Very soon, the book becomes his constant companion and he falls in love with reading. A title that transcends the boundaries of the story it contains, The Good Little Book opens up with an illustrated note listing the people that the book used to belong to. This message makes a full circle when at the very end of the story, the boy spots someone else reading the book that he has lost. 16 A short and sweet story to share the joy of reading with, The Good Little Book may also resonate with older readers with its theme of how one story can belong to many different people. Contributed by Koh Wei Lian Junior Reading Ambassador Review HOUSE OF SECRETS Author: Chris Columbus, Ned Vizzini Publisher: London: HarperCollins Children’s, 2013 Call No.: Junior Lending English COL This is one of my favourite books! It is a story about three kids that are forced to move into a new house and have no idea that they would unleash a dark magic locked within. They must now fight against a bone-crunching giant and many other deadly enemies! And if they fail, they will never get to see their parents again and the crazed witch will take over the world! a Contributed by Aislinn Margaret Doyle, 11 years old CHIJ Primary (Toa Payoh), Primary 5 JS Book Review THE BEAR THAT WASN’T Author: Frank Tashlin Publisher: New York: New York Review Books, 2010 Call No.: Junior Lending Simple Fiction English TAS A seemingly simple fable that packs a subtle satirical punch, The Bear That Wasn’t begins with a bear who wakes up to find himself in a factory built atop his cave while he was hibernating. He is forced to work in the factory as nobody believes that he is a bear. Confused about his own identity, the bear gradually accepts the general opinion of the people around him only for nature to take its course. A thought-provoking tale for more mature children, The Bear That Wasn’t is an exploration of an individual's plight in a bureaucratic and mechanized world and how a lie repeated often enough can become accepted as the truth. 17 Contributed by Dilip Kumar Storytimes Central Region Eastern Region Bishan Public Library Tampines Regional Library Thursdays, 3.30 pm – 4.00 pm (4-6 yrs) Every 1st Saturday 11.30 am – 12.00 pm (4-6 yrs) Every 2nd Friday 3.30 pm – 4.00 pm (4-6 yrs) (CH) Toa Payoh Public Library Saturdays, 11.00 am – 11.30 am (4-6 yrs) Every 1st Saturday 12.00 pm – 12.30 pm (4-6 yrs) (CH) Central Public Library Sundays, 12.30 pm – 1.00 pm (4-6 yrs) Every 1st & 3rd Saturday 12.30 pm – 1.00 pm (4-8 yrs) (CH) Every 2nd, 4th & 5th Saturday 12.30 pm – 1.00 pm (4-6 yrs) Cheng San Public Library Fridays, 3.30 pm – 4.00 pm (4-6 yrs) Every 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th Wednesday 3.30 pm – 4.00 pm (4-6 yrs) *Every 3rd & 4th Sunday 2.30 pm – 3.00 pm (4-8 yrs) Serangoon Public Library Wednesdays, 3.30 pm – 4.00 pm (4-6 yrs) *Every 1st & 2nd Saturday 11.30 am – 12.00 pm (4-8 yrs) Legend : 18 CH - Chinese M – Malay T - Tamil * conducted by our Friends of the Library † includes 30 minutes of personalised book recommendations by librarians Tuesdays, 4.00 pm – 4.30 pm (4-6 yrs) Every 1st Friday 4.00 pm – 4.30 pm (4-10 yrs) (M) Every 1st & 3rd Saturday 11.30 am – 12.00 pm (4-10 yrs) (CH)* *Every 2nd & 4th Saturday 11.30 am – 12.00 pm (4-8 yrs) Bedok Public Library Saturdays, 2.30 pm – 3.00 pm (4-8 yrs) (CH) Saturdays, 3.00 pm – 3.30 pm (4-8 yrs) Geylang East Public Library Wednesdays, 7.30 pm – 8.00 pm (4-6 yrs) Every 3rd & 4th Saturday 11.00 am – 11.30 am (4-6 yrs) Every 2nd Wednesday 8.00 pm – 8.30 pm (4-10 yrs) (CH) Marine Parade Public Library Wednesdays, 7.30 pm – 8.00 pm (4-6 yrs) Every 4th Friday 7.30 pm – 8.00 pm (4-10 yrs) (CH) Pasir Ris Public Library Fridays, 7.00 pm - 7.30 pm (4-8 yrs) *Every 2nd & 4th Saturday 11.30 am - 12.00 pm (4-8 yrs) Northern Region Western Region Ang Mo Kio Public Library Bukit Batok Public Library Woodlands Regional Library Saturdays, 3.00 pm – 3.30 pm (4-6 yrs) Every 1st Saturday 4.00 pm – 4.30 pm (4-8 yrs) (CH) Every 2nd Saturday 4.00 pm – 4.30 pm (4-10 yrs) (M) *Every 2nd & 4th Sunday 2.30 pm – 3.00 pm (4-8 yrs) Yishun Public Library Every 1st, 2nd & 3rd Tuesday 3.00 pm – 3.30 pm (4-6 yrs) Every 1st Monday 7.30 pm – 8.00 pm (4-10 yrs) (T) Every 4th Tuesday 3.00 pm – 3.30 pm (4-8 yrs) (CH) *Every 1st & 3rd Saturday 11.30 am – 12.00 pm (4-8 yrs) Sembawang Public Library †Every 1st, 2nd, 4th & 5th Wednesday 3.00 pm – 4.00 pm (4-6 yrs) *Every 2nd & 4th Saturday 11.30 am – 12.00 pm (4-8 yrs) *Every 1st Friday 4.30 pm – 5.00 pm (4-8 yrs) (CH) Tuesdays, 7.30 pm – 8.00 pm (4-6 yrs) Thursdays, 3.00 pm – 3.30 pm (4-6 yrs) Every 1st Wednesday 3.00 pm – 3.30 pm (4-8 yrs) (CH) *Every 1st & 3rd Saturday 11.30 am – 12.00 pm (4-8 yrs) Bukit Panjang Public Library Every 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th Friday 3.00 pm – 3.30 pm (4-6 yrs) Every 1st Friday 3.00 pm – 3.30 pm (4-10 yrs) (CH) *Every 2nd & 3rd Sunday 2.30 pm – 3.00 pm (4-8 yrs) Clementi Public Library Thursdays, 3.00 pm – 3.30 pm (4-6 yrs) *Every 1st and 3rd Saturday 3.00 pm – 3.30 pm (4-8 yrs) Jurong Regional Library Saturdays, 12.30 pm – 1.00 pm (4-6 yrs) Every 1st Saturday 4.00 pm – 4.30 pm (4-10 yrs) (CH) Every 2nd Saturday 4.00 pm – 4.30 pm (4-10 yrs) (M) *Every 1st & 2nd Friday 4.00 pm – 4.30 pm (4-8 yrs) Bukit Merah Public Library Thursdays, 7.30 pm – 8.00 pm (4-6 yrs) Choa Chu Kang Public Library Wednesdays, 7.30 pm – 8.00 pm (4-6 yrs) *Every 2nd & 4th Saturday 11.30 am – 12.00 pm (4-8 yrs) Jurong West Public Library Saturdays, 3.30 pm – 4.00 pm (4-6 yrs) Queenstown Public Library Wednesdays, 7.30 pm – 8.00 pm (7-10 yrs) Saturdays, 10.30 am – 11.00 am (4-6 yrs) 19 Every 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th Wednesday 3.00 pm – 3.30 pm (4-6 yrs) Every 4th Wednesday 4.00 pm – 4.30 pm (4-8 yrs) (CH) Super Storytastic Super Storytastic is full of fun.
