Everyone seems to agree that the UK economy is improving; all the figures are there from every source. But supposing, soon, we are no longer in the UK
– how will that affect the economy?
That is what could happen if the Scots vote yes to independence – no more
UK, just England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Yet, while I read speculation from other industries on how they could be affected no-one from the window industry or glass trade has commented.
Let us suppose for a moment:
An independent Scotland isn’t immediately accepted into the EU. What happens to the standards that we comply with and work to? Scottish building regs are already different, why wouldn’t a government, more likely a bureaucracy, keen to be seen as independent, introduce its own standards?
If we want to do business there would we have to manufacture to two different standards?

That, of course would cut both ways and you might think it sensible to stick to EU standards whatever the situation. But we are dealing with bureaucracy here so common sense doesn’t really come into it.
You may think it an unlikely scenario but it isn’t something that we in
England, or Wales for that matter, will have a say in. The vote to break-up the
UK is only available to one of the countries involved. Scotland can vote to leave but we can’t vote to stay in. They will shout about democracy but democracy is a very variable construct that is frequently bent to suit political aims.
And, just to be on the safe side, they are not allowing non-resident Scots to vote either!

In association with
There is no suggestion that the English economy in general will suffer if
Scotland votes to go. There is, on the other hand, much speculation about what will happen to the Scottish economy. Will it have the revenue it will need without subsidies from the English exchequer? Taxes may need to go up What will that do to companies trading north of the border? Could we get caught up in a differential rate of VAT or charge none at all? Could there be border tariffs?
Of course if Scotland is able to stay in the EU post-partum then it would simplify much. EU standards would still apply and free movement of goods would mean trade carried on as before.
This is all wild speculation, it may never happen. But the window industry has a track record of ignoring certainties when they are uncomfortable. New regulations, new laws, new standards have all been ignored until they were forced upon us. CE marking is just the most recent example. Collectively you can hardly be expected to plan for something as uncertain as Scottish independence.
All I’m saying is, just think about it.

P rime minister David
Cameron recently paid a visit to HL Plastics’ headquarters in
Derbyshire, home of the
Liniar brand.
Cameron spent the afternoon meeting workers at the state of the art factory and taking part in
PM Direct , a question and answer session with 150 of the growing workforce. No questions were off-limits for the 40 minute session, which followed a private meeting with Roger
Hartshorn and his team and a full tour of the factory, warehouse and mixing plant.
Also present were local MP Nigel Mills and councillor Stuart Bradford from the
Amber Valley district where HL is based.
During the factory tour, Hartshorn explained the PVC-U extrusion process, from tool room to dispatch, with the PM keen to find out more about the high thermally efficient properties of the
Liniar window profile and how it was made.
The PM Direct session was broadcast live on Sky News, with teams from
Channel 5 and ITN also present.
Cameron engaged the audience from the start, apologising for the secrecy surrounding his visit and saying he hoped they weren’t disappointed with the fact he wasn’t Michael Buble.
Questions covered a number of diverse topics, including pensions and the increasing retirement age, European
Union, the Scottish referendum, adult day care and social services and the sentencing of prisoners.
After the visit, Hartshorn commented:
“It’s great that the Prime Minister was able to take the time to visit our factory, and see for himself how a manufacturing business can combine innovation, commitment and great products in order to stimulate growth in the economy.
“One of the PM’s comments was about apprenticeships, and helping young people to learn a trade – and that’s something that’s close to our heart at HL Plastics, with six apprentices currently employed and many of the management team having risen through the ranks of the business – including myself.” ❐
Following the announcement by the Department of Energy and
Climate Change of the new Green Deal home improvement fund
(GDHIF), the National Insulation Association (NIA) will be promoting the scheme to consumers and signposting them to its members, as the preferred choice to carry out the insulation work.
The GDHIF will be replacing the current cashback scheme in
England and Wales and is expected to be launched in June. It will provide up to £6,000 cashback for solid wall Insulation, up to £1,000 for a combination of other measures and will be open to both
Green Deal providers and Green Deal installers.
Neil Marshall, chief executive of the NIA says:“The new GDHIF scheme provides a tremendous opportunity for both householders and the insulation industry and we will be actively promoting the scheme to consumers, and recommending that they choose NIA members to carry out the work in order to obtain additional peace of mind. NIA members are required to meet our robust membership criteria and sign up to a strict code of professional practice.
“Green Deal providers and insulation installers wishing to benefit from our promotion of the scheme and signposting of consumers to our members should contact us as soon as possible to apply for membership ready for the launch of the GDHIF in June.” ❐
014 is set to be another record year 2 for Swisspacer.
The company reports sales in the first quarter up 8% on 2013.
Swisspacer launched in the UK in
2008 and quickly grew to become the market leader in 2011. It offers the best thermal performance and is tried and tested to give long-lasting results.
Swisspacer is available in a choice of 17 colours and is ideal for triple glazing.
Swisspacer marketing and sales manager, Vic De Costa says: “We are very pleased with Swisspacer sales so far this year. They are even higher than
2013, which was itself a record year.
“Many large sealed unit makers use
Swisspacer because it does not require any additional investment and can be used on existing machinery. Fabricators and installers ask for Swisspacer because it’s the best performing warm edge spacer bar in the world and lasts for decades. It is the only warm edge spacer bar that can be substituted for any other." ❐

R omford’s Crystal Windows is one of the South-east’s largest manufacturers and installers of PVC-U windows and doors. The company has been trading since 1995, and in that time has built a strong reputation for great value and exceptional service within the M25 area.
Since changing over to Liniar systems for its profile, the team at Crystal says it has seen business soar.
Tony Morris, Crystal’s operations manager, says: “We’ve already a built a very successful business – sales have increased to £30m in the last year in spite of the recession – but since getting on board with the Liniar system at the end of 2013 we’ve seen a significant uplift in our revenue based on last year’s results, and look to be heading towards a record year,
“The Liniar system has so many benefits over other window systems – as the newest system around it’s been designed from scratch with a whole range of fabrication and installation benefits – and the finished product gives the homeowner better thermal efficiency, a wide range of colour options and a choice of matching products such as the innovative

The GGF fire resistant glazing group
(FRGG) has published the new standard for The Specification and Installation of
Fire-Resistant Barriers containing Glass for
Resistance against the passage of Fire and
Products of Combustion.
The FRGG has brought together the group’s expertise in a new standard covering the specification, supply and installation of fire-resistant barriers containing glass for protection against fire and the effects of combustion. The standard is ideal for the training of installers and glaziers in the specialities of fire-resistant glazing, to develop and maintain professional levels of competency within the glazing and construction industries.
This GGF standard for fire-resistant glass and glazing is the first of its kind. Not only does it set core criteria for installers but others will also find the standard of value in providing guidance. That includes, for example, those who engage installation contractors or who are responsible for fire safety in buildings. The standard is also a useful reference for those who are charged with overseeing the application and enforcement of regulations and fire safety legislation.

S ecure Trade Frames, a relatively new but very successful fabricator, purchased a Stuga
Ecoline stand-alone prepping center and was so impressed with it that it immediately ordered an
Autocut automatic saw center.
These two machines working together offer a good compromise to a fully automated sawing and machining center which the company couldn’t justify at this stage. Stuga agreed that when
Secure Trade Frames is ready, estimated for 2015, Stuga would take both machines back at a reasonable price in part-exchange when a new automated line is ordered. These machines are in great demand and would be refurbished again for the next client.
On the other side of Leicester
Frame Maker is a family business that has endured all the frustrations of not being able to make enough windows and not being able to find enough skilled and reliable staff to fabricate the volumes it needed and orders were being lost as it couldn’t handle any more.
Looking at automated sawing nand machining was a bit of jungle as the equipment is quite expensive and after bad experiences with previous machinery suppliers it was ultracautious. After a long period of looking at Stuga and several meetings a decision was made to purchase a new AutoFlow-2 sawing and machining center.
The
AutoFlow-2 is the smallest machine in terms of size and output that
Stuga produces but with a capacity of 400 windows per week it was big enough for the needs of the company. Frame Maker is now settling into getting used to the automation process and logistics involved and can make many more windows than previously with
12 accuracy and consistency allowing it to grow its business without growing its production staff. The
AutoFlow is also available in a ‘VS’ version for fabricators wishing to make vertical sliders in any volume.
This model automatically cuts the frame to sill angle on ‘VS’ frame and can put the mechanical fixing holes in ‘VS’ sills.
In the centre of Leicester Echo
Plastic Wood is a non-window fabricator that decided it wanted
Stuga automation for its plastic wood kits that are used to erect doors, garden furniture, fencing and much more from recycled plastic materials. Owner Sean Presson had a vision that the Stuga AutoFlow-2 sawing and machining center could be used to produce his product range in volume and Stuga’s joint owner and technical director Gareth
Green was keen to help with the development on the software front.
The rest is history.
After a development programme where the two companies have had to work together to develop special tooling, blades, cutters, speeds and feeds to deal with the various different recycled plastics Sean and his team are enjoying the benefits of automation across his range of products, meaning he is now confident to grow his business.
Stuga has a service center in
Great Yarmouth that provides total care and back-up to all owners of
Stuga machinery and the geographically based team of service technicians cover the entire
United Kingdom and Ireland on the ground.
Stuga’s machines are internet connected for intelligent fault finding and parts are resourced in this country to ensure continuity of supply.

T wo window types from Kawneer are now tested to the
European harmonised smoke vent standard, meeting the mandatory requirement under the construction product regulations that came into force in July 2013.
Kawneer’s AA541 and AA720 open-out casement windows, using SECO N 24 40 actuators from SE Controls, passed BS
EN 12101-2 to offer a fully compliant solution for specifiers, main contractors and fabricators.
Vertical options for top, side and bottom-hung open-out applications are now available with a single or twin actuator offering opening widths of up to 900mm to meet required free areas for high rise residential and non-residential applications.
Kawneer’s approved network of specialist sub-contracting installers is now able to access SE Controls’ support with estimating, design and CAD through to installation and CE certification.
This is due to SE Controls’ certified factory production control system which is verified by an accredited body notified to BS EN 12101-2.This process is required as a smoke vent is
AVCP Level 1 which is a higher level than BS EN 14351-1 which is Level 3. A declaration of performance (DoP) and certification of compliance is then produced by SE Controls to accompany the CE Mark on behalf of Kawneer’s dealer.
To meet the standard, both actuator and vent were tested together to the BS EN 12101-2 annexes at an independent certified test house and witnessed by a body notified to the standard.
The vent and actuator in the closed position were installed into the wall of a furnace and the temperature raised to 300˚C at which point the vent was automated to the fully-open position. The vent then had to stay in position for 30 minutes at 300˚C without reducing the size of the aperture produced by more than 10%.

A luK’s 72BW HI window system and SG52 curtain walling system were supplied for the curriculum buildings which form the bulk of the accommodation for the school. For the performing arts building the architects specified the SG52 and bespoke SL52 curtain walling systems.
Daniel Lewis, senior architect at AHMM says: “For the project we required a bespoke solution for the fin face caps
(145mm x 15mm top hat capping).
AluK provided us with an excellent service – the company’s proactive approach as well as technical and design expertise meant that we were able to realise our designs.”
The 72BW HI window system dimensions specified for this project were 2.6m width by 2.2m height which was achieved by using a reinforced mullion profile to comply with the site design wind loads. With the architects’ approval, a custom method of fitting a mesh grill and carrier system was developed to allow necessary ventilation levels for rooms in compliance with BB101.
This prevented the full area of clean opening being exposed when the window vents were open.
Offsite construction was critical for this project so a detail was developed to enable the windows to be attached to the pre-cast panels off site.
The windows needed to be flexible on glazing insertions so that units could be replaced when necessary without the need for machinery support structures to the external side of buildings. All side hung open-inwards gearing kits fitted to the open-in windows were created as a customised set specifically for the project’s varied window sizes. This enabled the fabrication and installation of the windows to run seamlessly throughout the projectschedule whilst achieving the necessary security.
Lower elements of the façade were set to incorporate the
12
SG52 curtain walling system, and upper cantilevered elements of the building were to be glazed using SL52 capped system. AluK worked closely with the architects and the fabricator to establish exactly what design and detailing requirements were needed to ensure performance and aesthetic were attained. This included the design of a finned feature cap that was created to travel the height and width of building screens. Loadings (wind uplift, live loads, snow) and associated fixings to system components were investigated and built into the design from an early stage. Rapid prototypes were created in order to agree on a suitable cap projection and clip mechanism prior to material production. Collaboration on the design of this feature cap allowed the architects to see how the intersection between horizontal and vertical elements would look.
The usage of the performing arts building needed to be taken into consideration at the design stage of the curtain wall screening. Internal partition walls within the building were constructed to possess an acoustic rating of 60dB to prevent noise transmission from neighbouring studios and rooms.
Burntwood school required that noise was not to be allowed to pass via the curtain wall profiles
(flanking transmission). A design solution was found whereby the mullions were filled with a dense acoustic material and overclad to essentially form part of the internal wall, and the glass unit edges were treated to mask partition sightlines.
Over the past few years, AHMM and Lend Lease have been reinventing the entire educational campus with a series of built interventions and outdoor spaces that respect the modernist principles of the original 1950s buildings designed by Sir
Leslie Martin. The overall project is due for completion in summer 2014.

S mart Architectural Aluminium has launched a new range of finishes to complement its already extensive range of colour options. In addition to the company’s Naturals range of standard finishes and its bespoke Sensations options, customers can now select eight anodised colour matches from the new Alchemy range which combines the style and aesthetics of anodising, with the advantages of a high quality powder coating process.
Created as a perfect match to the traditional anodising process, the Alchemy range includes shades of gold, bronze, silver, grey and black and whereas the anodising process is notoriously difficult to precisely control colour, the use of powder coating technology assures consistent and precise colour matches time after time.
Commenting on the Alchemy launch, Smart’s managing director, Eddie Robinson says: “This range is another great addition to our product offer. Not only does Alchemy provide customers with a very cost-effective and highly durable alternative to traditional anodised profiles, but it also enables us to offer colour-matched accessories for anodised finishes.

J ack Aluminium Systems’ new TD68 pivot anti-panic door has achieved the stringent PAS 24 security standard.
The new PAS 24 pivot anti-panic door has been designed by
Jack Aluminium and is based on its successful thermally efficient Jack Door TD68. The new door features a rebated low threshold and lock strike plate. The rebate prevents tampering with the internal panic device from a wire under or over the door leaf. Strike plate supports the lock during an attack.
The commercial aluminium escape door incorporates the
Adams Rite Sentinel M three point anti-panic lock with three star security cylinder. It enables the door to be locked internally to ensure it is secure on the outside, but can still be opened in an emergency from the inside using a standard panic door exit device. This makes it the ideal emergency exit door for schools, hospitals, hotels, offices or any building where external doors are vulnerable to forced entry.
Achieving PAS 24 and certification means that fabricators can now achieve the requirements set out by Secured by
Design with the TD68 pivot anti-panic doorset from Jack
Aluminium.
Jeff Pearson, sales director at Jack Aluminium says:
“Emergency access, escape and panic doors are notoriously difficult to secure from the outside. By their nature they need to be quick to release but this can make them vulnerable to attack. We developed the aluminium TD68 pivot anti-panic door to provide a safe, highly secure and cost effective solution.” ❐ www.jackaluminium.co.uk

is
A fter all the hype about coming out of recession, the current mood seems to be that while the forward order situation looks increasingly positive, ‘it does not feel like it’. The
CBI claimed in late
May that output is currently the best since 2003 and we are regular receiving positive updates from the
UK housebuilders.
In addition the
CAB quarterly state of the market surveys continue to highlight increased confidence in forward investment especially in plant and machinery and e-business so one could be mistaken for believing that the
UK Construction sector was heading for substantial growth.
Indeed the latest Construction Trade Survey published by the Construction Products Association showed that construction activity rose in Q1, the first time in six years that the sector has enjoyed four consecutive quarters of growth in activity. However as CAB members have reported, higher labour costs and a lack of available skills are a ticking time bomb that needs to be defused to keep the additional business sustainable.
Against this general background and with companies still keeping a tight rein on costs and general expenditure it is especially pleasing for CAB to welcome seven new members on board. Ayton McKeown, Dales Fabrications, dani Alu UK, Clearway Doors and Windows, RAICO
UK, Joedan Manufacturing and Winkhaus UK have all joined and already taken an active role in the association’s work. In CAB’s 20th anniversary year we are more determined than ever to highlight our technical, marketing and campaigning activities.
In recent weeks our work has been as varied as ever. We have not only managed a successful national technical conference with leading architects, main contractors
(Balfour Beatty) and consultants discussing BIM and part
L/Zero Carbon , lobbied MP’s including the deputy prime minister on late payment issues and the Construction
Supply Chain Payment Charter and addressed over 1500 young people on the sustainability of the aluminium in building sector. This perhaps highlights that there has never been a better time to become involved in your trade association.
❐
o run manufacturing, any T fabrication or installation operation in our sector, you need to make a significant investment in the relevant
British and European standards. New and revised standards are being published continuously, and the investment is needed to interpret each standard and to implement it in your organisation by putting the relevant manufacturing, testing and control procedures in place.
Perhaps a customer has specified a product to a particular standard or you simply need it to fulfil a legal requirement such as CE marking. But how many standards are now languishing on your shelves gathering dust? You studied it in detail initially and it was a constant reference source in those first few weeks, but now you are fairly sure you know the detail without even looking.
So let’s take the standard EN 14351-1, for example. A very familiar standard in our sector that covers all windows and doors, right? What about automatic doors, or fire doors, or internal doors? Are they covered by EN 14351-
1? They are all doors, after all…
That is where the scope of the standard comes in; section
1 of every European ‘EN’ and British ‘BS’ standard sets out its scope. This tells you what product types are included and, which can be often just as useful, what types are not included. While these lists are not comprehensive they can provide invaluable guidance to ensure you use the right standards for your product.
The foreword to a standard can also set out the relationship between the various standards in the family, sometimes in the form of a diagram, which can also help point you in the right direction. The diagram in the foreword to EN 14351-1 shows how it relates to prEN
16034, which includes fire doors in its scope and EN
14351-2, which includes internal doors in its scope.
If you are a member of CAB, you can always ask us for advice about the scope of a standard and which other standards might be applicable to your product range. We hold some 300 standards in our library and the list keeps growing. We can also help you keep on top of which version of the standard is the latest to ensure you are using up to date information. Another benefit of joining CAB in
2014.

For the first time, Adams Rite, part of Assa Abloy Security
Solutions, has successfully tested its commercial multipoint lock range within an aluminium doorset to the PAS24 standard.
Working together with Kaye
Building Systems, Sentinel M was integrated within the thermal doorset, offering three points of trusted locking, whilst still allowing for quick and easy egress due to it orbital latch design.
The rigorous testing process, which took place in the Assa
Abloy UKAS accredited test lab, provided the benchmarks to show the doorset offers enhanced security, and therefore has the capability to withstand sustained usage within a variety of environments, including education, commercial and retail.
After timed manual attacking methods, hard and soft body impact tests, and static load testing up to
4500N the doorset was successfully tested to PAS24.
Derek Hodgson, general manager at Kaye Building Systems, says:“We have manufactured this doorset in line with the changes to Part L, due to come into force in April. This particular doorset is proven to have a low rate of heat loss through the material, ensuring the door is energy efficient, in keeping with the building regulations relating to the conservation of fuel and power.” ❐ www.adamsrite.co.uk

A s demand for aluminium rises, Gloucestershire-based fabricator Customade has announced record volumes of its Classic-al window system.
“Aluminium is a hugely popular material now within the domestic market and Classic-al has been our fastest growing window system by far,” says Andy Thomas
Customade’s sales and marketing director. “We are currently fabricating in excess of 300 aluminium windows a week and have the infrastructure in place to increase capacity as demand for aluminium grows even more in the future.”
“We are very pleased with the success of this window system, which is totally exclusive to us. It’s the choice for people who want a window with no compromises at all on looks, security or performance. Our installers have welcomed Classic-al, not just because it’s a modern and energy efficient alternative to PVC-U and timber, but also because it has helped them to diversify from the fiercely competitive PVC-U market with fresh sales opportunities.”
The Classic-al window combines the traditional appeal of a timber window with the trusted performance of aluminium. With its elegant, slim sightlines and a soft, sculptured profile, Classic-al has been designed with reliability and aesthetics in mind. It uses a proven polyamide thermally broken 70mm system, which is based on the Smart Alitherm 47 aluminium window, and benefits from the strength and durability of aluminium.
Classic-al comes in a choice of more than 300 colours, in a matt, satin or gloss finish as well as a dual colour option. It is fitted with a shootbolt locking system, which is bolstered by specially designed shootbolt keeps for greater security. Classic-al’s proven window handles are ergonomically designed and push button operated with an additional keyed deadlock.
The window is available in A, B and C energy rated options and is fully Kitemark tested. For added peace of mind, it has also been awarded full Secured by Design and
PAS 23/24 approval.

Gloucester based specialist aluminium fabricator CDW Systems is experiencing strong demand for its range of sliding folding doors.
CDW Systems’ managing director
Jerry Webb reckons the company is benefitting from the increasing popularity of the product in the domestic sector as well as an upturn in the economy and the continued popularity of aluminium in the commercial sector.
He says:“If we look at the domestic sector in particular, the number of homeowners replacing their patio doors with a new aluminium sliding door or bi-folding door is increasing year on year.
“Siding doors and bi-folds were a niche product in the domestic sector but this is changing and many of our customers are capitalising on this opportunity.”
CDW Systems manufacture and supply the ALUK, SAPA and Smarts sliding doors.Together with these suppliers CDW Systems have made modifications to the products, resulting in significantly fewer site call-outs and a smoother installation process for installers.
CDW Systems recently polled 5657 aluminium installers in the UK for an exclusive report into the aluminium sector.
The results revealed optimism going forward and gave an insight into what installers are looking for in aluminium suppliers.

Eight finalists of the FIT Show Master Fitter
Challenge, organised in association with
FENSA, have been chosen. Following a long and testing process undertaken by the assessors of GQA Qualifications, eight fitting teams have been selected from dozens of hopefuls to take part in the live finals on the first two days of the show.
Competing on a specially constructed pavilion, four finalists each day will each be expected replace a bay window, install a residential composite door and faultfind a further resi-door under the strict scrutiny of a panel of GQA judges.
Finalists will be marked up or down for their installation skills of course but also a wide range of criteria such as health and safety and customer care considerations.
The finalists include first time entrants
David Pullford and Jack Elm from Everest;
David Keats and Jonathan Mountford from DK Windows; and Steven Price from
Conwy Valley Windows and
Conservatories. Those entering for a second time in the hope of taking home some of the £10,000 prize money and the kudos of the title are: Karl Kinsey and Paul
Casbolt from Yes Glazing; Dave Eagles and colleague from Xavier Windows;
Scott Higgs and colleague from Walkers
Windows; and Craig Hanson from
Pennine Trade and Retail. Turning up the heat is last year’s winner Arron Clegg
(pictured) who, with a colleague from Eco-
Sash, will be seeking to his keep crown.
A first prize of £5,000 will be presented to the winner at the FIT Show Gala
Dinner, which is taking place at the
International Centre, Telford on the
Wednesday night shortly after the conclusion of the finals. Further prizes of
£3,000 and £2,000 will be presented to the second and third placed finalists of the competition, which has been sponsored by Liniar, Truedor, Rapierstar and The

A Fit-up for Face of FIT photo winners
This set of dodgy-looking ‘Usual Suspects’ are actually the crew from GT Window
Products who have just got clean away with a pair of tickets to the exclusive FIT
Show Gala Dinner after winning the show’s Face of FIT photo competition.
And of course, their faces in front of thousands of their peers throughout the industry! Their Usual Suspects ‘selfie’ came out top in the competition and will be used extensively on the show’s official programme and other marketing material but many of the entries were so good that no fewer than four others will also win two tickets each as joint runnersup. Social networks have been buzzing with all kinds of comical, quizzical and spoof photos since organisers launched the competition, aimed at getting visitors and exhibitors really involved in the show. Tony
Hancock, General Manager of
GT Window Products, the
Tewkesbury-based hardware manufacturer and second-time
FIT Show exhibitor, said, “We won the competition at the first
FIT Show, we have won again now and we will definitely be going for the hat-trick next time...unless anyone thinks they are good enough to stop us.” And now, as well as GT Windows’ movie-inspired rogues’ gallery, prizes also go to longestablished sash window trade fabricator
Roseview Windows; installer Andy
Howarth and wife Lisa who are ADH
Glazing of Reed, near Burnley;
Dungannon Window Co of Co Tyrone, also a long-established sash fabricator and a FIT Show exhibitor; and St Helen’sbased profile bender Arcoframe, which will also be exhibiting.

Quickslide in pole position
Quickslide is getting quicker than ever at the FIT Show where visitors can test their skills as a Formula 1 driver and even win daily prizes with its F1 racing simulator competition. Quickslide’s team of experts will be on hand to advise on any of the company’s products such as PVC-U sliding sash windows and aluminium bi-fold doors. Of course, Quickslide customers don’t need a trade show to get to any of its top people – the company prides itself in making its experts accessible to everyone – but they will be out in force at FIT, including chairman Adrian Barraclough, business development director Ben
Weber, operations director Michael
Connor and sales & marketing director
Tom Swallow, all ready to advise on anything from product spec and online ordering to the company’s range of marketing materials and customers’ personalised websites.

Ritec’s new ClearShield Eco-System
Ritec International, pioneers of durable
‘non-stick’ surface technologies, will launch the new ClearShield Eco-System which is claimed to transform new or old glass into a higher value product with lowmaintenance performance. ClearShield
helps maintain an original ‘A’ Window
Energy Rating, allowing glass to uphold its optical clarity over the life of a window.
Customers do not have to stock a new type of glass; Ritec's simple package enables unprotected glass to be upgraded into ClearShield Eco-Glass in the factory.
The system also offers companies the ability to renovate, protect and maintain existing glass on-site, giving them opportunities to add new revenue streams. See more at stand 205.

Illbruck launches the ‘Have One On Us!’
Illbruck has launched its campaign to make sure that all ‘A’ and ‘A+’ rated windows are installed with a system that keeps the heat in and energy costs down.
The ‘Have One On Us’ campaign allows an installer to fit-out an entire house free of charge with illbruck’s
A-Rated window system containing
TP651 trio impregnated expending tape and
FM330 foam. This special offer is available to the first 50 installers registering on illbruck’s stand at the show. The firm claims that any window fitting using the system is then thermally insulated, airtight, and has improved acoustic properties too delivering what customers thought they were getting when they purchased ‘A’ rated windows. J ust a few years ago, the thought of replacing a domestic conservatory – or even just the roof – was almost unheard of. After all, what reason would the homeowner have when the newer ones looked and performed pretty much the same? Not only had styles and designs hardly evolved in the few decades since the early installations but the new buzz-words of energy efficiency sweeping through the window industry were bypassing the conservatory sector completely. Mark Schlotel of Synseal says: “All that has changed and Synseal is emerging as a driver of that change, tackling both of those sources of inertia with a range of new design options and also a different way of thinking about energy conservation in the conservatory itself.”The proof is in the figures, claims Schlotel, quoting findings by Palmer
Market Research:
“While overall the conservatory market trend has shown a steady decline over recent years, replacements have grown to more than
16% of that total –
13,200 out of the
81,600 total installations in 2012
– and that is excluding more than
10,000 additional replacement roofs.
“Conservatory replacement is becoming a very vibrant sector in itself and the potential is almost doubled by the inclusion of roof replacements. This is an area that we at Synseal are taking very seriously and one in which we are already doing a great deal to support our installers.”
Schlotel says: “All the historic figures show that more and more conservatories in the UK are reaching a natural renewal age – nearly 800,000 were installed during the six years before the millennium and a further 750,000 are at least ten years old – and at the same time, the reasons for renewal are growing stronger all the time. The biggest contributor to householders seeing their conservatory as dated is the polycarbonate roof. There are around
900,000 of them at least but virtually all older conservatories throw away heat to an extent that would not be acceptable nowadays.
In the past, many homeowners saw this as no problem and simply didn’t use them in the colder months but attitudes are changing as people now expect a full four seasons of use.”
While the trend for more and more energy efficient
26 windows continues apace, this movement had seemed to pass conservatories by completely. Synseal has now tackled the problem head-on with a new study The
Synseal Thermal Calculations Report which shows just how much money could be saved simply by upgrading the glazing materials in an existing unit. The headline result was that, for an ‘average’ conservatory 4m x 4m, opened up to seamlessly link to the main house, more than £140 a year could be cut from household energy bills. This was calculated by upgrading to new Legend triple-glazed multi-chambered PVC-U windows, with argon-filled DG units made with two low-e panes of glass and one of float,
Superspacer space bars and a Global PVC-U and aluminium conservatory roof glazed with Celsius Elite high performance double glass with a centre pane U-value of 0.9W/(m 2 K).
Schlotel says: “We were able to show for the first time the relevance of thermal efficiency to conservatories
(opened up to seamlessly link to the main house) and so give our installers a powerful new selling tool not only for upgrading but also for replacing conservatories or roofs, and even with a knock-on effect for selling new installations.”
Not only can Synseal supply higher energy efficient solutions, the firm has embarked on a second thrust to invigorate the replacement market with new products such as the Global Summer and K2 Capella hybrid orangery systems, which can give a distinctly new look to a replacement roof or even a whole conservatory. The
Global Summer has already brought the orangery concept within reach of many more homeowners by giving this building extension style but at a more affordable price.
Now that same look is also creating a greater visual differentiation to give the consumer another tangible reason for choosing to upgrade their old conservatory.
Schlotel says: “Of course, a lot of these older conservatories and their ageing polycarbonate glazed roofs will stay put but we believe that now is the time for installers to dust off those customer databases – which we sincerely hope they have kept – and start making some courtesy calls.” ❐ www.synseal.co.uk

O ur House is a Building For The Future (BFTF) project offering facilities and community support to disabled children and their families. It recently gained royal approval when Prince Edward and Sophie visited the centre (pictured). As BFTF chairman Mark Ashwell has been intrinsically involved with the project for over five years and, as managing director of TradeMark
Windows, he was able to extend his support. Upon hearing about the Our House development TradeMark’s main supplier, Conservatory Outlet, supplied the frames free of charge and has in fact since supported TradeMark on a second charitable project, again with a Royal connection, at an equine assisted learning centre which was opened on Wednesday 14th May by Zara Tindall. This
centre will see disadvantaged young people develop skills and self-confidence through working with horses.
PVC-U, timber and aluminium installer The County
Group has embarked on the next stage of its growth strategy and joined the Conservatory Outlet network of dealers. Kent and Sussex based County carries out a range of home improvements including extensions and all forms of building work, kitchens and bathrooms and primarily windows, doors, conservatories and orangeries.
MD Mike Evans explains some of the reasons he chose to work with Conservatory Outlet: “We’ve sought a supplier that can provide sales and marketing support to actively help us grow the business. Following initial discussions it was clear Conservatory Outlet could offer us a wide range of quality products and a powerful tried and tested sales and marketing package – so joining the network was a no-brainer.” ❐ www.conservatoryoutletdealers.co.uk
Following successful trial installations in both hot and cold climates, Synseal has launched a premium quality aluminium conservatory roof for UK market applications.
Global Plus, is a new design which optionally features aluminium componentry for all external roofing parts with the exception of guttering and associated downpipes, which employ a PVC system.
For export project applications, a bespoke aluminium guttering system is always supplied to satisfy premium continental market demand for a roof completely manufactured in aluminium.
New aluminium finial and cresting designs add a distinctive character to the Global Plus offering, which now stands alongside the K2 aluminium roof to provide a choice of precision-engineered aluminium conservatory roof solutions.
Global Plus aluminium external components include rafter and ridge top caps and end caps, radius ends and muntin bars. It is available from stock in white, brown and caramel polyester powder finishes as well as mill finish, for coating in a RAL colour according to specification. As with Global roof, Global Plus rafter top cappings can also be supplied in one of Synseal’s popular woodgrain foil finishes.
Mark Schlotel, Synseal’s head of marketing, says:“Britain’s best-selling conservatory roof has just got better with the addition of this new premium quality design option. Thousands of UK professional installers choose Global because it is well-designed and easy to fit and, building on the popularity of our
Global Summer hybrid orangery, this new Global Plus aluminium roof provides a further opportunity to up-sell and enhance margins, whilst delivering a top quality and highly robust product for homeowners.” ❐ www.synseal.co.uk

A new Synseal showroom located at the company’s
Huthwaite headquarters is now officially open for customers to view.
Synseal’s marketing and technical services teams have joined forces to create orangery central , located in the heart of the Midlands. Five different orangery design solutions are displayed – a Venetian widespan orangery with fullheight window walling and popular Evolve PVC-U bifolding doors in cream woodgrain foil finish; a traditional brick-built parapet wall Integra orangery with countrystyle rustic detailing and Evolve vertical sliding sash windows; a flat-roofed Rio orangery with Synerjy windows; a contemporary-styled double-soffit Modena orangery in anthracite grey finish and the best-selling
Global Summer hybrid orangery with Legend windows and doors.
Customers can come along and literally feel the difference by touching a Celsius performance glass demonstration wall that clearly shows how the specialist
Celsius Clear, Celsius One and Celsius Elite glasses reduce thermal transference and heat loss through the sealed double glass units when compared to standard glass.
The newly refurbished showroom was specially prepared in readiness to stage an orangery workshop on behalf of the Conservatory Outlet Dealer Network, which was attended by 19 dealer companies and jointly hosted by Greg Kane, managing director of Conservatory Outlet.
Mark Schlotel, head of marketing at Synseal, says: “Our new showroom focusses on the value-adding and aspirational products that are now driving growth in our
UK market, such as orangeries, bi-folding doors and high performance glass. We’re also keen to demonstrate how our range of structural orangery designs can be fitted with
Global or K2 lantern roofs, so the new Integra and Rio orangery exhibits feature an adjoining raised stairway to help visitors directly compare our two proven conservatory roof solutions up close and personal.” ❐ www.synseal.co.uk
Ultraframe has developed a new sales training course which it believes will power the industry on into the next phase of growth by meeting the needs of the modern consumer. The training package, which has been developed in partnership with Paul Clifton, is being delivered by newly appointed training manager Andy Lewis (pictured).
Commerical director Joe Martoccia explains why investment in training will have a significant impact on the sales performance of its network partners:
“We’re not suggesting that our retailers don’t know how to sell, far from it, what we are trying to deliver is a new way of selling the new evolved products today’s conservatory and glazed extension buyers really want; in fact the training package has been developed with input from a number of our retailers.
“It’s simple, at the very core of our new product development strategy is the desire to meet the needs and wants of the modern homeowner who aspires to better thermal performance, usability and cutting edge design. These factors are often overlooked in the conventional sales process and consequently so too are the many solutions we have in our continually evolving product range, which often could help meet the homeowner’s demands, close the sale and drive higher sales values.
Andy Lewis says:“We have trialled this training course amongst a select number of customers. The
feedback has been tremendous and has helped us fine tune the package which includes some really novel message delivery and sales tools, available digitally or in hard copy. I have been impressed with the core selling skills I have come across in the industry so far. I see our role to enhance these skills and provide a fresh approach to pitch new and higher value products.” ❐ www.ultraframe.co.uk

(BIM) components through BIMstore to make specification of its façade, window and door products even easier for architects, engineers and contractors.
BIM enables architects, consultants, contractors, facilities and project managers to have access to comprehensive information about a building’s components and over the complete life cycle of a project – from its design, construction, operation and maintenance through to dismantling and recycling.
The Government aims to reduce the cost of construction work by up to 20% by the end of the current parliament and ministers have committed to increase innovation, improve skills, and reduce costs and carbon emissions. In a bid to meet these targets, a deadline of
2016 has been set for the implementation of BIM across public sector construction.
The range of Technal’s façade, window and door systems is now available on
BIMstore’s website, allowing specifiers to search and download the glazing components for free, to use in their own BIM modelling.
Jon Palethorpe, director for Technal,
30 echnal, has launched a range of building information modelling says, “BIM has the potential to radically change the face of the construction industry, helping to increase efficiency and reduce time.
“As a business, we are committed to working in partnership with architects and contractors, and we are keen to be at the forefront of the use of BIM. By making our glazing systems readily available on the BIM database, we are providing the industry with a wealth of product information for use at the earliest stage in the building design process.”
The Technal BIM components are fully compatible with Autodesk Revit 2013 and later editions, and are now available to download for the following façade systems:
GEODE-MX curtain walling – Visible
Grid, Trame Horizontale and Verticale, acoustic, sloped and structural mechanical glazing, and MX62 for larger spans
New SOLEAL and CD commercial door systems
MODAL low rise glazing
FXi65 casement window suite.

Following feedback from the market, products include flat packers, flexi corners, frame packers, drain hole and screw cap covers and even glazing shovels. All packs are designed for a trade counter. Products are delivered in bulk and sub packed into quantities ideal for the professional installer. The sub packs have point of sale header cards which can be dual branded with own branding for your trade counter also available. The range even includes promotional boxes of volume mixed flat packers for the trade to offer better value to the professional installer.
For installers there are new product packages and ways to find a local stockist. As well as the Glazpart corner wedges which are regarded as

T he 3000 series of fully-controlled concealed door closers from Astra
Door Controls now features a new slimline face plate to make it easier and quicker to fit, and even more discrete and attractive in situ.
The 3000 series concealed closers offer all the adjustability and control of an overhead closer, with the aesthetic appeal of a concealed device. They are often specified when clean, minimal design is required without compromising on performance – even on half-hour and one hour fire doors.
The closer’s face plate has been reduced in width to 32mm. which means it looks less obtrusive. It is also easier to fit as less timber needs to be removed to fit the closer into the door edge.
The 3000 series of concealed door closers from Astra is manufactured in the UK, in four different power sizes with adjustable closing speed and latching action for different sizes and weights of doors. A hydraulic piston assembly, designed by Astra, offers an adjustable, controlled rate of door closure together with an adjustable snap-action for overcoming the latch.
The closer’s design and build makes it suitable for high traffic applications, both commercial and residential. The Astra
3000 series is fully controlled and adjustable, making it a viable alternative to overhead products at a sensible price. This adjustability helps specifiers to achieve doors which comply with the
Equality Act 2010, Building Regs and PAS
24 for entrance doors and the RRO for fire doors.

SFS intec has expanded its portfolio of window bracket systems with the
JB-D Light, developed to totally eliminate dangerous installations within the masonry’s
60mm ‘danger zone’.
It is a reoccurring issue that window installers continue to overlook the position of fasteners when installing windows back to masonry. If fastened within
60mm of the window opening edge, the substrate is instantly placed under significant strain, as the fastener’s minimum safe working edge distance is unachievable. This makes the substrate vulnerable to failure or collapse, with expensive consequences. The new JB-D Light has been specifically designed to avoid fixing within the ‘danger zone’ by fastening deep into the masonry, at least
60mm from the outside edge of the wall, to provide a secure and permanent fix.
Jamie Lewis, business development manager at SFS intec, says:
“The long term effects of poor installation of window bracket systems can be very costly and cause significant damage to the home. Our new system for masonry substrates will give homeowners and specifiers the security and high performance they need, to protect homes and investments throughout the lifecycle of the building.” ❐
S olidor has launched what it believes is the glazing industry’s first augmented reality (AR) app to present three different corporate videos from a mobile phone or tablet and believes it could be the demise of the QR code.
Augmented reality is about hidden content, usually behind a marker on a page or on film. A downloaded software app needs to be installed on a device such as a mobile phone or tablet and used in a steady position to identify and analyse a marker in a near identical way that we recognise QR codes.
Solidor has launched its new AR app to give customers additional interactive material, when they simply point their phone or tablet at an augmented reality
(AR) trigger photo or logo from the
Solidor brochure, or any other printed material with Solidor branding.
For Solidor AR, Apple users can download the app in the app Store while those with Android operating systems can find theirs through
Google Play.
Taking the latest advert, users simply open up the app and point it at one of the three different trigger photos or Solidor logo to open up three different videos, to experience some incredibly rich video content which is also available on the company’s new Solidor
TV channel.
To experience Solidor AR for yourself, download the app from the
App Store or Google Play and use with one of the latest adverts or the newly revised consumer brochure.

S aint-Gobain Glass has launched
SGGViewclear which, it claims, offers strong anti-condensation protection and best in class WERS performance.
The coating is designed to keep the external glass pane temperature above the dew point, helping to prevent condensation from forming. The result is a high-performance glazing solution that maintains excellent visibility through the window by significantly reducing the number of days affected by condensation.
Craig Dodsworth, head of marketing at Saint-Gobain Glass says: “As legislation has evolved, the demands on thermal performance of windows continues to increase. This, combined with innovations such as triple glazing, present the industry with a challenge – how to deliver windows with exceptional thermal performance without compromising the view – impacted by the build of condensation on the exterior pane of glass.
Consumers are often frustrated by the lack of visibility which can occur during the spring and autumn months. Now with SGGViewclear, there is a solution.
SGGViewclear is positioned on the external surface of an insulating glass unit, either double or triple, where it can be combined with a highperformance SGGPlanitherm Low-E coating to achieve high thermal performance.
