CORPORATE PROFILE
“Welcome to Southern Cross Hospitals Limited. We operate
New Zealand’s largest network of private surgical hospitals, and
our focus is on delivering quality care and value for money.
We play a key role in improving the health of New Zealanders, by
providing access to quality elective surgical services for more than
65,000 people each year. This represents about one third of the
private elective surgery market in New Zealand, across a wide range
of medical specialties.
Our hospital network spans the length and breadth of New Zealand
and consists of nine wholly-owned hospitals, as well as nine
innovative joint venture hospitals and specialist facilities operated in
partnership with leading medical specialists.
Our business operates on a not-for-profit basis, and is owned by
the Southern Cross Health Trust.
Although we operate independently, with a separate Board of
Directors, we make up part of the Southern Cross Healthcare Group
of businesses that include Health Insurance, Primary Care, Travel
Insurance and Southern Cross Pet Insurance.
The Southern Cross Healthcare Group reaches more than one
million New Zealanders each year, making it one of the country’s most
well known and trusted healthcare brands. Its range of products and
services, combined with a not-for-profit focus and significant size and
experience, gives Southern Cross a unique and important role in the
New Zealand health sector.
Since we were established in 1979, Southern Cross Hospitals has
grown in both size and scope of services offered. We’re passionate
about achieving our vision: to provide a growing number of New
Zealanders with high quality and affordable private hospital care.”

What we do
By bringing together specialist capabilities and high-performing nursing teams, Southern Cross Hospitals
provides the infrastructure for private elective surgery to be performed throughout the country. These
‘centres of expertise’ include modern and well-equipped operating theatres (including digital and hybrid
theatres in some centres), consulting suites, specialist consulting centres, and imaging facilities.
Over 1,000 surgeons and anaesthetists use these hospital facilities in their private practice. While Southern
Cross Hospitals does not employ doctors directly, all medical specialists complete a credentialling process
before admitting patients to one of our hospitals.
Collectively, our hospitals employ around 700 Registered Nurses as well as several hundred other healthcare
professionals, and administrative and support staff. Our Auckland-based National Office provides strategic and
business management support across a range of areas including clinical safety and quality, procurement,
accounting and finance, facilities management, human resources, payroll, business development,
marketing and IT support.
Our aim is to help specialists deliver elective surgical services to as many regions as possible, so our hospitals
are strategically spread from Auckland in the north, to Invercargill in the south.
The majority of our patients are referred to medical specialists by their GPs. Our patients include Southern
Cross Health Society members, policyholders from other insurance companies, self-funding patients, and
patients whose surgery is funded under the public system. We contract with public healthcare funders including
New Zealand’s Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) and New Zealand’s District Health Boards.

A focus on people, not profits
Our business philosophy is based on our not-for-profit principles.
This means we’re focused on the needs of our patients and employees, not stock market
investors or offshore owners. Surpluses are invested in expanding and upgrading medical
facilities and services for our patients, and developing our employees.
This allows us to balance our twin goals – to provide superb facilities offering the
highest standards of care, while also making our services as affordable and
accessible as possible.
Southern Cross Hospitals aims to be an ‘employer of choice’, by offering
world-class clinical environments and staff support. We are committed to
developing New Zealand’s surgical nursing workforce through our Nursing
Council accredited professional development and recognition programme.
We also actively promote blended learning, supported by our e-learning
website and related education programmes.
On behalf of our patients, we champion the delivery of high-quality
healthcare that represents value for money. In line with this, we work
with insurance companies and other funding organisations to
develop fixed price arrangements for common surgical procedures.
Recognising that our patients are
individuals - with individual needs.
It’s just another way we’re
treating you well

Working in partnership with the public health sector is an important aspect of our role, and we value the opportunity to provide
resources and support. Southern Cross Hospitals provides elective surgery to thousands of patients each year under the
government’s Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) scheme, as well as contracting to regional District Health Boards.
Our efforts to promote effective collaboration with the public sector help us to further achieve our vision and to make a positive
difference to the health and well being of all New Zealanders.
Investing in technology
Southern Cross Hospitals invests in new technologies and facilities to respond to the increasing complexity of medical
procedures, and the evolving needs of our patients. For more information visit www.southerncrosshospitals.co.nz
NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN THEATRES
Southern Cross Hospitals has installed one of the most
advanced and flexible hybrid theatre facilities in the private
sector, in Christchurch. The new hybrid system allows for
pre- and post-operative imaging to be carried out in the
theatre, reducing the need to transfer the patient to another
room for diagnostics. As well as allowing systems to be
positioned as the surgical teams require - allowing more
space for clinicians, less interference with anaesthesia
set-ups, and better patient access for the surgical teams.
Our hospital in Invercargill was the first of our facilities to
install a new ‘Black Diamond Video’ system. The BDV
technology integrates the digital information captured in
the operating room, and allows surgeons and theatre staff
to call it up and view it using touch-screen controls and
leading edge technologies. It provides surgeons with an
enhanced view of patient anatomy, which is particularly
helpful with minimally invasive techniques.
ROBOTICALLY-ASSISTED SURGICAL SYSTEMS
Surgeons performing prostate surgery and gynaecological
procedures at Southern Cross Hospital in Christchurch were
some of the first in the country to make use of the ‘da Vinci
robot’ for robotically-assisted surgery. Our hospital has
upgraded the system (during 2013) to feature the new da Vinci®
Si robotic system. The technology not only enables a range
of surgical procedures to be performed through very small
incisions but also offers improved vision optics and surgeon
controls which enable a wider range of operations.
The robotically-assisted surgical techniques,
known as minimally invasive surgery, offer the potential to
reduce pain and recovery times for patients while
enhancing the surgeon’s already precise skills.
HARNESSING THE POWER OF 3D
A state-of-the-art 3D HD surgical video system installed at Southern
Cross’ Brightside Hospital in Auckland has the ability to transform the
way laparoscopic surgeries are carried out and was the first of its kind to
be commissioned in New Zealand.
This system essentially provides a realistic view of the tissue
being worked on, leading to increased precision and accuracy and
consequently may reduce the amount of time a patient spends under
general anaesthesia and in hospital.
