W e recognize that children
possess the perfect
growing conditions for learning new habits and attitudes that improve their world…and kids have a way of nurturing change in others.
Twice a year, our Kids for Cleaner
Ways newsletter shares real-life examples of kids across the state who are making positive changes and educating others in their schools and communities. In addition, our
Kid’s Website contains many fun and interactive puzzles, games, and crafts.
Tell them, they forget.
Show them, they’ll remember.
Involve them, they’ll understand.
The third book in our Open Your
Eyes to Litter series, Think Before
You Toss, focuses on learning what happens to the things we throw away and helping kids discover other options. The free series of booklets, available in both English and Spanish, were distributed to schools and groups throughout the state.
Our “Kids Make a Difference” Book
Covers were designed with an environmental bulletin board theme and featured pictures and articles of kids making a difference. Nearly
50,000 were delivered to Pennsylvania schools for the 2004 school year.
P A CleanWays’ core programs center around littering and illegal dumping prevention, education, adoptions, beautification, and proper disposal. PA CleanWays believes that by teaching by example, we can help change attitudes and practices. PA CleanWays has developed teaching and learning materials, for young and old alike, which show how litter and illegal dumping affect the world in which we live. We provide alternatives to harmful practices and promote the stewardship of our lands.

Planting
Ideas
J ust as weeding and watering are essential to a healthy garden,
PA CleanWays believes that
education is the key to a cleaner tomorrow. Our education materials provide the perfect nutrients needed to stimulate growth, curiosity, and awareness of environmental issues.
All materials are created in-house and address the PA Department of
Education’s Academic Standards. We are especially proud of having been granted Act 48 Approved Provider
Status. This status allows us to provide teachers with t r a i n i n g , materials, technical assistance, and the ongoing collaboration needed to successfully integrate some or all of our materials into their curriculum.
PA CleanWays, Inc., will begin providing workshops for teachers in Summer, 2005.
PACW staff, chapters and volunteers have also been actively teaching about the impact that littering and illegal dumping have on our environment. Public presentations were made at conferences, conventions, and public meetings throughout the state, including the
Governor’s Institute of Excellence.
Our message touched thousands of individuals and groups across the
Commonwealth.
I n 2003, PACW announced the
Sue Wiseman Scholarship
Program in honor of the founder of PA CleanWays. The annual $1,000 scholarship honors Pennsylvania youth who have demonstrated outstanding commitment and dedication to the environment. All projects submitted are initiated and carried out by the applicant and address issues of littering, illegal dumping, recycling, proper disposal, beautification, or education.
The Litter Hawk Youth Awards, introduced in 2003, present opportunites for in-state youth, ages 13 and under, to express their concerns about trash and litter through art, language and community projects.
Highly successful, the Litter Hawk
Youth Award program gives kids a chance to receive prizes for their work and grow their creative ideas for positive environmental change.
A teen component is underway for
Spring, 2005.

PA CleanWays, Inc., held several
Greenways cleanups throughout the state, in partnership with the Department of Conservation and Natural
Resources and the Pennsylvania
Greenways Program. One such cleanup was in Carbondale, Lackawanna County.
The site is an extension of the
Carbondale Heritage Gateway and
Racket Brook Greenway. Over four tons of trash were removed. The existing pathway was improved for development into a bike trail that follows the
Lackawanna River and which will become a part of the Lackawanna River Heritage
Trail.
Through DCNR’s Forest Lands Beautification Program, PA CleanWays held a series of cleanups on Little Tinicum Island, located in the Delaware River just south of Philadelphia. The island is home to 17 rare species of wetland birds, as well as many reptiles and amphibians. Volunteers were taken by boat over to the island where they spent several hours bagging trash to be loaded back on the boats and taken to a waiting dumpster on shore.

Y ou probably know places where trash chokes roads, clogs streams, and defaces forests. But you may not be as familiar with the legions of PA CleanWays volunteers, working to clean those roads, streams, and forests. They give freely of their time, energy, and financial support to remove trash, to educate people about how to dispose of trash properly, and to help keep
Pennsylvania clean.
We can all learn from the examples of individual citizens who see the opportunities in such challenges and go out of their way to get other people interested and involved in improving our environment.
W ith the help and support
of its chapters, affiliates
and volunteers, PA Clean-
Ways, Inc., has continued to make
Pennsylvania a cleaner place to live.
Since October 2002, over 160 illegal dump cleanups and 353 litter cleanups have removed approximately 2,600 tons of trash and over
40,000 tires from across the state.
In the past two years, over 5,600 volunteers have donated more than
22,000 hours to our mission of fighting illegal dumping and littering.
We could not have made such an impact on the environment without their energy and enthusiasm.
8
W hen PA CleanWays began working to eliminate illegal dumping and littering in 1990, no one could have anticipated how many tons of trash would be removed from our roads, forests, trails and greenways by hard-working, dedicated volunteers, donating their time and resources to clean up
Pennsylvania.
T he PA CleanWays, Inc., expanded Adoption Program has provided opportunities to adopt local areas (such as roads, waterways, trails, and greenways) and other public spaces (such as school grounds, neighborhoods, and parks) across Pennsylvania.
Since 1990, nearly 400 miles have been adopted and “cultivated.” The program has proven to be an effective way to address persistent dumping and chronic littering, as well as keeping cleaned areas trash-free.
P A CleanWays represents the collective strength of many groups and individuals, tackling a waste problem that might otherwise seem overwhelming.
The numbers below represent cleanups and events that took place from
October ‘02 through September ‘04.
T hrough 15 years at work in
Pennsylvania, PA CleanWays has found that a clean, beautiful area is less likely to be trashed.
Since 1993, PA CleanWays, Inc., has operated a tree bank that provides seedlings to its chapters for planting on public lands. Our Beautification Program receives the trees and potting supplies from the National
Tree Trust and other sources.
Over the past two years, more than
870 volunteers have spent nearly
3,800 hours potting, nurturing, and planting over 7,000 trees native to
Pennsylvania. The trees have helped to restore the natural beauty to adopted areas, illegal dump sites, and other public spaces throughout the
Commonwealth.
In recognition for planting nearly
20,000 trees in Pennsylvania since the program’s inception, PA
CleanWays, Inc., was invited to participate in the National Tree Trust’s
10-millionth tree planting ceremony in Harrisburg.
