Platte Valley School
District Newsletter
From the Office of the Superintendent
- Glenn McClain, Superintendent of Schools
Wow, this is the next to the last newsletter that will come out for this year and
graduation will just be around the corner. I
hope that it has been a good year for you
and your student(s). We have shared many
successes this year. Students continue to
do well in many ways. Career & Technical
Education students have done well in local
and state competitions. Music students
have done well in local and state
competitions. Athletes have had individual
and team successes. Our students and their
families have many things for which to be
thankful and proud.
Mill Levy election issues. I wanted to
update you on how the mill levy election
and bond election issues are moving
forward. Most of the mill levy election
has to do with operating expenditures
which started in the 2006-2007 school
year because we collect the taxes at this
time of year. Most of the new taxes come
in during May and June and will be
available for the next fiscal year. The mill
levy items that were implemented for
increased salary, benefits, full-time
kindergarten, curriculum expenditures,
and professional development will
continue in the 2016-2017 school year
because of the election approval by our
community. Current projections for the
school finance act and other funding
measures by the legislature are projecting
reduced resources for the Platte Valley
School District. Currently Weld County
expects a lower Assessed Valuation
primarily due to the lower pricing and
reduced oil and gas activity. This will
bring us back to having some revenue
from the state equalization program which
in turn returns us to the negative factor
(cuts put in place 2009-2013). In the last
several years, the reductions from the state
almost counteracted the increase voted in
by our community. The reductions to our
system would be much worse without
your support. It appears that there will be
an increase in state funding this coming
year probably around 2 to 3 %. But with
the reintroduction of the negative factor
our cut could be as high as 11 or 12 %.
We will look to fulfill our promises of
what we will do with the funds. If you
have questions about how the mill levy
items are proceeding feel free to come to
a board meeting or call the
administration office and we can be
more specific.
Bond Issue – What in the election has
been done to date? Over the summer we
were able to complete improvements to
IT infrastructure, temperature control
systems, fire alarm systems, sound
systems, roofs, preschool, middle school
kitchen, a new elementary library and
athletic facilities (new stadium, baseball
and softball bleachers, restrooms and
press boxes). This summer of 2016 will
have a lot of activity as well including a
greenhouse, parking lot work, high
school roofing, and other improvements.

Storm Closure Information
District personnel check roads between
3:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. so that we can make
a decision about school by 6 a.m. when the
first busses leave the district grounds. Road
conditions around the district are considered
and can vary greatly. The north and south
regions of the district can be very different
as well as north/south roads versus east/west
roads.
If the decision is to have school, then
there are no notifications to radio or TV
stations. We always instruct bus drivers to
take their time and be careful. Use your
judgment in deciding what would be best
for your children. You may choose to keep
your children home considering your
situation and conditions around your home.
School Messenger is a calling program
that we have in the district. We will use this
as our first form of notification in the event
we decide to close school, especially in the
case of weather. The calling program has
the capability of making thousands of phone
calls in a matter of minutes. The calling
program will call the phone number that is
recorded on your child’s Infinite Campus
record. You should make sure that we have
accurate and current information in the
system.
Also, the calling program has the
capability of calling up to three phone numbers, sending email, and text
messages. However, to fully utilize all of these
functions, you would need to register in the
school messenger system. In order to register with the School Messenger Calling Sys-
tem you will need a student identification number and access code for each of
your children. You can pick up this
information from school offices or at
parent-teacher conferences. School office personnel will have student ID numbers and access codes.
If you are satisfied to only
have the
calling system call
your home phone or the phone
number recorded in Infinite
Campus, then you do not need to
do anything. However, if you
would like to take advantage of
the
enhanced
features
described above, you will need to
obtain one of the School Messenger student ID and access codes.
If you have additional questions,
please call 336-8500.
If there is a decision to cancel school,
the administration will initiate the
School Messenger notification process
and you will be notified as you have
requested through that system. We will
continue to provide announcements to
news media with the following message.
“PLATTE VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT RE-7 IN KERSEY WILL BE
CLOSED TODAY DUE TO (THE
STORM) OR (ROAD CONDITIONS)
OR
(WEATHER
AND
ROAD
CONDITIONS)”
Radio stations contacted are (among
others):
1310 KFKA
91.5 KUNC
850 KOA
K99 KUAD
We have started contacting TV
stations, we will try and contact
Channels 2, 4, 7 & 9, but please realize
that there is more than one Platte Valley
School District (e.g. Platte Valley RE-3
in Ovid, Colorado) and we do not
control how they display the messages
about schools.
We will make every effort to make the
best decisions we can based on the
information we have at the time. If
school is canceled during the school day
the same notifications are followed.
Please have a plan for your children in
the case of storm closure, where they
should go, etc. Make sure your children
know what the plan is in case of storm
closures.
If you need to call school realize that
we only have a certain number of phone
lines and it may take time to get through.
We do our best to answer phones during
these times, but the volume of calls can
become overwhelming.

Hats Off !
Bonnie Burcham
Communications Specialist, Centennial BOCES
Math is a contentious subject, people seem
to either love it or hate it. However, students
in Julie Thomas’ math classes love it or at
least appreciate it. If someone were to tell
her that they hate math she would ask them
to work with her to make it better, and that
is exactly what she does on a daily basis.
According to multiple colleagues Ms.
Thomas has a unique talent to make even
the students who struggle the most with
math come to life in her class.
“Her ability to help the students (even struggling math students) have a new appreciation for math is tremendous,” said one colleague in particular.
These skills, at least in part, come
from her passion. “I love what I do, what I
teach and that hooks students in,” explains
Thomas. Her main motivator for coming to
work every day is watching the students get
what she teaches. “That moment when (a
student) says ‘I get it now’ is pretty powerful,” explains Thomas.
A passion for math runs deep for Ms.
Thomas. Her favorite part of Platte Valley
High school is definitely the amazing faculty and staff, but also the curriculum she
teaches. It is a collaborative curriculum,
which allows the students to talk to each
other, as well as the teacher, to learn the
material. Because the conversation is now
student centered, class is a conversation, which is a big part of why she
loves it. That kind of love for a subject
does rub off onto the students, helping
them to want to learn.
Having been a faculty member at
Platte Valley High School for five
years Ms. Thomas knows all of the
students, even ones she doesn’t have
in class. She accomplishes this by being the head coach for cross country and
the assistant coach for track and field,
running scoreboards at and attending
other sporting events, as well as by trying to reach out to everyone she sees.
“She always greets every student in the
hall with a smile and a "good morning".
She knows no strangers and is willing to
help any student who walks in her door,”
said another associate.
Ms. Thomas’ philosophy is to build
relationships with the students. By getting to know them, even the ones she
currently isn’t teaching, it makes the
school a safer place emotionally; though
she does normally see most freshmen
and sophomore through the various classes she teaches. The students most definitely respond to this treatment. “When
asked, students say she is a helpful
teacher and good coach, who explains,
cares about their grades, makes sure they
work, and is in a good mood,” explains a
teammate.
In fact, the ability to build relationships with colleagues and students is part
of the reason she moved to Platte Valley
Schools. Previously, she had been teaching in a bigger district, but when she saw
the community here she knew it was the
place to call home. “I like to know all
the kids in the building,” said Thomas.
The size of this district absolutely allows
her to accomplish that goal.
It is clear to all that know her that
the students come first. A great way she
demonstrates it is that she sets the bar
high for her students. One friend of Ms.
Thomas says “(she) has the highest of
expectations for her students. She truly
believes that every student can achieve
in math.” With these standards set and
the ability to connect with students it
isn’t surprising that no one hates math at
Platte Valley High School.

Health Office “Health Beat”
“Healthy Kids Learn Better”
Attention parents/guardians –
 It is anticipated that The State of Colorado will again require each student entering 6th grade and older to
have a “Tdap” (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and acellular Pertussis) vaccine by the first day of school in August
2016. When your student is visiting the doctor this year, it is a great opportunity to talk with your doctor
about getting the vaccine.
 The State of Colorado now requires two doses of Varicella for all students. This schedule was new as of
this school year. We have sent out letters to individual students that are not currently compliant with the
state guidelines. Please call the health office or your child’s physician with any questions or concerns regarding vaccinations.
 The meningococcal vaccine is highly recommended for all students 11 years of age and older.
 Please bring the updated vaccine information to the Health office so school records can be updated.
Medications at School –
» All prescription medications that need to be taken at school require a doctors order and a signature from
the parent/guardian to be given at school.
» All medications must come to the school in the original container from the pharmacy. Ask for 2 bottles –
one for home – one for school.
» All over the counter medications (Tylenol, Advil, Motrin, etc.) require a doctors order and a signature
from the parent/guardian to be given at school.
» All forms and Physician orders MUST be renewed at the beginning of each new school year.
If your child does become sick, please keep them home from school so they do not share their illness with
others. If your child has:
» a fever over 100 degrees
» Diarrhea
» Vomiting
» Some conditions require your child to stay at home for at least 24 hours after starting an antibiotic like
Strep Throat, and Pink Eye, and Impetigo.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s health, please contact the Health Office at 3368525, or your doctor.
Emergency Information –
If your emergency contact information has changed (work phone, cell phone, home phone etc.), please notify
the school so that updates can be made to your students’ emergency profile. It is very important that we are
able to notify you if your student becomes sick or injured while at school. Please have a “back-up plan” in
place for your student if they need to be picked up from school during the day.

Student Spotlight
Jude Taylor, Platte Valley Elementary School
Bright eyed, energetic kindergartner Jude Taylor greets everyone he
can with a smile and confident “Hi! I’m
Jude!”
Jude Taylor
Grade: Kindergarten
Favorite subject: Reading
Favorite ice cream: Mint Chocolate
Chip
Favorite thing about Platte Valley
Elementary School: Jude’s favorite
things are using the iPad in class and
playing at recess with his friends.
This warm greeting is a proud
moment for Jude. A student with Autism, it had been a struggle for Jude to
communicate, however, this year he has
made great strides. “He introduces himself to new people and gives them
meaningful compliments,” said Mrs.
Bouchard, his teacher.
Having this line of communication open up for Jude is allowing him
to do what he loves most, make new
friends. Jude is proud to tell everyone
about his two best friends. Playing with
them at recess is one of the things he
looks forward to most of the day.
Jude is also excelling at reading and writing. He is sounding out
words while looking at books and is
truly grasping the concept of words and
meanings. When it is time to practice
writing he doesn’t even have to be
asked to get out his supplies, he is excited and ready to begin.
That is not all he loves to do at
school, though. Jude is a gifted artist
who loves to draw. “Jude is a really
good artist. His drawings have really
good clarity,” said Mrs. Bouchard. At
times during conversations if Jude has
been drawing his art helps enhance his
communication, bringing better understanding for both parties.
Such great progress allows
Jude to share his love for dinosaurs,
RescueBots and animals with others.
Through drawing, playing with his
friends and talking with as many people
as possible sharing is now a daily occurrence. The future is bright for Jude and
Platte Valley Elementary.
