LuxLive 2013 is almost upon us: and
with a massive 5,000 square metres of
innovations and no fewer than five theatres
of talks and debates, there’s something for
everyone. Taking place at Earls Court on 20-21
November, LuxLive is entirely free-toattend. Ripping up the rule book, Lux brings
together all of the latest innovations in this
fast-moving sector. It will scrutinise the
pros and cons of the latest lighting tech and
will get under the bonnet of some of the
UK’s most challenging lighting projects.
All the big names will be showing
their latest kit including Philips, GE,
Thorn and Toshiba. In total there will be
more than 160 exhibitors including upand-coming players with hot kit such as

LuxLive’s programme has been divided into the
key sectors that are feeling the effects of the LED
revolution: retail, education, healthcare, industrial,
transport, hospitality and leisure, commercial and
outdoor. As well as there being plenty for OEMs,
lighting designers and anyone with a general
responsibility for lighting and energy management.
In each sector, LuxLive will be taking an in-depth
look at exemplar projects, drilling into some of the
key technologies and will debate the particular
problems of that sector. No stone will be left

new British Council for Offices guide on office lighting.
This refurbished office block has been given a lighting award for its
strengthened street presence and minimal, linear, clean and bright spaces.

10.30am Hospitality and Leisure Project Uncovered: Guinness Storehouse, Dublin
This major tourist attraction in the Irish capital includes museum,
gallery and retail spaces and required a distinctive and dramatic lighting
treatment. Designer Michael Grubb explains the scheme and how the
brief was achieved.

Shed conversion, Kings Cross, London
This office conversion boasts an average power consumption of just
7.45W/m2 – including feature lighting. Meyrick of Hoare Lea explains how
a combination of daylight linking, sophisticated control and design has
created an ultra-low energy, award-winning, office for the engineering
consultancy.

Superdry, Regent Street
This flagship store features a dramatically different lighting treatment.
Accent-only illumination makes the merchandise the hero, appeals to
their key demographic and keeps energy use down. Paul Nulty of PNLD
talks us through the scheme.

Phil Caton of PJC Lighting Studio – whose recent work includes the
Denim Studio at Selfridges and the Christian Louboutin concession at
Harrods – discusses the special requirements of lighting fashion.

By maximising daylight and using controls to deliver the right light to the right

OLEDs have ultra-thin form factors, high efficiency and unique properties
such as transparency when unilluminated. Matt Hanbury of Philips Lighting
explains the benefits and applications of OLEDs, and looks at some realised
projects.
2.00pm SLL Masterclass: How to benefit from Enhanced Capital Allowances
Enhanced Capital Allowances can help you save significant sums on a lighting
installation by giving tax relief. Helen Loomes of Trilux explains the benefits
and the new requirements of the scheme, looking at the numbers from some
recent case studies.
2.30pm SLL Masterclass: How to reduce energy with a lighting retrofit
A simple lighting retrofit, as opposed to a full refurbishment, can often be the
best solution for rapid savings. Kevin Stubbs of Thorn Lighting outlines the top
technological advancements in light sources, systems and materials that can

3.30pm LEDs don’t have to be more expensive than conventional systems
Marc Ottolini, founder of Isotera, takes a look at the Total Cost of Ownership
and will show that although LED fixtures are still more expensive than

Traditionally the hospitality industry has put the customer experience before
all other considerations. But does this have to be at the exclusion of energy
use? Panellists include Gary Lohan of One Aldwych Hotel, Kate Wilkins of
Kate Wilkins Lighting Design, Oliver Rosevear of Costa Coffee and Paul Evans
of Aurora.
This project was unusual in that it was a direct one-for-one luminaire retrofit,
which saw LED fittings replace halogen. Additionally, a creative financing
package meant that the project was funded entirely on energy savings with no
capital cost to the theatre. Speakers from E.ON, Nottingham City Council and
the suppliers, Projection Lighting.

Carefully balancing the lighting for differing pedestrian experiences at
this urban park, Arup delivered a flexible, playful night-time setting while
