SEPTEMBER 2016 · ISSUE 50 CAE and Early Adopter Students When it comes to CAE simulation use, how early can students realistically start? Three high schools students, juniors and seniors from the Seattle area, may have answered that question at a recent AAIA Propulsion Aero Workshop in Salt Lake City, Utah. The students presented work on nozzle geometries and used STAR-CCM+ to generate fluid dynamics models. Having no background in CFD or CAE software, the students used eLearning modules for CFD basics to create mesh resolution studies along with a sweep of data points using multiple turbulence models. Surprisingly, it took them just 3 weeks to produce 2D-axysymetric RANS results. While undergraduate use of CAE simulations is increasing, fluid dynamics solvers are still mostly used by Masters and PhD programs and researchers. Introducing CFD in high school STEM programs would be welcomed by companies needing CAE-savvy graduates for the job market. Today's modern codes and online training advancements are making that a real possibility. Students can test key concepts including correct boundary placement, flow angles, changing of design parameters, Student Licenses Request an individual student license. You get the same full capability, no-cell-limit license and mesh dependence using pre-built simulations allowing for minimal time investment. Available on the Steve Portal. SUCCESS STORIES Italian Design Team Team H2politO, winners of Shell's Eco-Marathon Europe, introduced their new XAM eco car last week in Torino. This Politecnico di Torino design team uses STARCCM+ to analyze the car's shape to achieve the lowest possible aerodynamic resistance. Vortex Generator Simulations The Dept of Aerospace Engineering at University of Kansas is comparing STARCCM+ simulations of vortex generators with experimental results. Eventually, this work will move to automated design space exportation to improve the performance of wind turbine blades. CFD in Food Technology The master's program in Food Technology at Germany's Anhalt University of Applied Sciences will deploy STAR-CCM+ as part of the course. Professors in the Dept of Applied Biosciences and Process will use of STAR-CCM+ to help teach the required CFD course module.
