BT Private Circuits Service Description
MegaStream Ethernet
and BT Enterprise
Ethernet
Outline of Service
MegaStream Ethernet & BT Enterprise Ethernet offer
connection oriented ethernet data services that operate at
circuit bandwidths from 0.2Mbit/s to 100Mbit/s. They enable
customers to transport data between their business premises
and interconnect Local & Wide Area Network equipment
using 10Mbit/s, 100Mbit/s and 1Gbit/s ethernet interfaces.
BT Enterprise Ethernet offers fixed circuit bandwidth from
0.2Mbit/s to 1.6Mbit/s and MegaStream Ethernet offers
flexible circuit bandwidth from 2Mbit/s to 100Mbit/s.
MegaStream Ethernet can be used in isolation, but BT
Enterprise Ethernet must always be used in conjunction with
MegaStream Ethernet.
Key Features and Availability
MegaStream Ethernet and BT Enterprise Ethernet both
provide the following key features:
• Transparent transport of customer’s data between two
ethernet ports
• Delivery via a compact NTE (Network Terminating
Equipment) with either:
• • Pre-configured 10Mbit/s or 100Mbit/s interface (no autonegotiation)
• • Gigabit Ethernet interface (MegaStream Ethernet only)
• No manual configuration of ethernet addresses required on
10/100 interfaces by the customer – a self learning bridge
function is used
• Meets UK/International standards (IEEE 802.3 and 802.1)
including support of extended packet sizes
• When Gbit/s ethernet (GbE) access is used, VLAN tagging
will be used by BT
• Guaranteed, bi-directional, symmetrical uncontended
bandwidth. No over subscription/burst above contracted
circuit bandwidth is available
• Recommended maximum number of MAC addresses per
ethernet port is 200, to maintain throughput performance
MegaStream Ethernet has the following additional key
features:
• Provides point to point and point to aggregate (channelised)
data service options. This enables customers to choose
either a single site to site connection to be set up, or a
Head Office to branch network can be constructed using a
single NTE interface at the Head Office which is able to
support a number of remote sites using Ethernet interfaces.
A maximum number of 15 remote sites can be connected to
a single ethernet interface (aggregate) dependant on fibre
access speed and overall network design. Where more than
16 sites are required (up to a maximum of 400 sites) to be
connected in a single network, a Gigabit Ethernet (GbE)
access must be used.
• Choice of fibre access speeds from 10Mbit/s through to
1Gbit/s capacity (minimum access speed of 10Mbit/s
applies)
• Scalable bandwidth across the core network in increments
of 2Mbit/s, 5Mbit/s and 10Mbit/s up to the maximum
100Mbit/s capacity
• Resilient access options are available. The first offers
resilient fibre access delivery between the single BT node
and customer NTE, and the second offers two standard
access circuits delivered between two different BT nodes
and two customer NTEs. Both are available as priced
options.
• GbE access is not available from all charging points
BT Enterprise Ethernet has the following additional key
features:
• Provides a point to aggregate data service, where the
aggregate end must always be a MegaStream Ethernet
access circuit. A maximum number of 15 BT spoke sites,
whether they are BT Enterprise Ethernet or MegaStream
Ethernet circuits can be connected to a single 10Mbit/s or
100Mbit/s interface and a maximum of 400 BT Enterprise
Ethernet and MegaStream Ethernet circuits can be
connected to a 1Gbit/s interface.
• Available from selected BT exchanges
• Choice of copper access speeds from 0.2Mbit/s to 1.6Mbit/s
– subject to availability. Please ask you BT Account
Manager, Sales Manager or Authorised Dealer to confirm
availability, or alternatively you can visit us for further
contact details at www.bt.com

Pricing & Discounts
MegaStream Ethernet pricing will consist of one off
Connection Charges and Annual Rental charges, dependent
on the chosen fibre access bandwidth for the site, plus a
Connection Charge and Annual Rental charge for the end to
end circuit bandwidth between each customer site. BT
Enterprise Ethernet pricing will consist of a one off Connection
Charge and Annual Rental charge dependent on the chosen
circuit bandwidth. There is no end to end circuit charge for
BT Enterprise Ethernet circuits as there is for MegaStream
Ethernet.
Metro and National Pricing structures apply with full details in
the BT Price List
Metro Pricing applies where both customer sites are served by
the same BT charging point or any two charging points within
defined city boundaries
Where customer sites are not served by the same BT charging
point or two charging points within the defined city
boundaries, a National pricing structure applies
MegaStream Ethernet access pricing is based on the radial
distance between the customer site and the BT charging point
Pricing for the circuit bandwidth between charging points is
route based and is distance independent
Internal and External shifts are allowed (subject to survey)
Refer to the BT Price List for current charges and Metro areas
