WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO
Hamilton Marine is the largest ship’s chandlery (marine store) in New England. It was started
more than thirty years ago in Wayne and Loraine Hamilton’s Searsport garage. Hamilton Marine now has grown to five locations throughout the state of Maine, with stores in Searsport,
Portland, Rockland, Southwest Harbor, and Jonesport. We sell to boat builders, recreational
boaters, commercial fishermen, divers, and industrial mariners.
Over 100 people are employed among the five stores. Our oldest employee is 80 and our
youngest is 17. Dress is casual, the atmosphere is friendly and family-like, and the work is diversified and demanding. Customers, who share our interest in boats and things marine, can
shop in our stores, from our 376-page catalog, and through our Internet Store. Our catalog
is sent all over the world. We receive postcards from oceans far away and pictures of proud
builders launching their new boats built with supplies bought from Hamilton Marine.
Generally speaking, job duties fall within four departments: Walk-in Store, Purchasing, Sales
& Marketing, and Support Operations. However, every employee is expected to work in any
department as required and at other Hamilton Marine locations on a temporary basis.
EMPLOYEE BENEFITS
Hamilton Marine offers excellent benefits to full-time employees. Health insurance is
available for the employee with a low premium cost, and eligible employees can enroll
in a Health Savings Account to cover qualified health related expenses; the employee
can contribute pretax dollars to the account and the company also makes weekly
contributions. The company pays dental and long-term disability insurance premiums for
the employee. a 401K-retirement plan, to which both the employee and employer
contribute, is in effect after approximately one year. there are six paid holidays
annually, and paid time off, which increase with time of service. Hamilton Marine
employees may purchase goods from the company at a special employee discount.
