Prerequisite Course Work The prerequisite course work is not available at the Anschutz Medical Campus, but may be taken at a regionally accredited college or university. There is a 10 Year Time Limit on Prerequisites/Electives. Prerequisites (and electives for applicants without a bachelor’s degree) must be no older than 10 years at the time of application. A waiver of this policy may be requested in writing. Courses must also have grades of C (not C-) or better. Applicants with a BA/BS degree: • Degree must be conferred by end of Spring term for Fall admission; the end of Summer for Spring admission; the end of Fall for Summer admission. • Prerequisite courses required are anatomy, physiology, microbiology and statistics Applicants without a BA/BS degree: • All 16 prerequisites below are required *Anatomy An introductory course dealing with basic human anatomy including the nervous system. Major focus should not be on kinesiology; all body systems must be included. Laboratory is recommended. Combined anatomy and physiology courses will be accepted with a minimum of six semester hours. *Physiology A course which focuses on basic human physiology including cells, homeostatic mechanisms, pH, fluids and electrolytes, and the interrelations between structure and function as well as among the various organ systems. Laboratory is recommended. Combined anatomy and physiology courses will be accepted with a minimum of six semester hours. *Microbiology An introductory course related to biology and classification of microorganisms, their interrelationship with other bacteria, animals and man. Content should include viruses, rickettsia, protozoans, parasites. Laboratory is recommended. *Statistics An introductory course in any discipline which covers basic statistical concepts: standard deviation, correlation, analysis of variance, statistical distribution, etc. Science Two additional (2) courses in any of the following: biology, chemistry, biochemistry, physics, geology, zoology or astronomy. One of these 2 course must include a laboratory experience. Applicants who did not complete a high school chemistry course are encouraged to select chemistry as one these sciences. College Algebra A course which covers polynomials; rational, exponential, and logarithm functions; and systems of equations/inequalities. General Sociology A general survey course examining the basic concepts, theories, and principles of sociology. General Psychology A general survey course of major topics in the field of psychology, sensory processes, human development, personality development, biological bases of behavior. Developmental Psychology A course covering the life span of individual and family developmental psychology. Content should include from birth to death; empirical and theoretical issues of the human life cycle family unit; developmental tasks and behaviors associated with maturation. Note: Two courses may be required to obtain this content. Cultural Anthropology or Multicultural Studies A course in one of these areas. (Example: Women’s, Chicano or African American Studies). English Composition A non-remedial, second semester composition course that includes research paper writing, research strategies and conventions of documentation. Philosophy Any course in philosophy. Creative Arts A non-performance course in fine arts, music, dance, theatre, literature, photography, film, or other creative arts. A third or fourth level language course with proof of a literature component is also acceptable. Nutrition One course in human nutrition. Political science, history or macroeconomics Any course in one of these areas. *Only these 4 prerequisites are required if applicant has bachelor’s degree. 6/2009 1 Note: • Completion of Prerequisites: It is recommended that all 60 prerequisite/elective credits be completed before the requested start date. Applicants may also be admitted with 2 prerequisite/elective courses that are planned for completion concurrently within the first year of the RN-BS program if their overall GPA is 3.00 or better. When applying online, it is suggested that you print off this form and complete it ahead of time to insure accuracy. Use the transcripts from each original school to complete this form; do NOT rely on memory. Incomplete or inaccurate forms will require the submission of an entirely new form. Complete all parts of the form, including specific information for courses that are in progress or planned for a future semester. Without this detail, the form will be returned for complete information. Include the departmental abbreviation and course number; we do not need section numbers or call numbers (use the information that is on the transcript). e.g. ENG 102 All data must be accurate and exactly as stated on the transcript. Do not enter an expected grade for a course in progress. Do not use the course number for a course transferred from one school to another. Use the information on each original transcript.
