resident Research Essay, and there will be a brief
update about FAER activities. Don’t miss this exciting session to see your peers being
honored.
FAER Helrich Research Lecture: Harm Prevention in Critical Care:
A Transprofessional Journey
Monday, October 24 | 1:10-2:10 p.m.
Presented by: Michael A. Gropper, M.D., Ph.D.
The intensive care unit (ICU) is a high-risk environment, with patients
susceptible to multiple hospital-acquired conditions or harms. In the
past several years, progress has been made in reducing individual
harms such as catheter-associated bloodstream infection (CABSI)
and ventilator-associated harms (VAH) by focusing intently on the individual harm. Rather
than relying on new technologies, these harm reductions have come from improved
processes of care and teamwork. At the same time, we have come to recognize harm
to patients in the form of failure to treat patients with respect and dignity, and failure to
align the wishes of patients and families with providers. This presentation will discuss the
above harms, along with an innovative approach to simultaneously prevent multiple harms
in ICU patients, utilizing a trans-professional approach, new technology, and engaging
patients and families in their own care.
WLM Patrick Sim Forum on the History of Anesthesiology:
Intrathecal Anesthesia: The First 20 Years
Monday, October 24 | 2-4 p.m.
Moderated by: David B. Waisel, M.D.
Leaders in the fields of local anesthetics and intrathecal
anesthesia will trace the contributions of pioneers who, through
an understanding of the necessary physiologic and pharmacologic
factors, were able to develop apparatus and drugs necessary for the
clinical use of intrathecal anesthesia.
