Course Title: CST 1000 Foundations of Computing
Department: Computer Systems Technology
Credit Hours: 3 credits, 3 hours
Prerequisite: CUNY proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics.
Category: Elective course in the Pathways Flexible Core -­‐ Scientific World category.
Course Description:
This introductory course for non-­‐computer systems majors highlights the use of computers in problem solving and enhances critical thinking skills. Students learn fundamental computer principles and study how technology influences our learning, communication, and social interactions.

Strengths:
This introductory course is designed for students who are enrolled in academic programs that require one free elective from the Scientific World category. The students will learn fundamental computer principles and study how information technology influences our learning, communication, and social interactions. The course also includes the implementation of algorithms in problem solving and teaches the students how to structure a problem, think in a logical manner, and obtain a reasoned solution. Furthermore, the course explores computer technology as it relates to other fields, collaborative thinking, and understanding the cultural impact of computer technology.
Weaknesses: None.
Issues and concerns:
The following suggestions and revisions were made during the review process:
1. Some formatting inconsistencies were addressed.
2. Learning outcomes and assessment methods were modified.
3. Course description and rationale was edited.
4. Exam schedule and the weekly topics outline were modified.
5. Data was collected to determine the number of potential students who can take this course.
6. Textbook was changed from required to recommended.
Sub-­‐committee activities:
Several email discussions took place between the proposers and the sub-­‐committee members. The proposers and sub-­‐committee members held two meetings with Dean Hom, Provost August, Associate Provost Brown and Executive Associate Cardascia. Sub-­‐
committee members and reviewers recommended many modifications and changes as listed above. All of the recommendations were incorporated into the final version of the proposal by the proposers.
