TRAINER DEVELOPMENT COURSE The Trainer Development Course (TDC) is an in-service course for experienced teachers who want to make the transition from teacher to trainer, as well as teacher trainers, who can attend it as a refresher course. Learning outcomes On successful completion of the course, participants will be able to: identify skills which are transferable from teaching to training identify and describe learning styles relate learning styles to activity types and tasks define motivation and relate it to training contexts relate teacher levels of experience to issues and challenges in delivering training analyse problems and provide solutions to enable effective presentation of input and activities provide constructive feedback to trainees evaluate training materials for trainees of different experiential levels establish a checklist of evaluation criteria express valid, measurable learning outcomes deliver a teacher training activity to peers provide constructive feedback to fellow participants on micro-training activities create and deliver motivating and effective workshops. The course comprises seven workshops. The introductory workshop focuses on teaching and training roles, and transferable skills. Subsequent workshops explore learning styles, motivation, feedback, materials evaluation, and practical delivery issues. The activities include group discussion, analysis, presentations, questionnaires and games. Activities can be adapted for participants to use both in teaching and teacher training contexts. The total duration of the course for a group of 10 trainees is approximately 45 hours (35 hours of workshops and training preparation activities and about 10 hours of trainees’ presentations including feedback and discussion). Depending on the size of the group, the duration of the course may vary. Workshops Description I INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP – approximately 4 hours Learning outcomes: By the end of this session participants will be able to: • identify and discuss their beliefs about teaching and learning • identify and discuss personal approaches and teaching styles • distinguish the differences between teaching and teacher training • define teaching and training roles • identify skills which are transferable from teaching to training • self-evaluate their people and planning skills II UNDERSTANDING YOUR TRAINEES – approximately 5 hours Learning outcomes: By the end of this session participants will be able to: • identify key factors in learning and development • design a template for trainee profiles • identify and describe learning styles • relate learning styles to activity types and tasks • define motivation and relate training contexts to Maslow’s pyramid of needs • reflect on activities and learning styles and the implications for motivation. III ISSUES AND CHALLENGES - approximately 3 hours Learning outcomes: By the end of this session, participants will be able to: • assess activities from British Council courses • relate teacher levels of experience to issues and challenges in delivering British Council courses • identify solutions to potential problems in carrying out communicative activities • reflect on the learning points of the workshop IV MAKING WORKSHOPS EFFECTIVE - approximately 5 hours Learning outcomes: By the end of this session participants will be able to: • identify what factors need to be in place in order to run effective workshops • analyse problems and provide solutions to enable effective presentation of input and activities • specify the advantages of and rationale for collaborative work • assess the advantages and disadvantages of techniques for setting up pairs and groups • discuss and rank ideas for building rapport with trainees • create a diagram showing the effects of constructive feedback • distinguish constructive and negative feedback expressions • establish ways of providing effective support to trainees during workshops • reflect on and share learning on aspects of the session. V PREPARING FOR TRAINING - approximately 4 hours Learning outcomes: By the end of this session participants will be able to: • evaluate training materials for trainees of different experiential levels • establish a checklist of evaluation criteria • express valid, measurable learning outcomes • create feedback criteria for micro training • evaluate and prepare materials for delivering micro training. VI MICRO TRAINING - approximately 4 hours Learning outcomes: By the end of this session participants will be able to: • deliver a teacher training activity to peers • provide constructive, focused feedback to fellow participants on micro training activities • reflect on and assess micro training as a teacher development tool. VII WORKSHOP DESIGN - approximately 10 hours ( 2-3 days) Learning outcomes: By the end of the workshop participants will be able to: • create and deliver motivating and effective workshops • describe what a workshop is and what it involves • select techniques for getting to know participants in different workshop contexts • distinguish the difference between trainer aims, learning outcomes and workshop outputs • write SMART learning outcomes for a workshop • assess workshops. TRAINEES’ WORKSHOPS - approximately 10 hours ( 3 days) Each trainee will have a chance to prepare and deliver a 50 minute workshop, which will be followed by feedback and discussion.
