TRANSPORTATION
Syracuse is located at the crossroads of two interstate highway systems,
east/west I-90 the New York State Thruway, and north/south I-81.
Highway: More than 150 trucking companies, including the nation’s top
12 carriers of general freight, service the Syracuse area.
Air: Over 175 passenger flights arrive and depart daily from the
Syracuse Hancock International Airport, serviced by seven major airlines
and several commuter lines. Six major air cargo companies service the
Syracuse terminal in addition to several regional carriers, forwarders and
passenger airlines that offer air freight services.
Bus: CENTRO provides public transportation for Syracuse and suburbs at
a fare of $1.00. Onondaga Coach, Greyhound, Syracuse & Oswego, and
Trailways also provide inter-city passenger service.
Rail: CSX provides direct rail freight service to a variety of Northeastern
markets. Amtrak provides rail passenger transportation service from the
William F. Walsh Regional Transportation Center.
Water: The Port of Oswego is located on the southeast shore of
Lake Ontario, 34 miles northwest of Syracuse. The New York State
Canal System encompasses 524 miles and runs east-west across New
York State, connecting the Niagara River with the Hudson River. The
Onondaga Lake Barge Canal Terminal is located just north of Syracuse.
HEALTH CARE
Four acute care hospitals; a number of long-term skilled nursing
facilities, outpatient centers serving all sectors of the county, renowned
teaching facilities, including SUNY Upstate Medical University, two
hospital-based nursing schools, and several residency programs.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Public, Private and Parochial Education: There are 18 school
districts in Onondaga County (17 Suburban, 1 City) with an enrollment
of approximately 80,000 students. The districts are comprised of 78
Elementary Schools, 27 Junior High, and 21 High Schools.
Colleges and Universities: There are 44 private and state colleges
within the Greater Syracuse Region, with a combined enrollment of over
215,000 students. In the Syracuse area there are eight schools including
Syracuse University, Le Moyne College, SUNY Upstate Medical University,
the College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Onondaga
Community College, SUNY Empire State College, Cazenovia College, and
Bryant & Stratton College.
Vocational Training: The five public vocational centers and 24 private
vocational and technical schools offer more than 80 courses of study in a
wide variety of fields.
