In order to support their life the patients need substitution of the renal function either by means of dialysis or by renal transplant. Dental and periodontal infection can jeopardize newly transplanted kidney. Periodontal pocket may act as foci for infections. Recent report suggested that periodontal disease should be viewed on the basis of the model of virus bacterial host immune interaction. Thus periodontal pathogen can potentiate bacteremia/viremia in immunosuppressed patients. High frequency of putative anaerobic pathogens in periodontal plaques and Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) might increase the chance of rejection of transplant .Immunosuppressant therapy in renal receipient could also affect the oral and periodontal health .The total health status and survivability after the transplantation increase manifold if there exists a dental focal infection . Very few studies reported oral health status in end stage renal disease and renal transplant patients. Moreover, a comparison of oral health status between preand post renal transplant patients has not been described until the present. AIM page 3 / 4 REF/2013/10/005844 CTRI Website URL - http://ctri.nic.in To assess the periodontal status before and after renal transplantation. OBJECTIVES To assess prevalence and incidence of periodontal disease and dental caries status before and after renal transplantation. To assess the IgM (Human cytomegalo virus) level before and after renal transplantation. To assess the presence of gingival overgrowth and oral mucosal lesions after renal transplantation. page 4 / 4 Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
