This course is directed to provide a fundamental knowledge in basic human communication processes from a neurological, acoustic, and linguistic perspective. COURSE OBJECTIVES ASHA Standards −ASHA Standards for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in SpeechLanguage Pathology consist of eight standards related to academic and clinical training as well as continuing education for individuals who wish to obtain/maintain certification. Exams will be reviewed and students will be required to correct any incorrect responses, but this procedure will not alter grades. Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: • Distinguish the different levels of speech production • Analyze the anatomy and physiology of respiration, phonation and articulation • Analyze the auditory system from the cochlea to the brain • Describe the basic concepts concerning the physics of sound. • Describe the productions of speech as an acoustic stimulus. • • • • Analyze the basic principles underlying speech production Analyze the basic principles underlying speech perception. Discuss the classic literature in the areas of speech perception and speech production Distinguish the different theories of speech perception TOPICAL OUTLINE August 22.
