Modified Vehicle Engineering Body Builder Advisory Service: 1-800-635-5560 QUALIFIED VEHICLE MODIFIER PROGRAM QVM Bulletin No. Q-10 (Revised) Date: November 6, 1996 Retain This Bulletin in Your Technical Bulletins Binder for Future Reference SPLICING INTO THE STOP LAMP ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT ON ECONOLINE AND F-SERIES VEHICLES BACKGROUND QVM Bulletin #10 (issued 12/15/89) is being revised to provide information for the 1996 and 1997 Econoline and F-Series vehicles. As noted in the Ford Body Builders Layout Book and various QVM Manuals, caution should be used when splicing into the stop lamp circuit. The stop lamp switch and related wiring not only control the stop lamps, but also provide the brake on/off input to the electronic modules for the engine, transmission, speed control and anti-lock brake systems. Splicing into a location that interrupts the signals to these modules can interfere with their proper functioning, including: 1. Affecting EFI engine idle speed quality. 2. Preventing the transmission torque converter clutch from applying at throttle openings less than half throttle. 3. Deactivating anti-lock brake system operation. 4. Preventing the speed control from disengaging upon braking. SPLICING LOCATIONS Refer to Attachments 1, 2, and 3 of this bulletin for acceptable locations to splice into the stop lamp circuits for the 1996 and 1997 Econoline and F-Series vehicles, respectively. Refer to the Electrical and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual for details of connector pin-outs and locations. NOTE: Additional stop lamps must not exceed 6 amps (3 bulbs), yielding a total current draw not exceeding 10.4 amps (5 bulbs). Loads exceeding 10.4 amps can damage the stop lamp and/or turn signal switch. All turn signals will include hazard warning signals. Please ensure your suppliers are informed of this bulletin where applicable.
