MATH 1000 Algebra for College Students or any of its equivalents depending on student placement – (MATH 1001/1002 or MATH 1003/1004) 2. ENG 1030 College Composition or any of its equivalents (ENG 1030/1032 or ENG 1033/1034) with a minimum grade of C 3. CS 0412 Intro to Academic Reading if required by placement testing Academic Integrity: Students are responsible to become familiar with, and will be held accountable for, the information on the following Web sites: 1. Academic Integrity at www.kean.edu/forms/AcademicIntegrity.pdf or the Web site for The Guide at www.kean.edu/publications/TheGuide2007.pdf. 2. Student Code of Conduct at www.kean.edu/~conduct or the Web site for The Guide at www.kean.edu/publications/TheGuide2007.pdf Course Description: Living forms, their interdependencies, and their adjustments to the environment. Fundamentals of structure and function in respiration, digestion, circulation, excretion, control systems, reproduction, heredity, and variation of biological form through time. General education breadth course. Required Texts and Supplies: Essentials of Biology, 1st edition, Sylvia S. Mader, MaGraw-Hill Principles of Biology Lab Manual, 5th edition, Pu and Reid, revised printing of 2001, Kendall/Hunt Publishing Slides and Coverglasses must be acquired before the third lab. These are available as a kit in the bookstore. Plastic ruler (metric), hand calculator, color pencils, and note paper. Exams and Tests: Dates of the five exams are listed in the course outline. The dates for the five lab tests will be announced. Exams and tests will be multiple choice, fill-ins, matching and/or short answer. Exams will cover the lecture and text readings. Tests will cover the laboratory lectures and exercises. Class Attendance: You are expected to attend class regularly and punctually, unless you have a valid reason for not doing so, in which case you should let me know. If you are consistently late or absent from lectures and labs, your grade will be compromised. Absences and tardiness will be taken into account in the calculation of your final grade. Points will be added or removed after the final grade has been calculated depending on your attendance and tardiness. This often has a great impact on your final grade, particularly if you have a borderline grade – for example a grade average of a 90 to 93 can be a B+, A- or an A depending on your absences and tardiness. Cell Phones/Small Computer Devices: Cell phones/small computer devices must be turned off when you come to class and must be put away (out of sight). Interruption of the class because of a cell phone will result in a 5 point deduction on the next exam. Use of a cell phone/small computer device during a testing period will result in a 0 grade for that quiz/test/practical/exam. If you are expecting an important message or phone call please let me know and I will try to accommodate you. Final Grades: Should you miss an exam, test or practical you will earn a 0 grade for it, unless you have an extremely valid, verifiable reason for doing so (physicians note, police accident report, etc.). If you miss an exam or test for a valid reason, you will be given a make up exam in its place. All make-ups will be taken on May 8th. Grades will be calculated in the following way: Each exam is worth 15% to total 75% of your grade. Each lab test is worth 5% to total 25% of your grade. Grades will be assigned as follows: A 94 – 100 A90 - 93 B+ 87 - 89 B 84 - 86 B80 – 83 C+ 77 – 79 C 70 – 76 D 60 – 69 F 59 of less
