TRAINING PROVIDER INFORMATION
STATEMENTS
PRPS Recruitment 2015/16
All Training Providers were asked to provide an information statement regarding their
organisation and the arrangements for preregistration training. Each statement should
contain contact information along with details of training sites on offer, general background
to the organisation and information on potential opportunities for summer placements, parttime work and visiting each Pharmacy. The purpose of the Training Provider’s information
statement is to facilitate prospective trainees in making informed choices about potential
training providers that they may wish to undertake their pre-registration training with, thus
enabling them to complete their Preference Form. The key to being successful in the
recruitment process is to ensure that you are on Training Provider Preference Lists prior to
the preferencing deadline; the best way to do this is to arrange visitations and work
placements with Training Providers.
Please be aware that some Training Providers, in their information statements, have
listed premises that are not yet on the NES Approved List. Please note that ONLY
premises on the NES Approved List may be used as training bases in the PreRegistration Pharmacist Scheme (PRPS).
There are two different ways of viewing and navigating this document, the first index is listed
alphabetically by Pharmacy name, and broken up into sections for Community and Hospital
Pharmacies. The second index is a list of Training Providers organised by Health Board
area. A link back to both indices appears at the bottom of each page.

NHS Pre-Registration Pharmacist Scheme 2015/16
Name of Training Provider
NHS Education for Scotland (NES) Modular Programme
(NES in conjunction with a community and hospital employer)
NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is a Special Health Board with
responsibility for the education and training of all NHS staff. NES
Pharmacy is one of the directorates within the Board and provides
education and training for all NHS pharmacists and registered
technicians in Scotland.
NES Pharmacy has a network of local Postgraduate Tutors who
arrange local or national direct learning courses with topics determined
by a variety of needs assessment methods. The direct learning
courses encompass evening or day courses, and for pharmacists
unable to attend, NES Pharmacy promotes a number of distance and
e-learning packages in a variety of subjects.
Training Provider
background
Further information about NES Pharmacy can be found on the
website:
http://www.nes.scot.nhs.uk/education-and-training/bydiscipline/pharmacy.aspx
With regard to pre-registration pharmacist training NES Pharmacy now
leads the development and management of the national Preregistration Pharmacist Scheme (PRPS). The PRPS aims to ensure
that every pre-registration pharmacist funded by NHS Scotland
receives the same high quality training opportunity, support, and
experience regardless of the practice setting. As well as ensuring
quality of training placements, this will involve ensuring that all tutors
and trainers are suitably trained, approved and fully supported in their
role.
As part of the current development of the scheme, NES is exploring
the delivery of a true cross-sectoral modular training programme.
Further information is given in the section below.
NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is offering a pre-registration
placement that combines hospital experience with community and
adds an element of specialism in a programme plan that consists of
three work placement blocks each with specified learning outcomes.
Training Practices
proposed
The work placement blocks are community practice for approximately
6 months, hospital practice for about 4 months and a specialist block
of about two months
NES secured agreement with a number of community and hospital
pharmacies to establish pilots of the modular programme. The pilots are
being run during the 2013/14 and 2014/15 training years, and
the specialist blocks that have been included education and training
(at NES) and a specialist clinical pharmacy placement in a hospital
setting.

NHS Pre-Registration Pharmacist Scheme 2015/16
For the 2015/16 training year, NES is looking to involve additional
hospital and community partners in the modular programme. Precise
details are not known at this time, but the programme(s) offered will
take account of candidate preferences for location and for the
speciality component.
Summer placements / Parttime work / Visitation.
Please contact Stephen Peddie to discuss options for any summer
placements, visitation arrangements and/or if you would like to discuss
the proposed programme arrangements

We are entering into our sixth year of participating in the NES
Pre-registration Pharmacist Scheme. The tutor, Alasdair

Most of the necessary community experience of a preregistration pharmacy graduate can be obtained at Burnside and
Merrylee Pharmacies, however, we strive to increase that
experience through visiting a needle exchange pharmacy, a GP
practice and giving the trainee an insight into the organisation of
other bodies impacting on the delivery of healthcare services e.g.
the local CHP, the health board, and Community Pharmacy
Scotland.
We are fully committed to providing the high standards of preregistration training as required by NES Pharmacy through full
compliance with the requirements of the Educational Agreement.

in. We will organise for them to attend a pre-registration
training event at a location organised by NHS Education for

and offer them employment as managers, relief managers
and locums when they qualify. Being newly qualified we give
them support through our head office and area managers.

and mock exam papers during the year.
General comment
Each trainee will be given their own Co-operative learning
portfolio that complements the GPhC manual. The learning
portfolio supports trainees in achieving their performance
standards. Tutors are also supported with an in house
training guide and tutor training.
Halfway through their pre registration year, the trainees are
invited to apply for relief manager positions. They will be in
this role for a minimum of 6 months and can either stay on
relief or apply for a branch manager vacancy and will then
get the relevant managerial training.

Name of Training Provider
J & A Reekie 8 Ford Street, Catrine, Ayrshire, KA5 6RW
As Catrine is a small village we are in the fortunate position
of having a very close working relationship with the local GP
practice, and are involved in attending weekly multidisciplinary team meetings. This also results in us having a
very close working relationship with the local district nurses,
CPNs, social work, and palliative care team, making a
difference locally to help improve patient care. We have a
qualified supplementary prescriber, and have a
supplementary prescribing clinic run within the pharmacy.
Training Provider background In addition to the national public health services; we
participate in numerous local initiatives run by the health
board, including Clozapine supply, anti-TNF supply,
palliative care, MDS, community MAR charts and are also
an early adopter site for CMS. This involves us dispensing
serial prescriptions, and helping train surgery staff in relation
to this. In order to successfully run this aspect of the new
contract we have had very close working with the GP
practice staff, including GPs and reception staff. As we work
in a rural area, we have a local community hospital for which
we supply all discharge medications, providing experience in
a community hospital environment.
We are involved in the undergraduate experiential learning
programme with University of Strathclyde and enjoy having
the students to learn about community pharmacy.
We were able to organise visits and experience with many
different healthcare professional for previous pre-registration
trainees. This has been possible through the established
relationships the pharmacy has with local healthcare
professionals. Previous visits have included visits to, or days

The trainee attended numerous NES training evenings,

exactly what had been learned during the training event, and
what learning outcomes could be developed further.
Although we do not have organised training days, the tutor
uses real prescriptions on a daily basis to improve clinical
knowledge and has developed training tools to cover clinical
pharmacy, the drug tariff, and the legal side of pharmacy. As
these tools have been developed by the tutor, the student

We fully support our colleagues with training to ensure they have the
skills and knowledge to provide this critical service.
Having supported Preregistration students for a substantial period of
time, our pre-registration programme has been developed to provide
a framework for every individual to complete a successful training
programme, achieve registration and develop the foundation skills
required to take on the role of a pharmacist.
Over the course of your programme, you will find that a range of
activities have been incorporated into our training scheme to ensure
that you have a varied and enjoyable experience.
As well as receiving support and guidance from our in-house team,
you will benefit from comprehensive work books and online support

You’ll also join our regional trainers for 12 days of off-site structured

activities are based around clinical topics (both minor ailments and
major therapeutics) and are supported by your monthly off-site

Training Practices are subject to changes as we evaluate and identify

NHS Pre-Registration Pharmacist Scheme 2015/16
Name of Training Provider
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde
Pharmacy and Prescribing Support Unit (NHSGGC PPSU)
NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde (NHSGGC) has the biggest
hospital pharmacy team in Scotland and is offering preregistration training for up to 17 graduates. The organisation
has supported pre-registration training for a long time with a
very good track record, thanks to the excellent support
provided by the pre-registration tutors. The hospital
pharmacy service in NHSGGC provides a comprehensive
range of services and the main focus is the delivery of high
quality pharmaceutical care to patients across all hospitals
and clinical specialties. The geographical size of the Health
Board is relatively small for the size of its population (almost
¼ of the population of Scotland).
Training Provider
background
The development of the New South Glasgow Hospitals
campus means that with the new adult and children’s
hospitals due to be operational in summer 2015, this is an
exciting time to be undertaking your training in NHSGGC.
Recent redesign of services has produced a centralised
robotic procurement and distribution service and this will
enable the hospital teams to further develop existing ward
based services so that most patients will have their
medicines in the bedside locker and the pharmacy team will
be on hand to take drug histories, provide clinical advice,
prescribe medicines and educate patients and staff. The
pharmacy service has also consolidated its information and
governance arrangements and created appropriate specialist
teams to provide expert advice across the single system
service to ensure consistency of approach. Pre-registration
trainees will participate in most areas of service delivery and
gain broad experience and evidence to demonstrate
completion of the Performance Standards.
NHSGGC provides the full range of clinical specialties
including cardiology, respiratory, gastroenterology,
neurology, nephrology, urology, vascular surgery, plastic
surgery, dermatology, intensive care medicine, paediatrics,
neonatology, fetal medicine, psychiatry and care of the
elderly amongst others. The West of Scotland Cancer Centre
is based at the Beatson Oncology Centre in Glasgow and
also has a well developed pharmacy service. Pre-registration
trainees will get the opportunity to train in several of these
areas during their year.
There are close working relationships with Pharmaceutical
Public Health, Prescribing Support Services, and Community
Pharmacies and all of these areas contribute to preregistration training. Pre-registration trainees will attend West
of Scotland hospital pharmacy pre-registration training days
and local tutorial sessions as well as participate in all aspects
of training associated with the NES Pre-Registration
Pharmacist Scheme.

NHS Pre-Registration Pharmacist Scheme 2015/16
Due to the exciting development of the New South Glasgow
Hospitals (NSGH) campus into one of the largest hospital
sites in Europe, the base sites used for pre-registration
training within NHSGGC are subject to change over the year
2015/16.
Some specialised training in areas such as Medicines
Information and Aseptic services is already provided from a
central base. Trainees may also spend time gaining
experience in clinical areas on sites other than their base
site. All hospitals in NHSGGC are within a relatively small
geographical area and are accessible by public transport;
pre-registration pharmacists are expected to travel
throughout the health board area in order to take advantage
of the wide range of training opportunities offered. The
following hospitals are currently used as training bases for
pre-registration training:
Training Practices proposed

Glasgow Royal Infirmary
Gartnavel General Hospital
Inverclyde Royal Hospital
Royal Alexandra Hospital
Royal Hospital for Sick Children (services will move
to NSGH)
Southern General Hospital (services will move within
NSGH)
Western Infirmary (services will move to NSGH)
Victoria Infirmary (services will move to NSGH)
Because of the exciting developments taking place in
NHSGGC, candidates must be prepared to undertake their
training in any of the sites listed above. It should also be
recognised that there may be a requirement to move base
from one site to another within the health board area
depending on the timetable for relocation of services.
All hospitals in NHSGGC are part of a single, GPhC
approved, regional training programme.
NHSGGC provides summer hospital vacational training for
pharmacy undergraduates and this is organised via the
Scottish Hospital Pharmacy Vacational Training Scheme on
an annual basis. Applications open in November and close in
December with the interview selection process taking place
in January each year.
Summer placements / Parttime work / Visitation.
Further small group visits will take place on various
NHSGGC hospital sites in May and June. Limited places will
be available and information on these will be advertised
through University of Strathclyde and Robert Gordon
University. Alternatively, pharmacy students can register their
interest in these visits by contacting one of the pharmacists
listed below. Attending one of these visits will allow pharmacy
students to meet current pre-registration trainees and tutors,

Name of Training Provider
NHS Highland
NHS Highland has been involved in pre-registration training
for many years and boasts an enviable reputation for the
quality of
the services provided and for the friendliness of its staff. Preregistration trainee pharmacists can be assured of a warm
welcome. There are usually two trainees each year, based at
Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. Raigmore is the main hospital
for the Highlands serving a population of just over 200,000
over a large geographical area.
Like the city in which it is based, the pharmacy service is
constantly developing. There are about 90 staff at the main
site, Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, and about 100 within
the overall Pharmacy Services Unit which also includes
some primary care pharmacists and support staff. Some of
the Department’s clinical trials activity is housed within a new
Clinical Research Facility.
Training Provider
background
Redesign of medicines usage supporting implementation of
national strategy is designed to deliver improved evidencebased services to the public and patients, using the skills of
the pharmaceutical profession to deliver effective care. In
conjunction with other initiatives, including skill mix review,
this will also address quality standards and targets for
medicines management. These are designed to ensure that
medicines policies throughout Highland are consistent with
best practice.
Pre-registration trainee pharmacists based at Raigmore
enjoy a full and varied year tailored to their individual needs
and interests. The year follows the GPhC Performance
Standards Programme in the context of experiencing work in
a variety of specialities and settings. Trainees usually start
with a brief spell in the distribution and procurement sections
of the department. This provides them with an understanding
of the vital roles, which these core sections have in ensuring
the continuing availability of medicines for patient care.
Experience is then gained in all the other sections of the
department: Quality Assurance, Medicines Management &
Information, Production / Aseptic Dispensing, Dispensary
and Clinical Pharmacy.
A clinical placement in Mental Health Pharmacy at New
Craigs in Inverness is included. Trainees also spend time
with Primary Care colleagues and learn of the work of
specialists such as NHS Highland’s Formulary Pharmacist.
Trainees are given a choice of projects for the NES scheme.
On a wider level, Raigmore acts as the base for a Research
Institute, has academic links with schools of pharmacy and
participates in the training both of medical and nursing
students.

NHS Lanarkshire
Lanarkshire is approximately halfway between Glasgow and
Edinburgh. All acute hospital sites are served by rail links to
Glasgow city centre and are within 30 miles of Glasgow Airport.
NHS Lanarkshire consists of three hospitals:
 Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride (492 beds)
Hairmyres Hospital offers a full range of inpatient, outpatient,
diagnostic and clinical support services and is also home to
Lanarkshire’s only Cardiac Catheterisation Centre consisting
of two new, state of the art catheterisation laboratories for
diagnosis and treatment of blood vessel blockages around
the heart.
 Monklands Hospital, Airdrie (535 beds)
Monklands Hospital has a £3.7m renal unit providing an
unprecedented level of care for Lanarkshire’s renal patients
and also houses Lanarkshire’s centralised services for
inpatient ENT, dermatology, haematology, blood borne
viruses, HIV and infectious diseases. Monklands Hospital is
currently involved in a pilot of electronic prescribing
(HEPMA).
 Wishaw General Hospital, Wishaw (626 beds)
Wishaw General Hospital includes the third largest maternity
unit in Scotland, a paediatric and neonatal unit and an
Emergency Care Unit containing an integrated Accident and
Emergency Unit with a 36 bed ward.
The pharmacy team in NHS Lanarkshire is fully committed to the
Scottish Patient Safety Programme focusing on how to change
our practice to improve patient safety. All three pharmacy
departments have been involved in the LEAN process which
improves work flow allowing departments to work more
efficiently.
A number of staff in our pharmacy team including preregistration trainee pharmacists have had their research / audit
work published in journals or presented at both national and
international conferences. The pharmacy team has also won
awards through the United Kingdom Clinical Pharmacy
Association in Education and Training, Pain and Leadership.
There will be six pre-registration trainee pharmacist posts
available, two in each hospital and these posts will have
placements in the three hospitals to obtain a wide breadth of
experience. Each hospital has been involved in the training of
pre-registration trainee pharmacists for a number of years.
Training Practices
proposed
Each of the three hospitals has its own pharmacy department
operating from modern facilities. Hairmyres and Monklands
hospitals each have a central pharmacy department that
accommodates the dispensary, aseptic unit, procurement and

clinical offices. The pharmacy service within Wishaw General is
provided from a network of nine pharmacy workstations and two
aseptic areas located over the two floors of the hospital.
All sites use the patients’ own drugs (POD) scheme during their
inpatient stay and on discharge. This scheme involves
pharmacists and technicians working together in teams on wards
to document accurate drug histories on admission, ensure the
quality of patients’ own drugs brought into hospital, reduce
waiting times on discharge and educate patients about their
medicines.
Pharmacy staff across the three sites work closely together and
there are a number of posts which carry area-wide
responsibilities. Most of the pharmacists working within the three
sites have clinical responsibilities, many of which are within
specialist areas.
During the pre-registration year, education and training is given
a high priority and pre-registration trainee pharmacists rotate
through a structured programme to gain experience in all
aspects of pharmaceutical care including clinical pharmacy,
dispensing, aseptic dispensing and procurement.
Each pre-registration pharmacist will be assigned an
experienced senior pharmacist as a tutor who will meet with
them regularly throughout the pre-registration year to support
progress. There will be opportunities to gain experience in
specialties including emergency receiving, haematology,
oncology, neonates, paediatrics, cardiology, respiratory, mental
health, infectious diseases, renal medicine and intensive care. A
one month secondment to a community pharmacy is provided.
In addition to on-site support, our pre-registration trainee
pharmacists participate in the NES and West of Scotland Preregistration study days. Pre-registration trainee pharmacists will
also undertake and present a project and time will be provided in
which to study for the pre-registration exam and undertake and
complete the relevant aspects of the core learning programme.

Hairmyres, Wishaw General and Monklands Hospitals all
provide vocational employment for undergraduates during the
summer months as part of the Scottish Hospital Pharmacists
Vacational Training Scheme. This involves a three week
placement providing a variety of training in the dispensary,
medicines information, aseptic unit and clinical pharmacy as well
as completion of a small audit. Each site offers an open day visit
for any students who wish to visit any of the hospitals to discuss
pre-registration training opportunities, these open days are

NHS Lothian
The NHS Lothian Pharmacy Service is committed to providing
outstanding patient-centred pharmaceutical care. It is managed
as a single system within which primary and secondary care
services are integrated and aspire to meet patients’
pharmaceutical needs as they move across care settings. The
service serves a population of approximately 800,000 people
living in Edinburgh and the Lothian region. Users of the service
have influenced the Pharmacy Strategy which details a delivery
plan for Pharmacy services over the next few years under the
following themes: patient experience, patient safety through
quality, efficiency and productivity, and pharmacy workforce.
Training Provider
background
Many specialist clinical services are delivered from Lothian
hospitals. For example, the Western General Hospital, a 750
bedded hospital hosts the Regional Cancer Centre, Infectious
Diseases and Clinical Neurosciences Units. The Royal
Infirmary of Edinburgh which has in excess of 900 inpatient
beds hosts the Scottish Liver Transplant Centre and other
specialist services such as maternity, accident & emergency,
cardiac surgery, renal unit and orthopaedic surgery. St Johns
Hospital hosts the burns and plastic surgery unit and there is a
separate Royal Hospital for Sick Children. All acute sites
provide general clinical services. The Regional Medicines
Information Centre hosts the Scottish yellow card centre for
reporting adverse drug reactions and is located in the Royal
Infirmary of Edinburgh. Hospitals within the primary care
division include mental health, care of the elderly and
rehabilitation services.
The Pharmacy service is delivered by over 300 members of
staff. There is a structured approach to personal and
workforce development to ensure Pharmacy services continue
to meet developing patient needs. Formal links with academic
institutions and with NHS Education for Scotland facilitates a
partnership approach to the development and delivery of formal
education and training for Pharmacists and Pharmacy support
staff. Provision of pre-registration training has been delivered in
NHS Lothian hospitals for a number of decades and is a priority
in terms of staff development. Pre-registration trainees are
based at one of three main hospital sites (see below) and follow
an extensive rotational programme which takes them to other
sites to experience specialist services such as paediatrics,
mental health and primary care. There is some flexibility within
the programme to provide trainees with the opportunity to learn
about specialist services offered from any of the sites. Teamworking among the group of 7 trainees is encouraged through
project work and small group training events.

General comment
To compliment cross sector training and NES supported
training events, the NHS Lothian Pharmacy service provides an
additional programme of direct learning events which includes a
clinical induction course and study days throughout the year.
However, the focus is on experiential learning in the workplace
as a sound basis for continuing professional development
following the pre-registration year. Each trainee has a tutor at
their base site that monitors their progress and facilitates their
professional development. The NHS Lothian pre-registration
pharmacist training manual contains training plans for each
rotation to ensure a consistent approach to experiential learning
within the service. Trainers within each department support
trainees through provision of training plans and feedback on
performance.
The NHS Lothian Pharmacy service is committed to delivering
pre-registration training and will comply with the Educational
Agreement with NES Pharmacy

private areas for consultation. We use Methameasure Systems to
provide methadone to addicts.

fashion our Pre-Reg students are kept up to date with new
services offered by pharmacy.
Websters Pharmacies fully comply with the requirements of the
Educational Agreement with NES Pharmacy to ensure postgraduate pharmacists receive a thorough training.
Websters pharmacies are a family owned firm and as well as
providing the required necessary clinical and practical skills also
offer an insight into running your own business which would
benefit any pre-registration pharmacists who have aspirations to
