parameter used to specify a resistor’s stability, and is used to depict the resistive element’s sensitivity
to temperature change due to ambient temperature variations.
A resistor’s TCR tells how much its value changes as its temperature changes. It is usually expressed
in ppm/°C (parts per million per degree Centigrade) units.

The tolerance of a resistor or a specific resistor in a network is also called the absolute tolerance.
Absolute TCR

The Temperature Coefficient of Resistance (TCR) is expressed as the change in resistance in ppm
(0.0001%) with each degree of change in temperature Celsius (°C). For example, a resistor with a TCR of
+100 ppm/°C will change +0.1% total over a 10-degree change and +1% total over a 100-degree change.

The TCR value quoted on specification sheets is typically quoted as being referenced at +25°C and is
the +25°C to +75°C slope of the TCR curve. TCR is typically not linear, but parabolic with temperature,
as illustrated by the accompanying fig-1. Often the circuit designer treats the TCR as being linear unless
very accurate measurements are needed. MIL STD 202 Method 304 is often referenced as a standard for
measuring TCR. The following formula expresses the rate of change in resistance value per 1 °C in a prescribed temperature range:
● TCR (ppm/°C) = (R - Ro) / Ro × 1 / (T - To) × 106
● R: Measured resistance (Ω) at T °C; Ro: Measured resistance (Ω) at To °C
● T: Measured test temperature (°C); To: Measured test temperature (°C)
In the context of a resistor network, this TCR value is called the absolute TCR in that it defines the TRC of
a specific resistor element.
Voltage Coefficient of Resistance (VCR)
The Voltage Coefficient is the change in resistance with applied voltage. This is entirely different and in
addition to the effects of self-heating when power is applied. A resistor with a VCR of 100 ppm/V will
change 0.1% over a 10 Volt change and 1% over a 100 Volt change. The rate of change in resistance value
per 1 Volt in the prescribed voltage range is expressed by the following formula:
● VCR (ppm/V) = (Ro - R) / Ro × 1 / ( Vo - V) × 106
● R: Measured resistance (Ω) at base voltage; V: Base voltage
● Ro: Measured resistance (Ω) at upper voltage; Vo: Upper voltage
Maximum Working Voltage
The maximum voltage applied continuously to a resistor or a resistor element. The maximum value of the
applicable voltage is the rated voltage at the critical resistance value or lower. If the circuit designs permits, the choice of a high ohmic value resistor or divider network will improve the resistor’s performance
because it will operate at lower power.
Power Rating
Power ratings are based on physical size, allowable change in resistance over life, thermal conductivity of
materials, insulating and resistive materials, and ambient operating conditions. For best results, employ the
largest physical size resistors at the less than their maximum rated temperature and power. Never use them
continuously at their maximum rating unless you are prepared to accept the maximum allowed life cycle
changes. If the circuit designs permits, the choice of a high ohmic value resistor or divider network will
minimize the power level and improve the resistor’s performance as it is operating at a lower power level.

Rated Power
Rated power is the maximum value of power (watts), which can be continuously applied to a resistor at
a rated ambient temperature. The basic mathematical relationship is Equation: Power (Watts) = (Current
(Amps))2 × Resistance (Ohm).
If the circuit designs permits, the choice of a high ohmic value resistor or divider network will minimize
the power level and improve the resistor’s performance because it is operating at a lower power and temperature level.

Rated Voltage
The maximum voltage applied continuously to a resistor at the rated ambient temperature. Rated voltage
is calculated from the following formula, but it must not exceed the maximum working voltage. Equation:
Rated Voltage (V) = (Rated Power (W) × Nominal Resistance Value (Ω))1/2
High voltage resistors often are potted or operated in oil as the arc over voltage, in air, is approximately
10,000 volts per inch. Ohmcraft’s resistors feature higher voltage ratings due to their high square count and
associated design characteristics.

The curve that describes the relationship between the resistors’s operating temperature and the maximum
value of continuous power permitted at that temperature. If the circuit designs permits, the choice of a high
ohmic value resistor or divider network will minimize this consideration and improve the resistor’s performance because it will operate at lower power.
Nominal Resistance
The adjective nominal (ultimately from Latin means “name”) generally relates to the concept of names,
and often to the difference between what something is in name (ideally or theoretically) and what it is in
reality. Thus it may refer to: a value that is used as the name for an actual value of resistance which is close
but not exactly the same. Please refer to Token Color Code & Nominal Resistance Table
Dielectric Withstanding Voltage
The rated voltage that can be applied to a designated point between the resistive element and the outer
coating, or the resistive element and the mounting surface, without causing dielectric breakdown.
Noise
Noise is an unwanted AC signal from within the resistor. Resistive noise can have a devastating effect on
low-level signals, charge amplifiers, high gain amplifiers, and other applications sensitive to noise. The
best approach is to use resistor types with low or minimal noise in applications that are sensitive to noise.

Introduction
Even in this digital age, a number of measurement and instrumentation applications rely on the accuracy of the value of one or more resistors. To guarantee the performance of the system, the designer
must understand what factors can affect the value of a precision resistor, and how the combined effect
of these factors may be evaluated.
There are essentially three types of error source to be understood.
● The first is measurement errors, which limit the precision with which the actual resistance
value can be known.
● Secondly, short-term change factors, reflecting uncertainty in the resistance value in a
customer’s recently assembled PCB.
● Thirdly, long-term change factors, reflecting value drift throughout the product’s life.
The combination of all these factors is termed total excursion.
Measurement Errors
Care is often needed when measuring precision resistors to keep the measurement uncertainty at a
negligible level compared to the resistance error. In addition to controlling the measurement
temperature and voltage, the connections may need to be four-terminal (Kelvin) and using screened
cables. If very high values are encountered, the use of guarding techniques may be needed to
eliminate surface leakage paths.
The instrument used must have sufficient resolution and traceable calibration to enable the
measurement uncertainty to be quantified. If measurement uncertainty cannot be made negligible,
it should be allowed for. For example, when checking the value of 0.01% tolerance resistor on a
meter with 0.001% (10ppm) measurement uncertainty, acceptance limits of 0.009% should be used.
Short-Term Change Factors
The most basic factors are tolerance and temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR). The tolerance
is simply the maximum percentage deviation of actual resistance value from nominal for resistors as
delivered, measured at a specified temperature (normally 25°C). In some cases the measurement
voltage is also specified.

The TCR specifies a limit on the variation of resistance with temperature. It is defined as the maximum average change in resistance value per degree centigrade between two defined temperatures, and expressed in
ppm/°C. Unless otherwise stated, the tolerance and TCR figures are positive or negative, ie, “0.1%” means
“±0.1%”.
When defining the temperature range for a resistor it is necessary to consider the internal ambient temperature, the effect of nearby heat-generating components and the temperature rise due to dissipation in the
resistor itself.
There are other factors that can affect resistance value measurements in some cases. For high-value and
high-voltage parts, the value obtained can depend on the measurement voltage used. The maximum error
from this source may be calculated from the voltage coefficient of resistance (VCR), which expresses this
change in ppm/V. VCR is always negative. Customers may specify measurement voltages which reflect
actual operating conditions to eliminate this error.
At the other extreme, very low-value resistors for current-sensing applications may generate thermal EMFs
at junctions of dissimilar metals when a temperature difference arises through self-heating, or some other
cause. This can be significant compared to the resistive volt drop and therefore generate an error.
Designing for thermal symmetry across the resistor can normally eliminate this error source.
TCR and VCR both produce reversible changes in resistance value; the resistance would recover to its
original value if measured at room temperature and standard measurement voltage. Other changes are
permanent, and the first of these to consider is value shifts due to processing by the PCB assembler. This
can be assessed by looking at the performance figure for resistance to solder heat in the datasheet.
Long-Term Change Factors
Datasheets often quote a number of figures for the performance data to enable the designer to assess the
maximum lifetime change in resistance value. In general, only one of these figures should be used – the
one that most closely reflects operating conditions.
The shelf life figure applies where loading is negligible and the environment is benign. The load figure
applies where power dissipation is the main factor, the long-term damp heat figure where humid
environments may be encountered.
In all these tests the majority of the value change happens within the period of the test, as the value will
tend to stabilize. For example, the 1,000-hour load figure is a good guide to the change predicted over a
longer period of service. For greater precision, mathematical models exist to extrapolate from tested
stability levels to long-term stability under application conditions.
Clearly initial calibration can be used to eliminate tolerance and soldering process induced errors.

The RE Series from Token Electronics is capped ultra precision metal-film resistors, as well as a complete
selection of MIL-PRF-55182 and GJB244A-2001 quality standards. Token offers a low-cost alternative to
traditional solutions for precision applications.
The RE is available in a resistance range of 10Ω ~ 10MΩ with a precision tolerance of ±0.01% and a temperature
coefficient of resistance (TCR) of ±2PPM/°C, although other tolerances and TCRs are available.
The resistance element in these devices is a precisely controlled thin film of metal alloy deposited on a high
quality alumina substrate. Plated caps are force-fitted before the assembly is trimmed using advanced laser
techniques to ensure excellent performance and low electrical noise. Leads are welded to the end caps prior to the
resistor being coated with epoxy.

Preview
Token RN series can be specified for all ultra precision electronics designs, as well as a complete selection of
MIL-PRF-55182 and GJB244A-2001 quality standards.
Production is strictly controlled and follows an extensive set of instructions established for reproducibility. A
homogeneous film of metal alloy is deposited on a high grade ceramic body and conditioned to achieve the
desired temperature stability.
Nickel plated steel terminations are firmly pressed on the metallised rods. A special laser is used to achieve the
target value by smoothly cutting in the resistive layer without damaging the ceramics. A further conditioning is
applied in order to stabilise the trimming result.
After a helical groove has been cut in the resistive layer, tinned connecting wires of electrolytic copper are
welded to the end-caps. The resistors are moulded into cylinder shape which provides electrical, mechanical, and
climatic protection.
Products equate Vishay, Ohmite, Caddock, IRC, EBG, Panasonic Precision Devices with more competitive price

The Precision Resistor Network technology provides a significant reduction of the resistive component’s
sensitivity to ambient temperature variations (TCR).
Designers can now guarantee a high degree of stability and accuracy in fixed-resistor applications using solutions
based on Token’s revolutionary Network technology. This technology allows customer orientated products,
designed to satisfy challenging and specific technical requirements.
Precision Network Resistors UPRND Series meets Lead (Pb)-free and RoHS compliant. Known for providing
design engineers with a comprehensive range of industrial-qualified resistive devices, Token Electronics has
further expanded its precision product capabilities in Serial UPRNS and Parellel UPRND Series.
Providing design engineers with an economical power resistor with high quality performance, Token Electronics
offers low cost industrial grade resistor networks, Parellel UPRND and Serial UPRNS Networks.
Token’s UPRND/UPRNS Series are assembled by EE/RE 1/10 series to form a stable, high precision resistor
networks. Characteristic of UPRND Series meet extreme low temperature coefficient.
Parellel UPRND Series equate IRC, EBG Precision Devices with fast delivery and more competitive price. For

Providing design engineers with an economical means of creating precision voltage dividers and set accurate
amplifier gains for a wide range of applications, Token Electronics is offering its series of precision thin-film
resistor networks.
Constructed with Token EE/RE 1/10 series to form a stable, high precision, and low temperature coefficient
network resistors. The networks are protected from moisture by a proprietary passivation material.
Customer can specify Tolerance and Temperature Coefficient range designed to satisfy challenging and specific
technical requirements. The resistance and TCR range makes these resistor networks ideal for a number of
applications, including test and measurement devices, commercial avionics and medical equipment or devices.
Other applications for the networks are instrumentation amplifiers, measurement bridge circuitry, data convertors
and precision analogue circuits.
The thin-film resistor networks also can be designed with custom schematics to meet individual customer
specifications. The networks provide excellent resistor precision and accuracy with resistor tolerances to ±0.01%.

In response to market demands for increased precision and
stability, Token Passive Components has expanded its AR
Series of nichrome thin-film chip resistors into three sectors,
Standard, High-Precision, and High-Power resistor.
Offering a wide value range with closer tolerances and low
TCR figures, Token offers a surface mount resistor with a
defined total contour that provides high stability under
temperature fluctuations of 5ppm/°C and with a tolerance
down to ± 0.01%.
The AR Series offering solutions to precision test and
measurement and voltage regulation across industrial, military and medical monitoring equipment markets
proposing superior tight tolerance, low TCR, and high power rating performance.
The range now also offers additional chip sizes. Key features of the enhanced AR Series include the availability
of all standard sizes from AR01(0201), AR02(0402), AR03(0603), AR05(0805), AR06(1206), AR13(1210),
AR10(2010), to AR12(2512).
The AR benefits from an impervious internal passivation layer applied in addition to the normal protective
coating. When constructing the AR Chip Series, a Ni/Cr thin-film material is selectively deposited on an alumina
substrate, together with Ni and Sn metallic contacts at each end layer plating. The AR chips are heat treated to
give the required temperature coefficient (TCR) and stability, and then a precisely controlled laser trim process
adjusts the resistance value.
The AR Series is available in taping packaging and is RoHS compliant and lead free.

Chip Resistors for High Humidity Precision Applications
Preview
Token Electronics has introduced a new line of anti-corrosive precision chip resistors that eliminates moisture
concerns associated with typical Nickel Chromium precision resistors. The PR Series is an ideal low-cost
alternative for expensive and hard-to-find tantalum nitride chip resistors.
A proprietary passivation layer is introduced between the nichrome resistive element with a superior alumina
substrate and the epoxy overcoat to ensure stable performance and long life in the harshest and wettest
environments.
In MIL-STD-202F method moisture testing, the PR Series
demonstrated excellent stability over time and no significant
shift in resistance after the 1000 hour life test. Applications require
operation in humid or high moisture environments or have
experienced corrosion problems with standard Nichrome thin film
resistors. For those applications, long term extended humidity testing
is essential before a part can be considered for usage on a design.
Designated the PR Series, it is available in industry standard 0402, 0603, 0805, 1206, 2010, to 2512 sizes and
has a resistance range from 10 Ω to 1M Ω, with tolerances tight to ± 0.10% and TCRs as low as 25ppm/°C. The
PR Series has an operating temperature range of -55°C to +155°C. The PR chip also offers outstanding electrical
stability and environmental stability performance that would be expected from a precision resistor.
The standard packaging is tape and reel in 4Kpc, 5Kpc, and 10Kpc quantities depending on part size. Most
sizes and resistance values are also offered in stock, making them an outstanding choice to support quick turn
shortages. Pricing varies with size, tolerance, and TCR and ranges in reel quantities.

Preview
As electronic design engineers have increased the power density of their equipment, the demand for smaller
surface mount single-chip circuit protection resistors has also increased. Token developed the PWR Series
resistors to provide an economical alternative to bulky molded wirewound components or multi-chip solutions
while saving both PC board space and manufacturing costs.
To meet the increased demand for the PWR Series resistors, Token has developed a series of pulse withstanding
chip resistors with improved power ratings in reduced surface mounted sizes. Designated the PWR Series, the
chip resistors deliver up to 50 percent higher power ratings than conventional surface mount resistors - up to
1.5W in a standard 2512 size chip.
Token is able to boost this power rating up to 50 percent through a
combination of proprietary power film materials and advanced
manufacturing processes. The PWR Series Resistors are available
in four standard sizes (0805, 1206, 2010 and 2512) with power
ratings from 0.125W to 1.5W, and maximum operating voltage
ratings for 100V to 500V. Resistance range is from 10 Ω to
20 MΩ, with tolerance tight to 0.5 percent. The PWR meets
restriction of hazardous substances RoHS directive and RoHS
compliance.
Along with the increased power ratings, the PWR Series resistors also feature high surge and high voltage
ratings, making them extremely stable in demanding surge and pulse environments. The PWR Series chip
resistors are specified for use in power supplies, circuit protection devices, portable battery chargers, motor
controls and line-powered equipment.

Application & Soldering Notes
Today’s electronic devices are becoming smaller and smaller. The requirement, in particular, for pulse withstand
capability is growing due to the need to protect sensitive modern electronic systems.
To meet this demand Token Electronics have designed a Pulse Withstanding Chip Resistor (PWR Series). The
enhanced performance of the chips is made possible by the precise use of the best resistance inks and a closely
controlled production process.
Application Notes:
 Applications vary from line protection for telecommunications to surge withstanding resistors for use in
circuit breakers. Details of a typical telecomm and power supply application are given below.
 Telephone lines can be subjected to a large range of voltage disturbances, many of which can damage
switching equipment. This has led to the need for circuit protection against both high voltage transients,
usually of short duration caused by lighting strikes and overloads of longer duration, due to direct
connection to mains power lines.
 These two faults are separated into primary and secondary protection.
- Primary protection handles the high voltage transients, and is usually located within the exchange.
- Secondary protection is usually built into the equipment to be protected, and deals with both
current and voltage limiting.
 Voltage limiting prevents damage to the equipment and shock hazards, and current limiting prevents
damage to wiring.
 To determine the suitability of a PWC series chip resistors for your application refer to the pulse
withstanding data as given lighting surge performance using both 1.2/50μs and 10/700μs pulse shapes.
Soldering Notes:
 Electrical connection to a ceramic substrate or to a printed circuit board can be made by reflow or wave
soldering of wrap-around terminations.
 Wrap-around terminations provide good leach properties and ensure reliable contact.
 Due to the robust construction, the PWR can be immersed in the solder bath for 30 seconds at 260°C.
 This enables the resistor to be mounted on one side of a printed circuit board and wire-leaded components
applied on the other side.
 PWR resistors themselves can operate at a maximum temperature of 155°C.
 For soldered resistors, the joint temperature should not exceed 110°C.
 This condition is met when the stated power levels at 70°C and recommended pad and trace areas
are used.
 Allowance should be made if smaller areas of copper are used.

The RFM speciality series of high frequency non-inductance MELF resistor from Token Electronics has
been extended to offer more than 10GHz operation, making the devices more suitable for high frequency RF
applications.
They are the perfect choice in high frequency circuit designs where the parasitic inductance of regular, helical
trimmed resistors can not be accepted, but where also pulse energies apply. Typical applications are in the fields
of telecommunication equipment and industrial electronics.
These high stability, non-inductance MELF resistors have a footprint very close to comparable chip resistors
but maintain their tolerance and deliver higher stability over a wider temperature range. Sizes range from 5.7 x
2.1mm for the RFM74 MELF-0207, through 3.45 x 1.3mm for the RFM73 MELF-0204 down to 2.2 x 1.3mm for
the RFM72 MELF-0102.
Production is strictly controlled and follows and extensive set of instructions established for reproducibility.
The groove on the metal alloy film of high grade ceramic rod is special designed to achieve non inductance. The
resistor elements are covered by a protective coating designed for mechanical, electrical and climatic protection.
The terminations are covered with a final pure tin plating for keeping perfect solderability. Four or five color
code rings designate the resistance value and tolerance in accordance with IEC 60062.

Providing design engineers with a family of resistors designed
specifically for surge and pulse applications, Token Electronics’
family of power MELF resistors feature extended performance
capability with ratings up to 3W.
Consisting of the RGM16M, RGM17M, RGM18M, RGM72,
RGM73 and RGM74 Series resistors, the devices in the power
MELF family all use Token’s Metal Glaze resistive element on
ceramic substrates. The RGM Anti-Surge Melf Series feature metal
caps fitted on the terminals of the cylindrical resistor body to give
the devices exceptional thermal compliance.
The resistors in the power MELF family provide excellent thermal compliance as well as a variety of surge
capabilities. The rugged RGM18M Series resistors are rated up to 3W and provide maximum thermal
compliance, while the RGM72 and RGM73 Series resistors offer as much as three times the surge rating of
standard resistors, which equates to up to 10 times the surge rating of similar-sized flat thick film chip
resistors. The range of capabilities allows customers to select the best device to provide stable performance in
harsh environment applications.
The Metal Glaze thick film element on the RGM Series devices is fired at 1000°C to a solid ceramic substrate.
The resistors feature power ratings of 0.125W, 0.25W, 0.5W, 1W, 2W and 3W at 70°C. Resistance values range
from 50kΩ ~ 2GΩ with standard tolerance to ±0.5%, maximum voltage of up to 10000V and TCRs ±100ppm/°C.
Maximum operating temperature for the resistors is +155°C.
The RGM MELF Series is a perfect fit when an anti-surge resistor is required. Other major applications of

metal chassis surface for maximum heat transfer. AH series are outstanding for their high power dissipation with

Lower hot spot ratings due to exclusive complete encapsulation of element within anodized aluminum body.
AH series high-performance welded construction throughout assures long stable load life with threaded heavy
stud axial-terminals.

Preview
The new BWW series moulded axial leaded wirewound resistors from Token use high-purity alumina ceramic
cores with wire winding which are spot welded by precision CNC machine tools to ensure total operational
consistency throughout.
Also, using advanced encapsulation die/mould technologies, this precision power resistors are encapsulated with
epoxy molding compound.
The BWW models possess a wide resistance value from 0.1Ω to 39KΩ and meets the stringent requirements of
MIL-R-93. Ayrton Perry noninductive windings are available on request. The BWW precision version has low
ohmic values for current sensing applications.
All versions are miniaturised for better power to dimension ratios and are available in 0.5W to 10W rated power
at 25°C. Tolerance is available in ±0.1%, ±0.25%, ±0.5%, ±1% and ±2% with TCR ±25PPM/°C, ±50PPM/°C
and ±150PPM/°C which makes them ideally suited for use in precision applications.
The BWW series is RoHS compliant with 100% Sn (lead free) coated terminals. To address your need for

Precision Wire-wound Resistors Application Notes:
● When being used in AC circuits, some wirewound structures give inductance ingredients or parasitic
capacity, so they may cause unusual phenomena such as oscillations etc. Quorum deviations of other components should be carefully taken into account for use.
● Application and Placement: Wire wound resistors use different gauges of wire as resistance elements.
Sometimes the gauge is extremely thin (finer than a strand of human hair) and very susceptible to breakage
in environments containing salts, ash, dust and corrosives. Avoid utilization in such environments.
● Do not install in dusty areas because the accumulation will cause shorts and poor conductance.

requiring high stability and precision. The KNP-R wire-wound has a low temperature coefficient and maintain a

Application Notes
Wire-wound Resistors Application Notes:
● When being used in AC circuits, some wirewound structures give inductance ingredients or parasitic
capacity, so they may cause unusual phenomena such as oscillations etc. Quorum deviations of other components should be carefully taken into account for use.
● Application and Placement: Wire wound resistors use different gauges of wire as resistance elements.
Sometimes the gauge is extremely thin (finer than a strand of human hair) and very susceptible to breakage
in environments containing salts, ash, dust and corrosives. Avoid utilization in such environments.
● Do not install in dusty areas because the accumulation will cause shorts and poor conductance.
