The basis of the range are modular

and rolled contacts. The universal screw
connections distinguish themselves through
high reliability, low contact resistances and

The VARIOCON housing is available in
different versions: plastic housings made of
impact-resistant polyamide, metal housings
made of die-cast zinc with a polyester
coating as well as metal housings with a
conductive EMC nickel surface. The rugged
screw locking protects connectors against
unintentional opening and mechanical
disturbances such as shocks and vibrations.

VARIOCON
VARIOCON is suitable for use in devices,
terminal boxes and control cabinets.
As a result of its modular design and the
variety of contact inserts from D-SUB to
FO and on to power connections, the range
offers nearly unlimited application
possibilities.
The basis of the range are modular
contact inserts with screw and PCB
connection, as well as permanent contact
inserts with crimp connection for turned
and rolled contacts. The variable structure
allows the connector to be put together
optimally, and thus at low cost, to suit the
individual application.
The housing for direct panel mounting is
available in different versions: plastic
housings made of tough polyamide, metal
housings made of die-cast zinc with a
polyester coating as well as metal housings
with a conductive EMC nickel surface.

Modular contact inserts
VARIOCON Modular allows power and
signal transmission to be combined in one
connector.
The contact system is based on the
proven COMBICON connection method
with tension sleeve principle and coding
possibility. The panel mounting side can be
supplied with screw connection or
alternatively with direct PCB connection.
The connection capacity ranges from
4-pos. / 70 A / 690 V to 40-pos. / 10 A / 160 V
In addition, fiber optics modules are
available for data transmission.

Crimp contact carriers
The crimp contact carriers are available as
male or female contact carriers and fulfill
the requirements for high-position plug
connections.
Turned and rolled crimp contacts from
the proven HEAVYCON D-series
(EN 175301-801) are available for the
15, 30, 50 and 65-position crimp contact
carriers plus two capacitive PE connections
each.
All advantages of the crimp system, such
as machine preassembly or partial assembly,
can be used with VARIOCON-Crimp.

Sleeve housings and supporting base elements
The sleeve housings are available in three space, can be accessed easily from above,
resists vibration and fulfills the
housing versions:

The panel mounting plug connector
consists of the modular mounting contact
inserts, the mounting flanges and the panel
mounting frame. The contact inserts are
available with different numbers of positions
and different rated electrical data. They can
be snapped together in any order. They are
always touch proof, so that the panel
mounting plug connector and the sleeve
plug connector can be conductive.
Mounting:
– Snap in the contact insert modules in the
desired order
– Mount the panel mounting flanges as
shown
– Position the contact insert with panel
mounting flanges in the panel cutout from
the inside of the device
– Snap the panel mounting frame onto the
contact insert from the outside of the
device
– Screw the panel mounting frame together
with the panel mounting flanges
On the panel mounting frame, each
module position is labeled from A-E. This
makes each position clearly identifiable.
The panel mounting plug connector can
either be mounted directly on the device
wall as a panel feed-through without a panel
mounting base or in a VARIOCON
supporting base element.
Contact inserts with PCB connection are
available for parallel or right-angled
arrangement of the PCB to the device wall.
The EMC shroud provides an effective
solution for creating an EMC-suitable plug
connection to a panel cutout in which only
the cutting edge itself is conductive, but the
device wall is painted, for example. It is
simply snapped in under the panel mounting
frame, thereby making contact over a large
area between the sleeve housing and the
device wall. With the EMC supporting base
elements, the EMC shroud can be
dispensed with, because the EMC sleeve
housings always have a conductive EMC
sealing.
The sleeve connectors consist of the
modular sleeve contact inserts and the
sleeve frame. They are designed to be
compatible with the panel mounting
connector.
The contact insert modules are snapped
into the sleeve frame and screwed into the
sleeve housing after conductor assembly.
The angled cable outlet makes it easy to
mount the compact VARIOCON
connector and allows straight as well as
lateral cable outlets. Alternatively, Pg half or
metric full screw connections are available
in plastic, nickel-plated brass or EMCshielded.
The power contact inserts and sleeve
frames already form a unit for space
reasons. The removable marking label is the
obvious choice for labeling the VARIOCON
housings.
The positions of each contact insert
module with screw connection are
continuously labeled with 1 or 5 to n.

In the simplest case, the panel mounting
plug connector only consists of the contact
insert. This is directly screwed onto the
device wall using the supplied ST-2,9 screws.
The prerequisite for this, however, is a
sturdy device wall into which the medium
M4 locking thread for the sleeve housing can
also be cut.
If a locking thread cannot be cut, there are
2 mm thick V2A panel mounting flanges that
can be mounted from the inside of the device.
The panel mounting plug connector can
either be mounted efficiently as a panel
feed-through without a panel mounting
base or in a VARIOCON supporting base
element. The current-carrying female
contact inserts can be used in panel
mounting plug connectors as well as in
sleeve connectors. In the case of EMC panel
feed-throughs, the device wall must always
remain conductive with the crimp contact
inserts. The sealing area must not be
painted. The EMC sleeve housings always
have a conductive EMC seal.
The CK 1,6... crimp contacts, which are also
used in the HEAVYCON D series, are available
in a punched-rolled and a solid-turned version
with a silver or gold-plated surface for
conductors from 0.14 to 1.5 mm2.
The sleeve connector consists of the
crimp contact insert and the sleeve housing.

mount the compact VARIOCON plug
connector and allows straight as well as
lateral cable outlets. Alternatively, Pg half or
metric full screw connections are available
in plastic, nickel-plated brass or EMCshielded.
In order to avoid mismating several
identical VARIOCON-Crimp plugs, special
coding pins are available for the panel
mounting and sleeve side. The removable
marking label is the obvious choice for
labeling the VARIOCON housings.

The modular contact inserts are based on
the tried-and-tested COMBICON
technology. They are available with the
screw connection method and on the
mounting side also as a solder-in version.
With the keying profiles CP-HCC 4 the
power inserts can be keyed to prevent
confusion of similar plug connectors. In case
of sleeve inserts VC-TFS..., the
corresponding opposite coding bar must be
cut off flush.
The modular high current inserts fit in all
the VARIOCON sleeve housings.
Combinations with any 1 and 2 modules are
possible as an option. The standard frames
and mounting flanges are used on the
mounting side.
High current panel mounting inserts
VC-AMS.... cannot be used in the VC flushmounting housings for space reasons.
Special coupling housings or box mounting
bases are available upon request.
Note:
The hinged cover must be closed after
assembly to maintain insulation data.
VARIOCON contact insert modules
meet the requirements of DIN EN 61984
(plug connectors without switching
capacity) and should therefore be operated
only under no load condition.
All inserts are touch proof and in
accordance with DIN EN 60529 and fulfill
the requirements of the BGV A2 accident
prevention regulations.
For the contact inserts with screw
connection, there is an insertion bridge
EB3-10/ST (order no. 5020823).

Description
The modular contact inserts are based on
the tried-and-tested COMBICON
technology. They are available with the
screw connection method and can also be
supplied as a solder-in version on the device
side.
The sleeve or panel mounting contact
inserts are snapped into the corresponding
frame and are then simple to assemble and
mount. The modules are easy to unsnap
with a screwdriver.
All contact inserts can be equipped with
coding profiles. This rules out the possibility
of mixing up several plug connectors.
The modules are numbered consecutively.
Note:
VARIOCON contact inserts meet the
requirements of DIN EN 61984
(connectors without switching capacity)
and should therefore be operated only
under no load condition.

Sleeve frame
Description
Sleeve frames are available for 2 to 5
contact insert modules. Each module
position is labeled from A-E.
The contact insert modules are snapped
into the sleeve frame. The frame is then
screwed together with the housing.
Two sleeve frame versions are available
for each size, both with and without PE
connection.
Advantages:
– The PE connection to the metal housing
is particularly space-saving
– Any position can serve as a PE contact
Notes:
VC contact inserts meet the
requirements of DIN EN 61984, i.e.
connectors without switching capacity, and
should therefore be operated only under no
load condition.
Leading PE contact on request.

Assembly instructions:
Metal sleeves must be grounded in case of
operating voltages > 42 V. The
VC-TR...M-PEA frame has a PE sheet with a
PE connection. Strip the PE conductor by
25 mm and cut the insulation at 50 mm.
Push the cut insulation forward by 15 mm.
Connect the PE conductor to the contact
of the module and clamp it to the PE sheet
under the PE screw (see the photo).

Panel mounting frame
Description
Two mounting flanges (VC-AF) are
required for securing the panel mounting
frame on the mounting panel. They connect
the panel mounting frame with the device
wall, and, if present, the printed circuit
board.
In case of an EMC shielded plug
connection, the shield adapter
VC-AR...EMV is necessary if contacting is
only possible on the cutting surface of the
panel cutout. The housing seal is
conductive.
If VARIOCON panel mounting frames are
mounted on electrically conductive
supporting base elements and the nominal
voltage is > 42 V, the VARIOCON panel
mounting frames with PE (VC-AR...M-PEA)
must be used.

female contacts can be used on both the
connector and device sides.
The contact carriers additionally have two
pre-mating protective ground contacts. The
connection data is 250 V / 10 A and is
equivalent to that of the HEAVYCON D
series. Both turned and rolled contacts can
be used in the contact carriers. The type of
contacts used fulfill the requirements of
IEC 60352/ DIN EN 60352.

Description
The new VARIOCON sleeve housing is
made of salt water resistant aluminum diecast and has a calendered and EMCcompatible surface.
There is no need for a panel mounting
base with standard panel feed-throughs.
VARIOCON sleeve housings form a seal
directly on the mounting panel using two
locking screws. This screw locking saves
space, can be easily accessed from above,
resists vibration and fulfills the
requirements of higher degrees of
protection up to IP69K owing to the rugged
grommet.
Grommets are conductive for EMC
applications. The mounting panel must also
be conductive for this.
The locking screws are equipped with
either a cylinder or knurled head and can be
screwed tight or unscrewed with a standard
Philips screwdriver or by hand (no tools).
The angled cable outlet means the cable
can be routed as desired, from the side and
straight. The new housings have extended
wiring space for high-position and power
contact inserts and offer space for M32
cable glands. Housings with two cable inlets
are also available now.

Description
The VARIOCON sleeve housing is
available in four different designs, each
available in either plastic, powder-coated
metal or EMC-coated metal.
There is no need for a panel mounting
base with standard panel feed-throughs.
VARIOCON sleeve housings form a seal
directly on the mounting panel using two
locking screws. This locking method saves
space, can be easily accessed from above,
resists vibration and fulfills the
requirements of a high degree of protection.
The screws are equipped with either a
cylindrical or knurled head and can be
screwed tight or unscrewed with a standard
Philips screwdriver or by hand (no tools).
The shape of the housing has a userfriendly design and is fitted with a large
marking label. The angled cable exit means
the cable can be routed as desired, from the
side and straight.

Panel mounting base, with open floor,
incl. seal and M3 screws for crimp inserts
Description
Supporting base element is the collective
term for panel mounting base, box
mounting base and coupling housings.
These elements are compatible with the
sleeve housings of plastic, metal and EMC
series and are available in four designs for
2 to 5 modules or for crimp inserts with 15
to 65 positions.
The supporting base elements are made
of zinc die-cast and the surface is either
powder-coated or EMC metal-plated.
When locked, the supporting base elements
fulfill the requirements of a high degree of
protection.
Applications:
– The panel mounting bases are designed
for panel feed-throughs and create space
in the interior of the device
– Box mounting elements make it possible
for the pluggable wiring to be directly on
the device panel
– Coupling housings are suitable for freehanging connections where jumpering is
necessary in the field
