Summary
Students work with community organizations to develop a training
that teaches tools that will help youth maintain healthy relationships
and recognizing the signs of unhealthy ones. They will then work
their school to identify groups of students who would benefit from
this training.
Students work with partners both within and outside the school to
create a Stress Relief Resource Fair. This goal of this event is to
connect students to different ways to manage their stress. Some
resources you might include are a healthy snack station, creative
outlets (drawing, dance, music), yoga and other forms of exercise,
and a table where students can meet and get to know school
counselors.
Students organize a forum for youth and security guards and/or
police to talk about safety issues in or around school and develop
action steps.
Police and Youth Relationships
Police/Youth Sports League
Students partner with local police department to organize weekly
sports games. This will help build relationships between youth and
police and create more trust in the community.
Guns
Gun Buy Back Event
Students work with aldermen as well as gun violence prevention
advocacy groups to organize a gun buy back day. Students create a
social media campaign to raise awareness of their project.
Poverty
Peace Murals
Students work with aldermen and community members to identify
unused or neglected community space in which to display their mural.
They then work to collect submissions of images that represent
peace, select one and organize a team of student artists to complete
the mural.
Poverty
Job Readiness Trainings
Students survey their peers to see what types of jobs and job training
have the most interest. They then reach out to job training
organizations or professionals to come provide workshops and
resources for students in their school.
Gangs
Safety Map
Students survey student body about safe and unsafe locations in
school or neighborhood. They compile the results, identify trends and
potential solutions, and present to key stakeholders including school
administration, local police and school safety workers.
Gangs
Community Peace Gardens
Students take back an empty or neglected community space by
creating a community garden. A community meeting can be held to
determine the location and management of the garden year round.
Gangs
Peace March or Rally
Students work with school and community stakeholders to organize
a Peace March or Rally in their neighborhood.
