Press release 4 November 2015 Electronic toolbox for timber construction professionals: Stora Enso launches its new design software CLTengineer Free online tool supports planning and static design of wooden construction projects with Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) Vienna, 4 November 2015: For years now Stora Enso's CLT has been used in projects of outstanding quality and thereby established itself as a sustainable building material of the future. In order for architects and structural engineers as well as carpenters to get the most out of this innovative material Stora Enso now offers CLTengineer the free, platformindependent online tool that lets you create perfect designs for ceilings, roofs, supports, supporting beams, lintels, bearings, continuous beams and CLT panels. The latest findings in materials research as well as extensive investigations into the load bearing behaviour of CLT make CLTengineer an indispensable planning tool for timber construction technicians. Photo: © Stora Enso CLTengineer replaces a previous tool called "Bemessung CLT" and offers extended functionalities Stora Enso has offered a design guide for CLT for some time with its "Bemessung CLT" software, which until now has been intensively used by engineers for a wide range of projects. From now on 2/4 users can perform the same calculations in CLTengineer; all existing Bemessung CLT modules have been incorporated into the new tool: Design of CLT panels with loads acting perpendicularly to the horizontal plane (ceilings and roofs) Ribbed ceilings CLT supports CLT wall panels (horizontal and vertical loads in the CLT plane) Lintels (above windows and doors) Wall-like supporting beams Bearing design Building reinforcement In CLTengineer these modules have been extended, however, to include national annexes to the Eurocode standards as well as new functionalities. In the ribbed ceiling module for example it is now also possible to calculate hollow box ceilings. For CLT supports loads can be considered both as acting along the horizontal plane or perpendicularly to it. The CLT wall panel module has been completely restructured and is based on a method of approximation developed in cooperation with the Holzbau Forschungs GmbH based at the Technical University of Graz. As a result it is now possible to consider openings in CLT wall panels, such as doors and windows, which have a significant influence on wall stiffness. Thanks to the integration of the CLT wall panel module into the building reinforcement module it is now also possible to transfer the calculated wall stiffness values directly into the building reinforcement calculations. Platform independence, new modules and ongoing expansion In addition to the previous version's functionalities CLTengineer also offers a number of new modules in line with current timber construction requirements: Wooden continuous beams (rectangular cross section) Wooden supports (rectangular cross section) Continuous beams made of steel Steel supports Wood / concrete composites for concrete + CLT, concrete + wooden rib for concrete + CLT + rib 2-axis cantilevered CLT plates (flat roof on a corner of the building) CLT cross-section values The CLTengineer software scores highly not just thanks to its functionalities but also with its attractive design and user-friendliness. The results of all calculations can be represented in a short or long form for example and if necessary also be downloaded as a PDF file and printed. CLTengineer was created as an online tool to ensure that it will work on almost all available devices, no matter whether on a desktop PC, laptop, smartphone or tablet. Users can provide 3/4 valuable feedback via the built-in feedback feature, which is then incorporated into the software's further development. We already know which extended functionalities will come next for CLTengineer. Planned are modules for designing connecting devices, structural physics and a design function to suit Swiss standards (SIA). At the same time CLTengineer is continually being improved and kept up-to-date by Stora Enso's R&D department. "As a leading manufacturer and innovator in the CLT field we stay in close contact with architects, structural engineers and timber construction technicians and we know exactly what they need when creating static designs in their daily work. With the new CLTengineer software we provide them with an important tool for timber construction that they can put to good use in a wide range of projects," explains Herbert Jöbstl, SVP of Stora Enso Wood Products GmbH in Central Europe. Editor's note The CLTengineer design software is available to all interested timber construction technicians at: https://engineer.clt.info as well as on the www.clt.info homepage. It is free to use, all you have to do is register and Stora Enso will then activate it for you. About CLT CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) is a solid wood construction product which is made of at least three layers of single-ply boards, glued together transversely, and is currently produced in a size of up to 2.95 x 16 m. CLT solid wood panels consist of several layers and are available in different panel thicknesses, depending on the static requirements. The lamination is carried out using environmentally-friendly adhesive. CLT offers almost unlimited possibilities regarding design concept, style and architecture and is completely compatible with other construction materials. CLT is suitable for interior and exterior walls, as well as floors and roofs. The finished tailored CLT panels are delivered directly to the construction site, where they are then fitted by a construction company. With an annual capacity of 140,000 cubic metres, Stora Enso is the world's largest producer of CLT. www.clt.info About Stora Enso Wood Products Stora Enso’s Wood Products division provides versatile wood-based solutions for building and housing.
