Expert Series Workshops: Nurturing Your
Child’s Early Literacy Through Read-Alouds
6th August 2016, Saturday
3.00 pm – 4.00 pm
Jurong West Public Library, Programme Zone, Level 1
Do you know that a child's early experiences with books are closely linked
to her early literacy development? Young children who are exposed to
children's literature are like hungry caterpillars going out into the world
to look for food. The books that you have chosen to read to them every
day will lay a strong language foundation and prepare them for lifelong
learning. In this experiential workshop, you can pick up interesting
ways to create a deep love for reading together and to foster positive
language experiences for your child’s early literacy success. Learn how
Read-Alouds can make that happen and be a part of your child’s reading journey.
This programme is brought to you by the Early Childhood Development Agency and is
open to parents who have children aged 6 years and below. Seats are limited.

THE GOOD LITTLE BOOK
Author:
Kyo Maclear
Publisher: Toronto, Ontario: Tundra Books, 2015
Call No.: Junior Lending Picture Book English MAC
A boy is sent to the study to reflect on his bad behaviour and he gets transported to
a faraway land after picking up a book. Very soon, the book becomes his constant
companion and he falls in love with reading.
A title that transcends the boundaries of the story it contains, The Good Little Book
opens up with an illustrated note listing the people that the book used to belong to. This
message makes a full circle when at the very end of the story, the boy spots someone
else reading the book that he has lost.
16
A short and sweet story to share the joy of reading with, The Good Little Book may also
resonate with older readers with its theme of how one story can belong to many different
people.

they fail, they will never get to see their parents again and the crazed witch will take over

THE BEAR THAT WASN’T
Author:
Frank Tashlin
Publisher: New York: New York Review Books, 2010
Call No.: Junior Lending Simple Fiction English TAS
A seemingly simple fable that packs a subtle satirical punch, The Bear That Wasn’t begins
with a bear who wakes up to find himself in a factory built atop his cave while he was
hibernating. He is forced to work in the factory as nobody believes that he is a bear.
Confused about his own identity, the bear gradually accepts the general opinion of the
people around him only for nature to take its course.
A thought-provoking tale for more mature children, The Bear That Wasn’t is an exploration
of an individual's plight in a bureaucratic and mechanized world and how a lie repeated
often enough can become accepted as the truth.
