WORK GROUP EXAMPLE:
Traffic Signal Maintenance: These positions perform skilled electrical and electronic installation, maintenance, and
repair of traffic signals and monitoring systems throughout the City and County of Denver. These classifications are
primarily located within the Street Maintenance Division of Public Works.
TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN 1 (616-J): Under direct supervision, performs work in the installation and maintenance
of traffic control devices.
Education: High School Diploma or GED Certificate; with additional course work specific to electronics (AC/DC
electricity, solid state theory, electronic testing equipment, and reading schematics).
Experience: One year of experience in traffic signal installation and maintenance, or equivalent experience on similar
equipment such as computers, two-way radios, and sophisticated electrical or electronic systems.
Licensure: Requires an International Municipal Signal Association Work Zone Traffic Control Safety Certification and
some positions may require a Class-B Commercial Driver’s License.
TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN 2 (618-J): Performs skilled journey level work in field and shop installation, servicing
and maintenance of electrical and electronic intelligent transportation sub-systems (traffic control devices).
Education: High School Diploma or GED Certificate; with additional course work specific to electronics (AC/DC
electricity, solid state theory, electronic testing equipment, and reading schematics).
Experience: Three years of experience installing and maintaining traffic signal equipment.
Licensure: Requires an International Municipal Signal Association Traffic Signal Level II Certification and some positions
may require a Class-B Commercial Driver’s License.
TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN 3 (620-J): This class performs skilled work at the specialist level maintaining intelligent
transportation sub-systems.
Education: High School Diploma or GED Certificate; with additional course work specific to electronics (AC/DC
electricity, solid state theory, electronic testing equipment, and reading schematics).
Experience: Three years of experience in the installation and maintenance of traffic signal systems with one of those
years specializing in the installation and maintenance of intelligent transportation sub-systems such as programmable
controllers, surveillance and detection, communications infrastructure, and variable message signs.
Licensure: Requires an International Municipal Signal Association Traffic Signal Level III Bench or Field Certification and
some positions may require a Class-B Commercial Driver’s License.

TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN SUPERVISOR (810-J): Supervises the installation and maintenance of traffic signal
systems and directs the work of Traffic Signal Technicians and other assigned workers.
Education: High School Diploma or GED Certificate; with six semester hours of additional college level course work in
electronics (AC/DC electricity, solid state theory, electronic testing equipment, and reading schematics).
Experience: Three years of experience installing, troubleshooting, and repairing complex traffic signal and traffic
monitoring systems including all of the various types of equipment configurations used by the City.
Licensure: Requires an International Municipal Signal Association Traffic Signal Level III Bench or Field Certification and
some positions may require a Class-B Commercial Driver’s License.
MANAGER (814-A): Manages functional and/or operational area(s) that include implementing work plans based on
annual goals and the strategic plan; resolves citizen, operational, and management issues; and achieves goals while
ensuring resources are utilized appropriately.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree.
Experience: Three years of supervisory experience or three years of experience at an Administrator level.
DIRECTOR (816-A): Directs functional and/or operational areas that include developing annual and multi-year work plans
and strategies; ensures resources are available to achieve work plans; resolves complex business issues; and
establishes management practices and processes that ensure the accomplishment of performance standards.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree.
Experience: Five years of experience at the type and level of Manager.
