CLC Licensing
Features Description
CLC license setup
With a license server
from CLC bio, you
have the perfect
overview of your organization’s licenses.
Upgrading and maintaining the licenses
has never been easier.
CLC bio offers both fixed licenses and floating licenses,
providing a unique, flexible license setup which enables
customers to choose the license model that fits their
exact needs. Just like the CLC Workbenches, the licenses
are platform-independent and can be used on almost any
Windows, Linux or Mac computer.
Fixed licenses
The fixed license is activated and locked to a computer,
meaning that it can only be used on this particular computer. If there are multiple user accounts on the computer,
they will all be able to use the CLC software on the same
license.
For this setup, CLC bio provides a license key which is activated on the computer with a few clicks. Thus, it is a very
simple and easy solution for small installations. For large
installations, e.g. department or site licenses, activating a
license on each computer can be time-consuming. In this
case floating licenses are a better alternative.
Floating licenses on a license server
Unlike the fixed license, a floating license can be used by
more than one computer. However, it cannot be used by
more than one computer at the same time.
If you purchase e.g. 15 floating licenses, 15 people can use
the CLC Workbench at the same time. More people can
have the CLC Workbench installed, but only 15 people can
use it simultaneously.
License models
Our solutions can be licensed on three different levels:
1.Single-user licenses: one or a few researchers purchase a few licenses
2.Department licenses: we provide licenses for all users in a department, research group or lab
3.Site license: all the organization’s users have access to use CLC Workbenches.
In more technical terms, each of these license models
can be realized using either fixed licenses or floating
licenses hosted on a license server.
Benefits of using floating licenses
The main reason for using floating license is the easy
administration and monitoring of the licenses. Once you
have installed the license server, it is very simple to install
the CLC Workbenches on the client computers. All license
administration takes place on the server.
The floating license setup works like this
For monitoring, the license server provides an overview
of the status of the licenses: how many are currently in
use etc.
A license server supplied by CLC bio hosts a set of floating licenses. The server should be on the local network.
Whenever someone on the local network opens a CLC
Workbench, it will request a license from the server. When
the Workbench is closed, the license will be returned to
the server and become available for other users.
The license server can be set up to only allow certain computers to get a license, either based on the host name,
user name, or IP address (for individual computers or a
subnet). This is useful if the licenses should only be available for e.g. one lab.

Extra licenses for a limited time period
When users are not connected to the local network there are several ways to
still be able to use the CLC Workbench:
When you purchase a license for a CLC Workbench it is usually a perpetual
license, but if you need licenses for a limited time period, we offer rental
licenses as well. Please contact sales@clcbio.com or your contact person at
CLC bio if you are interested in a quote for rental licenses.
The user can borrow a license from the server for a fixed period of time. While
the license is borrowed it cannot be used by others. (The time limits for borrowing can be configured on the server).
On buying the solution from CLC bio the organization can choose a combination of licenses. If certain users often need to use the CLC Workbench while
not at the office, they can be equipped with a fixed license instead.
If there is access to the local network through a VPN connection, the license
server can be accessed remotely.
These three options provide flexibility and support for the increasingly mobile nature of modern ways of working, while still maintaining the benefits
of a license server.
