November 13, 2015 www.isd12.org Volume 19, Issue 11
Dear Parents,
On Nov. 16 th , district, staff will share our new emergency procedures with students. School representatives and local police attended an A.L.I.C.E. training this summer to enhance our lock- down procedures. A.L.I.C.E. is a school safety program developed in 2000 to offer additional options to students and staff in dealing with an armed intruder situation. Nearly two million students have been trained in the A.L.I.C.E. protocol now being used in universities, colleges, hospitals, churches, corporations, and government offices. The letters A.L.I.C.E. are an acronym that stands for : Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. The five components form the basis of the program’s ageappropriate training.
On Monday, staff will read a script to students in order to help them understand our new procedures. (Kindergarten and 1st grade teachers will read the Preschool script.) You can also read the script(s) by following this link: https://www.isd12.org/parents/safety-and-security-centennial/ alice
The bottom line is that A.L.I.C.E. empowers staff in the building to take whatever action they feel is best to keep our students safe. We have designated rally points and parent pick-up locations in case there ever was an emergency situation. We truly hope we never have to use these procedures; and, I know the staff at Centerville would do everything possible to ensure your child’s safety.
Have a great weekend,

We have seen a lot of cases of pink eye recently.
Pink eye is a common, mild infection of the eye that is contagious. It can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection.
A child with pink eye will have discomfort, a scratchy feeling, itching, or pain in the eye. The white of the eye may appear pink or red. The child’s eye will have a discharge. If you suspect your child has pink eye, please contact your health care provider for diagnosis and treatment. If your child has a bacterial infection, he or she must be kept at home and treated with an antibiotic for 24 hours before returning to school.
Proper hand washing is important to prevent transmission of pink eye. Other recommendations include: Avoid touching an infected person’s eye; avoid touching tissues or gauzes that have been in contact with the person’s eye; and do not use washcloths or other personal items that have been in contact with the infected person.

Did you forget to turn your badge in to the office after you volunteered? We are missing a few badges. If you have accidentally brought one home, would you please send it back to school with your child? Using the badges vs. stickers will save us money in the long run. However, we do need to make sure we don’t lose them.
Thanks for your help!
Come to the Tuesday, November 17, CPTA meeting in the media center at 6:30 pm to vote on funding requests. All are welcome, but only members may vote. You can sign up to be a member at the meeting. Complimentary childcare is available!
There have been several cases of head lice throughout the school. The parents of infected kids have been notified and the children are being treated. Treated cases are no longer infectious. However, lice does spread easily. We recommend that you check your child’s head and all other household members, so these parasites can be detected early and controlled. If lice are detected, your child will need to stay home until treatment has been completed and no live lice are seen. Upon returning to school, your child will need to be checked by the school nurse before returning to class. Thank you for your cooperation in helping minimize the spread of head lice. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact the health office at 763-792-5826.
Centennial School District has three remaining 2-hour late starts scheduled for the 2015-2016 school year. The next late start date is Tuesday, November 17.
Students in grades K-12 will report two hours later than their scheduled start time. Buses will run two hours late. Students may enter the building at 11:05 am. Class begins at 11:15 am. No breakfast will be served this day (unless your student attends morning Kids Club).
Do you have a fifth grader this year? Would you be interested in being on the planning committee? If interested, please contact
Heather O’Hearn for more information. jpohearn@comcast.net
