Get moving with mechatronics
Mechatronics is based on elements of mechanical
engineering, electrical and electronic engineering
and computer science, but it is a distinct discipline
in its own right. A mechatronics engineer is someone
who can understand and merge various pieces
of technology and integrate them to produce a
working system. This new Diploma is the perfect
preparation for a new, rapidly evolving industry.
The course has a focus on ‘hands on’
learning and practical skills sought by industry.
You’ll use programmable logic controller (PLC)
equipment for automation tasks (materials
handling, robotics, production) for both
pneumatic and electrical equipment.
Gain skills in computer aided drafting (CAD) so you
can interpret and create drawings of components.
You can then use the drawings in the manufacture
of equipment using workshop machinery (lathes,
welding, tapping etc).
Learning about fluid power will give you the skills
and knowledge to set up and connect pneumatic
equipment. You’ll learn how to solder and test
electronics and then use the knowledge to build
electronic equipment.
The course builds your skills in electrical
machinery, mechanical principles and equipment.
Covering both materials and use of material

testing equipment, the course also teaches you
techniques for writing technical documents.
Assessment is project based so you will apply what
you have learnt to build equipment and systems.
The first semester of the Diploma of Engineering
- Technical (Mechatronics) and the Diploma of
Engineering - Technical (Mechanical) share the
same subjects and you can switch between the
two streams by your choice of electives or by
studying additional electives you could gain both
qualifications.
These qualifications can be applied over a wide
variety of areas including:
• mining & mineral processing
• manufacturing
• oil & gas industry
• automotive industry
• aviation & shipbuilding
• road & rail transport
• defence
• agriculture, fishing & food processing
Mechatronics is a specialisation of mechanical
engineering with a greater focus on industrial
automation instead of purely mechanical concepts.
You can also continue your studies at North
Metro in the Advanced Diploma of Engineering
(Mechatronics)and gain credits towards an
Engineering degree.
